What would you think if you met a baby 'Hades'?

Wow. I just RTFT and was hoping for a different outcome. This has to be proof that registrars shouldn't be able to register certain names. If a child turns 18 and decides to change his name by deed poll to Hades then that's different. But to do that to a kid is horrific.

And I'd actually find it hard to write things like Dear Hades,
Happy 11th Birthday,
Lots of love Auntie G.
Over the years. It seems entirely wrong to be forced to address a child like that.

If he has a middle name - please let him have a boring middle name !- I'd stubbornly use that. Normally I'd disagree with family not using the given name but in this case, using it feels abusive.

mathanxiety · 31/05/2022 00:24

I would flat out refuse to use the name and tell them of my intention. It's horrible on so many levels. Use his middle name.

YY to this.

FictionalCharacter · 31/05/2022 00:47

How awful. People will do a double take when they're told his name. Some might even laugh, thinking they're joking. It's a bad enough name for a dog.

gggbird · 31/05/2022 04:43

He has a family middle name which is definitely not fashionable and these days a bit of a jokey name but non offensive, so yeah there's that option

Tbf I address him as 'baby' as much as physically possible, it feels so cringey to say his name.

It’s awful that they’re going along with it. Even if they named him Hayden or Hayes but CALLED him Hades as a nickname it would be far better.

duckme · 31/05/2022 05:44

I mean, my first actual thought was of the incredibly sassy and downright hilarious Disney villain from the film Hercules (fab film, maybe that’s their inspiration?).
But yeah, it’s hell. They can’t name their child that.

gggbird · 25/04/2022 17:44

So the association with 'the hades' is that strong?

You are joking aren't you?!? Of course it's still strong! Try Hadrian, Aidrian, Aiden or Haydn for similar sound alternatives that don't make the poor child sound like a harbinger of doom.

Whitehorsegirl · 31/05/2022 07:54

Why would you want to call a kid after a god of the underworld?

Would suit a dog or a horse. Not a child...

If you must use it as a middle name, but that's it.

celestebellman · 31/05/2022 08:17

I'd start calling him Des for short - now!

ForestFae · 31/05/2022 08:18

I don’t hate it. I’d think that his parents were into Greek mythology. I nearly called my daughter Persephone though, so make of that what you will.

LauraNicolaides · 31/05/2022 08:38

they said that with time we will all just associate the name with their baby and not the association.

Sorry to hear that it went ahead @gggbird

They're right I think, that the name will start to seem less awful to those who use it for him all the time. But that's never the problem for bad names. It's when he is introduced to people for the first time. And it's not the parents who suffer, they sound too oblivious to notice the giggling that will be going on behind their backs.

Flump1234 · 31/05/2022 09:02

Maybe you can come up with some nickname, like "Dee" (like the Des in Ha-des)? Or Haddy...

DivorcedAndDelighted · 31/05/2022 11:57

I'd start using an abbreviation right away. If he's referred to as "Hadie" / Haydie then hopefully people will assume he's just Haydon, and won't know that his parents are plonkers.
Poor kid. And I say that as the child of very very wacky parents who were really quite considerate about only giving us wacky middle names.

Irishfarmer · 31/05/2022 16:39

Oh wow I can't believe they went ahead with it. The poor child!

Give him a nn immediately Des maybe. You never know he might think it is very cool as a teen. Not so sure about as an adult when trying to find a decent job. I wouldn't like it!!

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/05/2022 16:45

Why on Earth would anyone call their child Hades?

stacestation · 31/05/2022 21:29

I'd think it was try hard on the part of the parents. Though the related Persephone seems to be fine, on the whole? Perhaps because there are options for shortening it?

ItsAlwaysThere · 31/05/2022 21:33

Hades? Why? Don't have a Persephone too whatever you do!

ItsAlwaysThere · 31/05/2022 21:34

Haiden would be nicer

Mosmuma · 02/06/2022 17:35

That's quite sad if it's true - bordering on abusive. Poor child - the authorities should intervene when people use stupid names like this.

Oh come on, that’s so hyperbolic.

Great minds!

Also made me think of this guy

blameitonthecaffeine · 04/06/2022 09:45

I'd be determinedly calling him Haydie or Haddy in the hope that it would catch on and everyone would assume he was a Hayden.

I don't normally agree with family being disrespectful to a parent's name choice but there is a line!
