Why are boy names so hard?! :(

Currently pregnant with #2 and unsure of the gender as of yet. We have a girls name chosen and have had for a while, but are struggling with finding boys names we like. We like the more 'unusual' boho / nature themed names. This is the current list of names I like, but not love yet, so you get an idea.

Bear
Elijah (I like this but potentially too 'common')
Tate
Hendrix
Fox
Oren
Lennox
Wolf

Geez now I understand why I never see any fun names on this forum. If you have the audacity to have a top three that doesn't consist of Olivia, Charlotte, Ava, Jack, Oliver or James you must be a monster.

Bubblehorizon · 28/09/2023 22:03

🙄 there’s a lot of names between the names you listed and the likes of Fox and Wolf. You can have interesting names without them being ridiculous.

YAY! My reaction when I see another person interested in unusual/modern names hehe (Nothing against the classics at all, but I also like your style)

I didn't mean to but some of them just first/middle paired up so I'm rolling with it :)

Bellamy Tate

Perry Hendrix

Jay Sawyer

Hawthorne James nn Huck/Hawk

Asa Lennox

Blaise Oren nn Bo

Hale Fox

Sterling Wolf

Wynn Hunter

Flint Roman

Kit Wilder

Pax Ryan

Tycho Rhys

Elijah Severin

Troy Gideon

Jesus. These all sound like descriptors, not names. Pity the poor kid who has to live with one of these.

Our little boy is Huxley, Hux for short 🤗

SneezyEvie · 29/09/2023 07:44

I like Fox and Wolf.

Mammyloveswine · 29/09/2023 07:50

Elijah is hardly common!! It's more traditional but I'm a teacher abs have never taught one!

I do have an Elijah though who gets Eli...Eli's are a lot more common! (Not short for Elijah!).

JFabschair84 · 29/09/2023 08:25

My son is called Forrest and I've only had people made that 'joke' twice, both adults age 50+. It's a real shame if your first thought is to mock someone that is bad at sports and I hope if you have kids they haven't picked up your bullying tendancies.

I vaguely remember Jasper biscuits..or did i dream that!

Edited

Why should a name be fun, particularly?

It's all well and good if you're naming a pet, but not a kid.

The PP didn't say that she would say it, just that it's an obvious dopey remark that people might say.

I'm a sucker for earthy/boho/natural names too OP.

Some of these will have been listed already I'm sure but I quite like:

Heath
Chase
Woody
Oakley
Rocco
Jesse
River
Ace

Good luck xx

My sister in law wanted to name their (potential) son, Buddy.

Luckily, my brother is normal and doesn't go through life as though he lives in a Disney cartoon.

JemOfAWoman · 29/09/2023 08:44

Really wanted Arlo or Kit for my recent grandson but they settled on Magnus! As an absolute bruiser it suits him! ❤️

EyesOnThePies · 29/09/2023 08:48

Don’t know where you live but Bodhi is set to be the new Alfie here

JFabschair84 · 29/09/2023 10:14

They said being bad at sports meant you'd get mocked...to me that is a bullying mentality.

LuckySantangelo35 · 29/09/2023 11:44

@KayEmAy

“Hawthorne James nn Huck/Hawk”

no one would nickname the boy/man with that name those nicknames

LuckySantangelo35 · 29/09/2023 11:46

So many of these names are sooooo try hard to be stand out and different

0Oo · 29/09/2023 11:48

I went for names that sounded good with our surname. So that all their names all stood well on their own, but also flowed well with their middle and surname. The syllables has to ping in the right place paying attention to the consonants and vowel placement. It worked out

BertieBotts · 29/09/2023 12:05

JennyBee23 · 28/09/2023 18:44

Do people seriously call their kids Forrest? Could you imagine being rubbish at sport and all your class mocking you with "run Forrest, run".

How many 11 year olds have watched Forrest Gump? That's a film from our generation, not theirs.

As you can see from some of the "lists of classmates" the "weird" names are becoming so common now that they just won't be seen as weird names to today's kids.

hotcandle · 27/09/2023 16:00

Can I just gently suggest you choose a name that wouldn't be a burden for them?

I personally think its unfair and cruel to call a child fox, wolf or bear. Cute when they're younger of course but not as an adult man.

I have a workman on my house right now called Bear. My name unusual, I’ve only ever heard of one or two others with my name…it’s never been a burden and actually I prefer it. I would hate to be called Sarah or Jane like every other girl in my class. Many people don’t want their child or themselves to just blend in with the majority, just because that’s not you doesn’t mean it’s cruel.

BambinoBlue · 27/09/2023 16:11

I've registered lots of baby Bears. And a whole gaggle of Teddys.

No Elijah though yet.

Also, I've personally registered three Mavericks in the last year 😁 And a Hendrix. And a Rebel. It's become quite a thing to pick names like that.

Nooooo, maverick is our top boys name. 🙈 this has gutted me!!

Same. I can’t stand the old Sarah, Jane, Andrew, Benjamin. How boring.
and it’s hilarious, that actually I would never normally say that, I would never comment on a thread if someone saying help me choose between Andrew and Benjamin and say those names are ridiculous…even though I literally roll my eyes when any baby is named after the top 10 names.
but when it’s bear and fox…it’s fair game it feels like for people to ridicule. It’s so unnecessary.

Ffion21 · 28/09/2023 08:03

What seems cute will be a source of torment when children get to school. Yes you can teach them resilience but why put them in the firing line for bullying? It’s hard enough for children to navigate school, starting in day 1 named as an animal is the quickest way to have it ripped out of them.

Don’t name a child Fox, it’s just really cruel.

elijah bear is a cutesy name for a baby when you’re doing baby talk but can you imagine a 40 year old man introducing himself as that?

Perhaps your children are like that…my son saw a child named Tiger on his school class list and said wow mum, look tiger. I’m making friends with him.
just because you think your children would behave appallingly doesn’t actually mean that would happen when the majority of us teach our kids differently.
i was never teased because of my name 🤔
