What would you think if you met a baby 'Hades'?

Perhaps that's a way in to raise this? Ask him if he would ever change his own name to Hades, and if not, why not?

SpiderVersed · 25/04/2022 18:44

Your brother is an absolute tool to consider it! Are you sure it isn’t a wind up? We told everyone DS1 was going to be Elvis just to get them to stop asking.

If not…
Maybe suggest Voldemort or Ghengis as middle names?

inappropriateraspberry · 25/04/2022 18:44

I'd think it's an awful name, and it would be misspelled and mispronounced all the time!
Why on earth (or not!) would they think it's a suitable name? May as well call him Satan or Hitler.

Scarecrowrowboat · 25/04/2022 18:44

I'm Greek and would be laughing at the parents of a child with that name and I'd feel v sorry for the child.

Echobelly · 25/04/2022 18:45

I'd think it was given by someone who didn't understand the negative connotations and was a bit dim but trying to be cultured (sorry!)

WhoWants2Know · 25/04/2022 18:46

Even if they believe Hades was "misunderstood", the overwhelming association of the name is with death. Just like Judas is associated with betrayal. Do they really want people to associate their child with death?

Great name for a big black dog, though.

Pinkmagic1 · 25/04/2022 18:47

Almost as bad as the little boy called Lucifer I came across a couple of years ago!

gggbird · 25/04/2022 18:49

Sadly can confirm this is not a joke.

The only saving grace is that there is a backlog on registrar appointments so they have longer to wait than normal, so there is still a small amount of hope... very small though as I know decorative stuff has been bought with the name on it in the last few days...

Yet Cora (/Persephone) is wife of Hades, queen of the underworld and relatively popular.

Angrymum22 · 25/04/2022 18:53

It would confirm my opinion that some people just shouldn’t be allowed to have children.

scottishnames · 25/04/2022 18:55

OP Goodness, that's tricky.
I'm afraid I'd probably be direct and say something like 'Well, your baby, your choice, of course, but I'd rather not name a son of mine afrer a rapist, even if he was a god.'

Or give them some good books on ancient Grek mythology - for themselves as well as for poor little future baby Hades.

There's lots of artwork by long-dead great artist males on "the rape of Proserpina/Persephone" (I wonder why ....) www.artble.com/artists/gian_lorenzo_bernini/sculpture/the_rape_of_persephone
"Rape" then meant abduction, but of course everyone knew what followed, alas. Might they respond to that?

Or else = this is much. much , much less likely, start a conversation about compost (!!) 'Wonderful, isn't it, how all this stinky slimy rotting stuff feeds new plants? Strange to say - but I'm sure you know - how the same ghastly rotting dead underworld stuff was honoured by the ancient Greeks as the world of the god Hades.'

FourChimneys · 25/04/2022 18:57

It's the sort of name that a registrar should be able to refuse to register.

CorsicaDreaming · 25/04/2022 18:59

gggbird · 25/04/2022 18:35

How do I approach this with them in a sensitive way Blush I was hoping other family members would take the hit but everyone seems to be dodging it.

I would be tempted to print off this thread and say to them that you were a bit worried about the potential impact of such an unusual choice of name but wondered if you were just being unreasonable in your own views, so thought you would anonymously get some opinions of strangers - and you just thought they should see the answers before they finally chose that name. You don't mean to meddle, but you just wanted them to be fully aware of other people's views on the name.

Yes it will probably cause a bit of flak but I would rather that than stand by silent as my nephew was saddled with the name Hades!

You might want to cut out any of your own later posts where you sound more judgemental but it is fairly reasonable how you first started the question off so could include that.

At the end of the day though as they are the parents if they do decide to do that, that's their call - and I guess you don't want to ruin your relationship with them over it, so it is a tough call

BluKorner · 25/04/2022 19:00

You posted about this a little while ago didn’t you?

They still went ahead with the name? Damn! Poor child!

Baileysoncereal · 25/04/2022 19:00

I actually love it, but given the connotations and my lack of any related heritage, I wouldn’t name my child it.

CorsicaDreaming · 25/04/2022 19:02

Yes, and you like Baileys on cereal so I think that sums things up 😜🤮

Ok. So what would you do if your brother and SIL have just had a baby and are looking like they are settled on Hades?

I agree with the 99% here that it's unfair and bad. But wanted to check I wasn't over thinking the significance.

They are aware of the link but don't think it's a big deal, and follow some new interpretation that Hades isn't actually bad was just misunderstood yada yada yada.

Do I risk a big fall out and push harder or do I accept that 'parents know best'?

There was a thread on here recently about some fucking idiots people that had picked the name Genghis for their baby. Your brother and SIL should set up a play date with baby Hades and baby Genghis. That would be sweet.

My kids have names from mythology. I'd think the parents of a child called Hades weren't very well read, probably. If it turned out they were well read and made this decision anyway I'd think they were attention seekers and didn't have very good judgement.

Me too.

scottishnames · 25/04/2022 19:10

As I said, OP let's see the link to their "new interpretation" . Classical gods and goddesses are pretty well-trodden ground. There is always room for something, new, however, but they HAVE to be prepared - like anyone else - to submit their new info/theory to scrutiny. That's the way it works. No-one can assert just any old thing and expect to be believed.

OhamIreally · 25/04/2022 19:12

@Tsuni I do think Genghis is used in Turkey though, I used to work with a guy with that name and he was evidently from a well educated family (although he had a bit of a temper Grin).

If you look on LinkedIn there's quite a few.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/04/2022 19:13

I think your child may change his name just as soon as he’s able to.

I haven't asked them for a link to their source, but I've googled it's along the lines of the stuff in the first post in this link www.quora.com/Why-is-Hades-seen-as-bad-and-evil?top_ans=153872461

I mean the name is perfectly normal in other cultures but yes, let’s assume they’re all fucking idiots…

VeryQuaintIrene · 25/04/2022 19:17

Please try to persuade them not to do this - show them the almost unanimous appalled responses on this thread!
