Marlowe? For a girl

DC due this month. We’re having a surprise but have picked the name Arthur for a boy.

For a girl, DH likes his grandmothers name Meredith but I’m not too keen. I did however love the name Marlowe I’ve had it on my baby name list since I was about 18 and made one just after we started dating!

He’s a bit worried about his family banging on about how different/unique it is but I said we can’t let that stop us using the name? As he does like it too. The fact it’s unique is a con for him

Is it reaaaaally that unique? I think it’s lovely and a bit different but not enough for it to be perceived as bad

OP posts:

Why would you want to name your child after a town in Buckinghamshire? Confused

WeasilyPleased · 17/04/2022 23:27

I much prefer Meredith tbh. I really don't like Marlowe at all but it's not my baby.

PuppyPowerTool · 17/04/2022 23:30

It's a pleasant enough town, but a girls name? Nah.

ImInStealthMode · 17/04/2022 23:33

Have you just added an E to the town near High Wycombe?

Was he/she conceived after a night on the pills in said town? Confused

ImInStealthMode · 17/04/2022 23:34

Ps. Meredith is a beautiful name.

Dazedandconfused10 · 17/04/2022 23:34

It reminds me of Christopher Marlowe who worte my favourite play. I like it.

PuppyPowerTool · 17/04/2022 23:34

I like Meredith too.

Grumpsy · 17/04/2022 23:35

Personally I am not a fan. Is a town as others have said, I would also say it’s a pets name, and a male pet at that. Not my child though, and to each their own.

MarmiteCoriander · 17/04/2022 23:38

I immediately think of Marlowe as a dog! Or the town of Harlow. Meredith itself isn't a common name and much nicer IMO. What about Merryn?

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 17/04/2022 23:39

It’s my cat’s name and he’s a boy!

ineedafairygodmother · 17/04/2022 23:40

I like both Meredith and Marlowe. It's your baby, who cares what anyone else thinks!! When naming my DD I chose a name which couldn't be shortened (I hate shortened versions of names, especially mine) and flowed with her surname Smile

dangerrabbit · 17/04/2022 23:40

I know a girl named Marlowe so she would not be the only one

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 17/04/2022 23:40

That was to Grumpsy and he’s named for Christopher dazed!

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/04/2022 23:41

It’s a town.. it’s odd

I like Meredith though.

Kite22 · 17/04/2022 23:42

My thinking is it is a town. But you have got the spelling wrong.
Why would you give that as a name to someone ? Confused

Dazedandconfused10 · 17/04/2022 23:43

@ColonelNobbyNobbs I see you are a Pratchett fan too!

lollipoprainbow · 17/04/2022 23:49

I think sienna millers daughter is called Marlowe.

bearfood · 17/04/2022 23:51

I love it! Like the Christopher Marlowe connection too, like a PP.

Bobbybobbins · 17/04/2022 23:54

I prefer Meredith but Marlowe is ok - maybe Mari as a nickname?

Fivebeanchilli · 17/04/2022 23:55

Meredith is beautiful.
I really dislike Marlowe but it's certainly not unique. I know several under 6 (all from a rather socially deprived background).

inappropriateraspberry · 17/04/2022 23:58

No. It's a surname.

inappropriateraspberry · 18/04/2022 00:00

What's with all these 'yooneek' names? Popular/common names are just that for a reason - because they are nice names that people like!

Neverreturntoathread · 18/04/2022 00:00

Meredith is way way nicer than Marlowe, which is a surname and also a place.

Your daughter won’t thank you for picking Marlowe. Go with Meredith, it’s beautiful.

Lemonlemon88 · 18/04/2022 00:01

I don't think Marlowe is that unusual and i prefer it to Meredith.

Nogardenersworld · 18/04/2022 00:06

Marlowe is a name for dogs not children imo

Meredith is lovely though
Or what about Margaux?
