What would you think if you met a baby 'Hades'?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hades

Although it is actually the Greek god, in my mind it is an equivalent word for hell.

I would think "bloody idiots" Hmm about the parents and "poor kid" about the child.

If I was a potential employer and that name came up as an application from someone with equally good qualifications to other candidates but I needed to whittle down the field, Hades would be top of the discard pile.

Sorry to be blunt, but that's the truth.

Ncwinc · 25/04/2022 17:51

How about Pluto? Grin

Lio · 25/04/2022 17:52

I'd assume they lived somewhere out in the Styx <boom tish>

CorsicaDreaming · 25/04/2022 17:54

Pluto is a cartoon dog. Not much better.

Give me a straight-forward name to be found in a local graveyard near you any day...

TheVanguardSix · 25/04/2022 17:55

It's like asking 'Does Anal Fissure really have that strong a connection to the anus? Or can we just about get away with calling our child Anal Fissure? Maybe nobody will put two and two together.'

OP, this is very much one of those name ideas where you will look back and think ‘whoa those pregnancy hormones were making me crazy, thank Zeus God I didn’t name him that’

LaTangerina · 25/04/2022 17:56

I really like it, it's different!

You win all the prizes for that one! 😆

😂😂😂

Chakraleaf · 25/04/2022 17:58

I would think it was unfair.

gluenotsoup · 25/04/2022 17:58

I’d think it was a bit cruel. If you want a name based on mythology, pick one with good connotations, and know your legends 😳

What would you think if you met a baby 'Hades'?

I'd think the parents were either absolute idiots, or so desperate to appear unconventional that they didn't care what they put their child through to do it.

Gowithme · 25/04/2022 18:01

Did you know?
In Greek mythology, Hades is both the land of the dead and the god who rules there. Hades the god (who the Greeks also called Pluto) is the brother of Zeus and Poseidon, who rule the skies and the seas. The realm called Hades, where he rules with his wife Persephone, is the region under the earth, full of mineral wealth and fertility and home to dead souls. Hades today is sometimes used as a polite term for Hell ("It's hotter than Hades in here!").

My first thought was - why the hell would you name your child hell?

gggbird · 25/04/2022 18:02

Ok. So what would you do if your brother and SIL have just had a baby and are looking like they are settled on Hades?

I agree with the 99% here that it's unfair and bad. But wanted to check I wasn't over thinking the significance.

They are aware of the link but don't think it's a big deal, and follow some new interpretation that Hades isn't actually bad was just misunderstood yada yada yada.

Do I risk a big fall out and push harder or do I accept that 'parents know best'?

Deux · 25/04/2022 18:02

I’d assume that the parents had no idea who Hades was though I suspect it’d be pretty obvious. If you want to go for the Greek mythology vibe there are much better names out there.

EufyProsser · 25/04/2022 18:02

It has literally NO OTHER ASSOCIATION than with hell.

DuesToTheDirt · 25/04/2022 18:03

I'd wonder if it was a name in a language/culture I'm unfamiliar with. And if not, I'd think the parents were morons.

Deux · 25/04/2022 18:04

Maybe the registrar will reject it. Tell them it’s like calling a baby Hilter or something.

BotterMon · 25/04/2022 18:05

Oh dear. Your DB and SIL sound as if they need a reality check.

How to alienate your children 101. At what age can they change their name by deed poll?

NewbieDivergent · 25/04/2022 18:06

I think Hayden is a good compromise

Hallyup89 · 25/04/2022 18:06

I'd think the parents were complete tools at best, abusive at worst and I'd hope the registrar would tell them they couldn't name their baby that.

gggbird · 25/04/2022 18:08

DSIL tells me there were 3 Hades registered in a recent year, so unfortunately the registrar is unlikely to reject it.

I'm trying to verify this on ONS but can only find spreadsheets with 'top 100' names. How can I see the 'rarer' names?

scottishnames · 25/04/2022 18:10

OP I don't know what you mean by "the Hades". There is only one - an 'infernal' terrifying god, so dreadful that the ancient Greeks and Romans often dared not speak his name.
And he was a rapist and an imprisoner (he kept souls captive). And - at the most lenient of interpretations - a con-man. He tricked his (forced) much younger bride into eating a single seed, so that she could not return for ever to the land of the living.

As a previous poster has said, I'd either think you very, very uneducated or ignorant and lazy as to not having researched the name properly) or else trying far too hard.
Or else troll.

I would judge the parents to be either massive attention seekers or idiots.
