What would you think if you met a baby 'Hades'?

There were 3 registered in 2017. Less than 3 (I don't believe there's any way to see how many exactly) in every other year from 1996 to 2019.

How did you find that data?
... or are you SIL?

Great name for a Rottweiler though.

Funnily enough Persephone is fine to be used.

Not fair on Hades.

scottishnames · 25/04/2022 18:18

I HAVE read the full thread.
What 'new interpretation' please?
Hades was a rapist and kept souls prisoner.
Yes, he is part of the triad of gods that rule heaven, earth and the underworld. They are part of the eternal cycle of life. Even the ancient Greeks said that from death and decay (eg in compost) new life can be generated.

But just have a read of all the classical sources quoted here:
www.theoi.com/Khthonios/Haides.html
That's what people at the time the name was current thought. They did NOT name their children 'Hades'.

So please, what 'new interpretation'?

MargaritasOnMe · 25/04/2022 18:19

I wouldn't. DH loves the name Lucifer and earnestly tried to inform me that it would be fine for ds3 because "nobody is religious anymore" Grin I did not agree!

Maireas · 25/04/2022 18:20

Didn't they name their first child Beelzebub?.

Just assumed you hadn't realised that it's NOT me planning on calling a baby Hades, and if not why did your post came across so aggressive 🤷 ?

Chardonnay's Persephone was a VICTIM not a perpetrator. She's in some ways a symbol of hope and new (partial) life after a dreadful event. It's still not a name I'd chose, however.

PukkaP · 25/04/2022 18:24

I'd think the parents had lost the plot

scottishnames · 25/04/2022 18:24

OP I did not meant to be personally aggressive, so I apologise for that. It was not my intention. It's just that Hades really is a pretty awful name to give a modern child, and that needs to be said. Please - if you would be so kind - encourage your relatives to read what the classical authors said about Hades in the link that I posted.

RoseslnTheHospital · 25/04/2022 18:26

I'd wonder if it was a name used in a different culture that happened to be spelt the same as the Greek god. Then after checking and realising not, then I'd wonder what on earth possessed the parents to go with it.

Thanks. I'm on 'your side' so was confused with the tone. And thank you for taking the time to give a detailed response.

Given that the name is so rare in the UK, and that your DB/ SIL are considering using it for their firstborn, do you think that it's wise to be posting about this on MN? There's a good chance she may use MN, and would doubtless recognise herself if she does. Might that create some families tension ?

G3m · 25/04/2022 18:31

You realise what it means, right? 😟

I've taken a calculated risk, and really needed some outside perspective as to whether I was overthinking this. Tbh I would rather be outed and they change the name than the poor child be called Hades.

I would think the parents were utter idiots and would have loved to see the poor registrars face when they turned up.

I know, but still a strong negative connection.

I know of an Antigone. Another no no, me.

CPL593H · 25/04/2022 18:35

They could go for a full set. Persephone, Hades and Charon Smith.

Actually, I could see Charon becoming popular, as long as people don't associate it with Sharon, which is currently 50 odd years off the 100 year cycle, by my reckoning.

gggbird · 25/04/2022 18:35

How do I approach this with them in a sensitive way Blush I was hoping other family members would take the hit but everyone seems to be dodging it.

I would think poor , poor child . His dad should change his own name to Hades by deed pole if he likes it so much and see how it feels to use it as a given name .

The irony is that their names are so bog standard- think John and Lucy.
