Why are boy names so hard?! :(

Currently pregnant with #2 and unsure of the gender as of yet. We have a girls name chosen and have had for a while, but are struggling with finding boys names we like. We like the more 'unusual' boho / nature themed names. This is the current list of names I like, but not love yet, so you get an idea.

Bear
Elijah (I like this but potentially too 'common')
Tate
Hendrix
Fox
Oren
Lennox
Wolf

Bear - I just don't think I'd want to be a man called Bear. Yes Bear Grylls pulls it off but would your average man. Maybe as a middle name or just as a nickname e.g. Noah Bear is affectionately know as Bear in the family?

Elijah - I like it and the potential for Eli as a nn. I only know 2 (one is 7 the other under 1)

Tate - not a fan

Hendrix - there is a Hendrix in my dds swimming class and he is a pain in the arsenal, as is his mother who thinks his antics are adorable despite disrupting every other child's lesson repeatedly. So I associate it with entitled boys and their over indulgent mothers. Love Hendrik however

Fox - same feelings as Bear but not quite as bad

Oren - this is my second favourite on your list, after Elijah

Lennox - has similar vibes to Hendrix but I've only ever cone across it as a girls name

Wolf - see Bear, slightly better than Bear but worse than Fox

A few suggestions:

Quinn
Brody
Osian
Rowan
Sage
Asher

Having an unusual name doesn't make you more creative or individual.

Elijah is nice, though.

I wouldn't put Hendrix with James, just because of Jimi Hendrix, it seems funny to me.

How about Asher? That has the same Biblical feel and softness as Elijah but also reminiscent of ash trees, so it has that hippy nature feel too.

What are some opinions on the below combinations of first and middle names?

Elijah Bear
Hendrix James

Surely "Elishah Bear"?

CurlewKate · 27/09/2023 20:19

How about Elisha Bear?

CurlewKate · 27/09/2023 20:57

You may have to have had an old fashioned education to understand my last post.

Goodornot · 27/09/2023 21:00

Boys names aren't difficult. You're looking for names that are quite frankly ludicrous and that's the problem.

Bear, Fox, Wolf....you're naming a human being why would you do that?

KayEmAy · 27/09/2023 21:18

YAY! My reaction when I see another person interested in unusual/modern names hehe (Nothing against the classics at all, but I also like your style)

I didn't mean to but some of them just first/middle paired up so I'm rolling with it :)

Bellamy Tate

Perry Hendrix

Jay Sawyer

Hawthorne James nn Huck/Hawk

Asa Lennox

Blaise Oren nn Bo

Hale Fox

Sterling Wolf

Wynn Hunter

Flint Roman

Kit Wilder

Pax Ryan

Tycho Rhys

Elijah Severin

Troy Gideon

Vesper James

@winterwinterbabyrose respectively, there is a massive difference between an unusual name and a name that would set a child up for a lifetime of not being taken seriously.

ZoChan · 27/09/2023 21:22

Super outing but my two are

Huxley (means outdoorsman)
Quinlan (means wise.... but also, son of the handsome man - guess who chose this version of Quinn 🤔 😂)

SkaneTos · 27/09/2023 21:57

Bjorn, perhaps? Means "bear" in Scandinavian languages (Björn/Bjørne).

HeyYouWithTheSadFace · 27/09/2023 23:26

Oran or Odin!

I know an Odin, I think it's very cool!

I'm a teacher and only ever taught one Elijah. He's the only one in the school.

Alopeciabop · 28/09/2023 00:55

Oban or Thornton or Thatcher

Moneypenny0105 · 28/09/2023 01:01

Nope, I know an Elijah Bear.

PToosher · 28/09/2023 01:13

Jesus Christ, what are you thinking?
Your attempt to give your child a name that will make you feel edgy and cool will burden him for life.

HowNice23 · 28/09/2023 01:41

Joseph is my absolute favourite. Simple. Easy to shorten. Don't overdo it with forest names.

Mugaloaf · 28/09/2023 04:15

Koa (if you want to break the golden rule 😂)
Orion
Cosmo
Zephyr
Ari(stotle)
Nash
Orson
Calix
Tib/berius
Zev (wolf in Hebrew)
Luan
Byron
Brock
Zeren
Zuma

wellingtonsandwaffles · 28/09/2023 04:37

I love Elijah, and Oren is lovely too. Don’t hear many of either where I live.

the others are too much pressure to put on someone character wise I believe, and also a bit too “out there”

if you like strong, short and quirky

  • Miles
  • Elis
  • Otis
  • Franklin
  • Nate (short for Nathaniel)
  • Jed (short for Josiah)
  • Gus
  • Asher / Ash
  • Wesley / Wes
  • Ivor
Annonnn · 28/09/2023 05:13

Bear and Kuma (japanese for Bear) were both on my list of names for my son, I think they're lovely names.

Other suggestions;

  • Conan (love this one)
  • Cohen
  • Tristen
  • kenji
  • Grey

For all the people complaining the kids going to be burdened with an unusual name, I was burdened with the name Rachel. Growing up I was never once the only Rachel in any class at nursery/primary/secondary school. At one point there were 4 of us, it was horrible. Always having to pay attention to the register to make sure you answered "here" to the right Rachel, having to use a nickname so teachers could distinguish between our work, then embarrassment of accidently answering when someone was asking another Rachel a question. Even now my name is so common I share it with my own sister in law, I'd have absolutely loved to be given a unique name I could actually be proud of, rather than just being one of the Rachel's.

garlictwist · 28/09/2023 05:14

You can't call a child Fox. What if he turns out to be a minger?

HMW1906 · 28/09/2023 05:46

I have an Elijah, although we call him Eli, I’ve only come across 1 or 2 other Elijahs so far and he’s nearly 3, maybe it varies based
on where you live though.

I have a Jude as well.

YellowJoggers · 28/09/2023 05:52

Wilder?

PerspiringElizabeth · 28/09/2023 06:01

Joel
Asher
Avery
Aubrey
Ant? Just thinking on a nature theme 😄

Fox just makes me think of diseases and mange and rubbish, sorry 😬

Boy names are hard because they fall so definitely into a few different categories - classic (boring), edgy (try hard), surnames etc. Girl names are hard because there’s waaaaay too many nice options.

cookiedoughdough · 28/09/2023 06:08

@winterbabyrose LOVE both Elijah Bear and Hendrix James!

Bookkeepermum · 28/09/2023 06:38

Oren is Welsh for orange. I love the Welsh name for wolf, which is "Blaidd"

maddiemookins16mum · 28/09/2023 06:46

You’re making it harder than it needs to be.
