Marlowe? For a girl

DC due this month. We’re having a surprise but have picked the name Arthur for a boy.

For a girl, DH likes his grandmothers name Meredith but I’m not too keen. I did however love the name Marlowe I’ve had it on my baby name list since I was about 18 and made one just after we started dating!

He’s a bit worried about his family banging on about how different/unique it is but I said we can’t let that stop us using the name? As he does like it too. The fact it’s unique is a con for him

Is it reaaaaally that unique? I think it’s lovely and a bit different but not enough for it to be perceived as bad

Certainly am Dazed and I like Richard Linklater too!

Babadook76 · 18/04/2022 00:08

I’ve never heard of Marlowe but I like it. It’s FAR better than Meredith imo. All names are made up, including all of my kids names which are apparently ‘made up and modern’ (they’re not). I will say I’m not keen on the spelling but I’m not sure why? I’m not sure of a better way of of spelling it. Don’t let people put you off

Happenchance · 18/04/2022 00:09

I like it and it's meaning. One thing that puts me off it is its similarity to Arlo, which is popular at the moment.

I'm not a fan of Meredith and it could be difficult for your DD to pronounce if she has a speech impediment.

How about Mallory?

Happenchance · 18/04/2022 00:11

@Nogardenersworld

Marlowe is a name for dogs not children imo

Meredith is lovely though
Or what about Margaux?

Are you confusing Marlowe with Marley? I've never met a four legged Marlowe.
backtobusy · 18/04/2022 00:42

I much prefer Meredith.
Marlowe is a rather 90's American name.
(I currently live in the USA)

ScheisseMinelli · 18/04/2022 00:52

Yep Meredith MUCH nicer than Marlowe

Kanaloa · 18/04/2022 02:30

I like Marlowe and think it’s really pretty, but I also like Meredith. Both nice names.

teezletangler · 18/04/2022 02:38

Meredith is lovely but I also really like Marlowe. The town is spelled Marlow, so that's not the main association for me. I think of
Christopher Marlowe. I don't see why it's a big deal that it's a surname and a place name- my DD is Romilly which is also both of those things, and that name has a lot of fans on MN.Let's also remember that Florence Nightingale was named after the city. It isn't a new trend.

Aquaticshark11 · 18/04/2022 09:04

Meredith is really old and frumpy (just my opinion, I know it's a classic name but I don't like it) and Marlowe has quite an unpleasant sound to my ears too. I couldn't picture either name on a little girl.

TheTempest · 18/04/2022 09:08

I have a dog called Marlowe. He’s a boy and a bit of a dick so it’s a no from me. Meredith is much nicer!

Acheyknees · 18/04/2022 09:31

Margot? Much nicer than Marlowe.

antibacterial · 18/04/2022 09:35

I love Marlowe hate Meredith

LaMagdalena · 18/04/2022 09:36

Makes me think of Raymond Chandler novels.

Noshowlomo · 18/04/2022 09:37

Sienna Miller has a daughter named Marlowe. It’s lovely.
Meredith is also lovely but if you watch the office US then Meredith is always the alcoholic crazy women !

Friedaseyebrow · 18/04/2022 09:41

I like Marlowe but much prefer Meredith.

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 18/04/2022 09:46

I think Marlowe is lovely!

Chaoslatte · 18/04/2022 10:10

@Dazedandconfused10

It reminds me of Christopher Marlowe who worte my favourite play. I like it.
But if it was after the playwright then why not Christina which is an actual first name? Naming someone after someone’s surname is weird.
CheeseCheeseCheeseCheese · 18/04/2022 12:33

@backtobusy

I much prefer Meredith. Marlowe is a rather 90's American name. (I currently live in the USA)
Funny, I think of Meredith as a 90s American name because I first heard it in the 90s "The Parent Trap"
FayCarew · 18/04/2022 12:37

I really dislike Meredith. Marlowe is a surname

WhyTheWhales · 18/04/2022 13:30

Personal taste and everything and not my baby blah blah, but honestly, I think Marlowe is a horrible name for anyone. I used to work in Marlow and the town is quite nice, if a little vanilla.

Meredith is nice, but if you don't like it you shouldn't use it. I like the suggestion of Margot as an alternative to Marlowe. It's quite popular (or so people say on here), but I only know one.

MajesticElephant · 18/04/2022 13:32

Marlowes is a run down shopping centre - do you like Hemel Hempstead that much?

Grumpsy · 18/04/2022 13:57

@ColonelNobbyNobbs fantastic name for a cat 😅

Also, I appreciate your livre of Terry pratchett 🙂

spearmynt · 18/04/2022 14:31

I really like it. If you want something a bit more popular with a similar sound, what about Harlow?

MsMiaWallace · 18/04/2022 14:32

@Chaoslatte

Why would you want to name your child after a town in Buckinghamshire? Confused
It has to be after Christopher Marlowe surely?
Firebird83 · 18/04/2022 15:26

I know one who spells it Marlo. I prefer that spelling.
