Sky or Hazel for a boy

I like Sky and Hazel for boys, and was wondering what the general opinion was on their usability. Sky has been consistently used for boys in England and Wales, albeit fewer than ten babies a year, though Hazel has never registered as a boys name. I do like softer boys names generally and many like like Rowan, Robin, Sacha which are also well used for girls. For these names, I don't like them as girls names.

These aren't names I'm seriously considering using, mostly as I like other names more and it's a no from my husband anyway, but just wondered what other people thought of them

Both Willow and Hazel are awful for a boy, Sky is okay in my opinion. Imagine him at aged 15 full of teenage angst "hello I'm willow" or aged 60 as a balding man "hi I'm hazel"
No.

No, neither. Just no. You can go off piste with girls but not so much boys.

embolass · 29/01/2023 19:26

🤦🏻‍♀️

Orangebadger · 29/01/2023 19:27

Nope to both. Not a fan of Hazel for a girl let alone a boy. Sky for a boy, nope. I don't mind Skye for a girl, but not a huge fan of it.

VivaVivaa · 29/01/2023 19:35

I think on the right type, Sky would be okay. I’m thinking of someone independent, individual and confident. I imagine my DF, DFil and DH would not be okay with the name Sky as they are all quite quiet and introverted and would hate the attention it drew. Hugely extroverted DS might have suited the name Sky.

I can’t imagine Hazel on any man at all. Sorry.

Perriewinkle · 29/01/2023 19:43

Dont be ridiculous

I agree. I worked with a girl called Rainbow. Would suit the right personality, bright and bubbly. This girl did not live up to her name, barely smiled. I felt quite sorry for her living with a name that really set quite high expectations of her!

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/01/2023 22:47

Behave yourself

I am glad to hear you aren’t considering it. Keep it that way.

blippyissilly · 30/01/2023 22:47

Neither

Devakai · 31/01/2023 22:36

Love Sky for a boy. I've met Caribbean men called Hazel.

EzzieM · 31/01/2023 23:51

Both ridiculous OP.

Why not just call him Arabella or Penelope 🙄

FFS give your son a name he can actually say without feeling like an idiot.

Maybe Rainbow was permanently pissed off about er her stupid name?

bellarosabella · 03/02/2023 07:59

Sky - yes

Hazel - no

There's a male Sky on the Netflix show "Winx" which was quite popular so I think many people won't have a problem imagining a male Sky (of my generation (Gen Z) and younger). Not sure how it would be perceived among others.

Charles

bellarosabella · 03/02/2023 08:05

Oh and I think Skyler nn Sky is very usable for a boy (Sky as well in my opinion, but not Hazel).

It's useable but it's very Utah Church of LDS.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 03/02/2023 08:11

Not great for a boy to be honest. I love Rowan and Asher (Ash).

To me it's very skater/surfer guy. Not religious at all.

I know a young Forest, might get run shouted at him a lot though 🤷🏼‍♀️

😂😂

Hazel = Watership Down
Sky = Christ no, it's bad enough on a girl
Willow = Christ no, part two

DS3 was very nearly named Sacha, but we're Jewish so nobody batted an eyelid. You might get the usual Sasha misspelling and assumptions he's a girl though.

TheFireflies · 03/02/2023 08:29

yes, Hazel in Watership Down was male. But he was also a rabbit.

Calling an actual human male baby Hazel would be cruel.

Englishash · 03/02/2023 08:32

Neither. Both summon up girls names to me and likely to list people. You'd be subjecting your son to a childhood of teasing. Children can (unwittingly sometimes) be cruel.

justcouldntthinkofausername · 03/02/2023 08:34

I wouldn't OP.
I quite liked Darcy for a boy but there's far too many girls named Darcy, same as Hazel and Sky.

Out of the 2 of yours I think Sky would be the one slightly 'less girlie' there's probably a few male Skys in US I imagine, but not here ?
I could be wrong

AutumnScream · 03/02/2023 09:07

Hazel is a man in umbrella academy

Ok. This is what we need to be investigating. WHY is it ok to give a girl a name more commonly associated with males than it is to give a boy a name that's considered girly?

If girls are now being called James and Dylan then surely boys can be called Hazel and Willow.

TheBirdintheCave · 03/02/2023 09:37

Eugh, I should read my sentences before I post. That should be 'but not to give a boy' etc etc.
