Faraday or Iris or...?

Struggling to find a girl's name I love.

I like slightly unusual but not too 'out-there' names, and also not a huge fan of girls' names ending in -a, though there are a few exceptions.

Is Faraday too out there? Any other suggestions?

Love Iris but Faraday makes me think Michael.

Have you considered Farrah (as in Fawcett) ?

massivesalads · 19/07/2023 12:51

Faraday sounds like you're trying too hard to be Yooonique that you end up naming your child something ridiculous... sorry😂

YomAsalYomBasal · 19/07/2023 12:56

The girls I know with that name spell it Farideh.

CallieQ · 19/07/2023 12:57

Faraday?! Please don't use this

A male famous scientist's surname

CallieQ · 19/07/2023 12:58

GoodVibesHere · 19/07/2023 11:56

Faraday!?? Hmm how about:

Einstein
Pasteur
Fleming
Watson
Crick

😂

MoralOrLegal · 19/07/2023 12:59

I think you're just taking the Michael there...

LilyLemonade · 19/07/2023 13:00

For me, Faraday would be too out there although it has a nice sound and rhythm to it.

I really like Farah.

What about
Fallon
Briar
Charis
Laurel
Morgan
Guinevere
Lindsay
Lois
Sigrid

Yonderway · 19/07/2023 13:03

Faraday just sounds like a surname. Sorry I don't think it's a very attractive sounding first name.
Iris is lovely though

PickledScrump · 19/07/2023 13:13

Faraday is terrible.

Iris is lovely but isn’t unusual. I know of several and all of them are rainbow babies as Iris means rainbow, so the assumption may be that yours is a rainbow baby too.

JanesBlond · 19/07/2023 13:15

If you did want a science name there’s
Maria/Marie
Dorothy
Frances
Rosalind
Irene
Donna
Ada
Vera

Yes not keen in Faraday, it will always be a cage to me!

What about Phaedra? Greek goddess of light I believe? However, iris is lovley too, or Merryn?

StaunchMomma · 19/07/2023 13:21

Faraday is just too Faraday Cage. It may well catch her a really crap nickname.

Iris is nice. Lots of the traditional older lady names are lovely and 2 syllable names tend to go well with more surnames. Ida, Edie, Eva, Alice etc

Have you considered a French name, if you want something a bit different? Matilde, Adeline, Celeste, Ottilie, Elisa etc.

Christ, it's so hard choosing. You'll know better once she's here. Sometimes the names we love just don't fit once you have them in your arms.

My other half wanted to call ours Calypso so I'm really glad I had a boy 😂

Riapia · 19/07/2023 13:22

Christmas Day?

toodlesofoodles · 19/07/2023 13:24

What about Fallon if you want her to sound like she's got a last name for a first name? At least it's actually used as a first name for a girl.

I think I'd rather be called Michael if you're naming her after the scientist.

No, Phaedra wasn’t a goddess. She tried to seduce her stepson then accused him of raping her when he turned her down, Poseidon kills him, then she kills herself.

Daphnis156 · 19/07/2023 14:06

Please don't lumber her with Faraday.

Iris is old fashioned, or was, but is far better than Faraday.

Notellinganyone · 19/07/2023 14:30

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee - Phaedra famously shagged her stepson! It’s a bit like calling your daughter Medea.

Spanielsarepainless · 19/07/2023 14:41

Planck
Heisenberg
Newton

PurpleChrayne · 19/07/2023 16:20

Faraday sounds like a Yorkshireman answering the question "How long did you go for?"

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 19/07/2023 20:31

Lol!! Pity, its a beautiful name, from the looks it comes from the Greek word for light, but yeah, the rest was news to me!

AuntieStella · 19/07/2023 20:38

Riapia · 19/07/2023 13:22

Christmas Day?

Faraday did found the Christmas Lectures.....

Ellmau · 20/07/2023 00:51

Iris is beautiful.

Faraday is awful, sorry.

MixedTocopherols · 20/07/2023 00:56

I know three people called Phaedra. Three! I can hardly believe it myself.

anyway. Not convinced about Faraday but I am curious about what your inspiration for it was OP

BananaBunches · 20/07/2023 01:36

I don't like Faraday for a first name - it's a surname!

Farah / Farrah is nice.

I have a friend called Fardeh who pronounces it Faraday. But another lady I know with that name pronounces it fa- ree- da with the emphasis on the ree sound.
