Sky or Hazel for a boy

I like Sky and Hazel for boys, and was wondering what the general opinion was on their usability. Sky has been consistently used for boys in England and Wales, albeit fewer than ten babies a year, though Hazel has never registered as a boys name. I do like softer boys names generally and many like like Rowan, Robin, Sacha which are also well used for girls. For these names, I don't like them as girls names.

These aren't names I'm seriously considering using, mostly as I like other names more and it's a no from my husband anyway, but just wondered what other people thought of them

I actually know a boy as well as a grown man called Sky. So that one doesn't stand out too much to me. But you cannot call a boy Hazel. It would not be fun for him.

I don't think I'd say 10 per year is slow and steady - against the number of boys born every year - about 300-400 thousand - 10 boys named Sky is 0 really.

Everyone at school will call him Sky TV.
I've only ever heard of Hazel as a girl's name. Sorry OP.

I met a baby boy called Skye last week. The general consensus among my colleagues, was what were the parents thinking. Poor baby will have to explain himself, his whole life. Don't do it

I think Willow is very much a girls' name now. I wonder though if there was a smattering of baby boy Willows born in the late 80s after the film of the same name.

I love Hazel for a boy. I love Watership Down. It’s true it won’t work on a man though.

They're nature names so sure, why not? I really love the idea of Hazel for a boy. If Rowan and Robin can be for a boy or girl then why not Hazel?

Sage or Moss are nature names with more masculine vibes to me.

I wouldn’t choose either of those names. By going for something weird, awkward youd be putting him at a disadvantage. Society judges others on their name (however unfairly).

Those are both girls names so why would u lumber your poor child with a girls name when he's a boy?

I see Sky and Hazel as girls names especially Hazel which is a very well known established name for a girl
Rowan, Robin and Sasha have always been used for fine boys so not at all like Hazel

If it is small numbers then it likely depends on who you mix with. If you are going to buy a smallholding and unschool your children alongside similar families then it is likely to suit. It still may be difficult for your adult child later on if they don't continue with that lifestyle but they can always use another name. I would pick something that would be accepted in your community for the first 18 years at least.

I suppose there's Basil and Linden, but I wouldn't.

I like Martin myself, but it's well out of fashion.

There are very few good nature names for boys.

Dominic Cooper’s character in Mamma Mia is called Sky, and there’s Sky Masterson in Guys & Dolls, who was played by Marlon Brando (very manly!) in the film.

I couldn't guess either way whether Sky was male or female. The man in Mamma Mia is called Sky.

Hazel I only know as a girls' name (apart from the rabbit).

Honestly, Hazel in particular is a girls name. I get you want to look interesting / different but you don't need to do it through your kids name.

FFS, you are naming a grown man here, who will have a career and possibly hold senior positions of authority & responsibility in his life. Naming him Hazel, which everyone knows is a female name, would be completely stupid and cruel. Sky isn’t much better.

Sky is a young woman aged 26
Hazel is also a woman, aged 60

I quiite like the unisex vibe on boys' names, like Jesse, Sandy, Kim, Sacha, Casey
But Hazel is not a boy's name
Nor is sky really but it's not quite as obviously feminine.

I agree with your husband. I always think dont give a child a name they have to constantly explain- not good. They're for girls I think.

In the mix if you want something earthy

You could use Hazem which is Arabic or Haze which is Dutch

Or Haz - our ‘favourite’ Prince’s nickname
