Why are boy names so hard?! :(

Currently pregnant with #2 and unsure of the gender as of yet. We have a girls name chosen and have had for a while, but are struggling with finding boys names we like. We like the more 'unusual' boho / nature themed names. This is the current list of names I like, but not love yet, so you get an idea.

Bear
Elijah (I like this but potentially too 'common')
Tate
Hendrix
Fox
Oren
Lennox
Wolf

Anders
Brett
Dale
Fenton
Howie
Brock
Gerald
Gil
Giles
Stuart
Evangelos
Gareth
Bay
Chad
Fyfe
Neville
Pat
Bert
Warwick

All used 9 times or less, in England and Wales, in the last available statistics.

I hope you find something you love. I like Bear and Elijah.

With all due respect to those who have commented. I posted on MN to find ideas for similar names to those we already like and are thinking of, ie the list in my original post.

I did not ask for opinions, or what you personally feel about those names. Or how you feel they shouldn't be used, and even a comment on my parenting I saw in there somewhere!! I should have known better posting on MN to be honest!

Genuine thank yous to all those that have contributed to my original query. Much appreciated.

I think it’s the title of the thread that has opened the floor up to more opinions than you may otherwise have had. Naming a baby is a big decision, but don’t panic that you’re putting a whole personality on the baby based on the name. People with ”creative, individual” names are no more interesting than anyone else. A Dave or a Steve has just as much chance as making waves as a Fox or a Hendrix.

JFabschair84 · 28/09/2023 13:30

My son is Forrest which I think is uncommon/unusual but not too wacky I don't think (more common in USA I believe). It does divide opinion..people either love it or think I'm mad!

Meadowflower2023 · 28/09/2023 13:43

I'm a sucker for earthy/boho/natural names too OP.

Some of these will have been listed already I'm sure but I quite like:

Heath
Chase
Woody
Oakley
Rocco
Jesse
River
Ace

Good luck xx

I know Elijah is getting a lot of love but I absolutely hate it. It’s screams Jehovah’s Witness to me (& the Jah actually come from Jehovah). I can’t hear it and not assume the family is deeply religious. Which is fine if you are, but if your hippy dippy nature folk then Elijah is as far from that as you can get really!

Anders

Carl

Elias

Emil

Per / Peter

Canute

How do you feel about a space themed nature name rather than woodland themed nature name?

Atlas
Apollo
Aries
Cosmo
Jupiter
Neptune
Oberon
Orion

That sort of thing.

Glenn
Kester
Daryl - Means "Darling" "Beloved"

You'd inflict 'Kester' on a child??

35andThriving · 28/09/2023 14:49

I like it.

35andThriving · 28/09/2023 14:53

Is there something bad associated with the name that's passed me by? I just thought it was a rare variant of Christopher.

Creamteasandbumblebees · 28/09/2023 15:43

I love old Cornish names for boys,
Tholly
Jago (John)
Kenver
Jowen (James)
Merryn
Gryffn
Locryn
Perran

Cressie2 · 28/09/2023 15:47

Can I just gently suggest you choose a name that wouldn't be a burden for them?

I personally think its unfair and cruel to call a child fox, wolf or bear. Cute when they're younger of course but not as an adult man.

Same

MarchingOnTogether · 28/09/2023 18:01

Elijah is nice and definitely not common.
I work with children and have come.across a lot of commonly used names but Elijah isn't one of them, I don't actually think I've ever met one!
It's probably the most mainstream of all the names you've suggested but I think you may be greatful for that when he's older, unusual names cab often become burden for the person growing up with it.

sayanythingelse · 28/09/2023 18:20

Lennox and Fox were on our list too. We also had

Atticus
Travis
Forrest
Eric
Hunter
Kit
Axel

My DS ended up being called Jesse.

JennyBee23 · 28/09/2023 18:44

Do people seriously call their kids Forrest? Could you imagine being rubbish at sport and all your class mocking you with "run Forrest, run".

Popwentmybrain · 28/09/2023 19:16

Unless they are a strong confident child it could lead them to issues. I am so shy and quiet, my name is never said or spelled correctly and I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. I fix anything official so it’s correct where need be but otherwise I end up answering to anything. I feel it made me more shy as I felt uncomfortable every time it was wrong and backed into myself as a child. My more confident step nephew changed his, brought the paper work home to his mum at 12 - did all his research and had it all completed just needed signatures.

CurlewKate · 28/09/2023 19:24

My brother has stepchildren with the sort of names on this thread. They all refused to go to secondary school until they were allowed to change their names.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 28/09/2023 19:37

Call him Gary, Lee or Ian if you want to be sure that his name will be unusual in his generation.

Wally1983 · 28/09/2023 20:42

Eli
Evan
Oakley

Firstnamesurname31 · 28/09/2023 21:00

Love Elijah from your list. I also like the more unusual Hebrew derived names and on the same theme as that also love

Malachi
Reuben
Caleb
Raphael
Gabriel

Personally don’t like the nature inspired names as much but that’s personal.

Bumblebee1988 · 28/09/2023 21:20

Teddy
Wolfie
Rain
Phoenix
Juniper
Archer
Forrest
Jett
Jagger

Emmajohnson84 · 28/09/2023 21:31

my boys are Noah and Arlo 😀
