Marlowe? For a girl

DC due this month. We’re having a surprise but have picked the name Arthur for a boy.

For a girl, DH likes his grandmothers name Meredith but I’m not too keen. I did however love the name Marlowe I’ve had it on my baby name list since I was about 18 and made one just after we started dating!

He’s a bit worried about his family banging on about how different/unique it is but I said we can’t let that stop us using the name? As he does like it too. The fact it’s unique is a con for him

Is it reaaaaally that unique? I think it’s lovely and a bit different but not enough for it to be perceived as bad

I'm not keen. There was a little girl at the baby group I went to called Harlow which I also inwardly winced at. I'm not sure why - I like unusual names generally but they just sound sort of...industrial or something?

NellesVilla · 18/04/2022 15:39

I think Sienna Miller’s daughter is called Marlow/e.

NellesVilla · 18/04/2022 15:40

Love the name Marla- not that that’s any help!

lightnesspixie · 18/04/2022 15:50

Well I think Marlowe is a super pretty name I'd go for it :)

GiltEdges · 18/04/2022 15:59

I know of a little girl named Marlow Rose, so not unique but obviously without the ‘e’. Personally, I prefer Meredith.

mamaoffourdc · 18/04/2022 16:06

I know of a boy Marlow- I like both

notarevealingname · 18/04/2022 16:16

Don't like the spelling with E on the end. Marlow is better but still not keen. Meredith is beautiful. I know a little Meredith, mimi for short

duckie3 · 18/04/2022 16:48

Meredith it awful but I actually think marlowe quite cool, I like it.

TooManyPJs · 18/04/2022 17:29

I love it.

SallyWD · 18/04/2022 17:39

Meredith is a lovely name. I really dislike Marlowe.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 18/04/2022 17:50

@Firebird83 Marlo makes me think of Marlo Stanfield, the most cold-blooded gangster in The Wire.

I like Meredith but think of it as a boy’s name.

Marlowe is naff.

GucciBear · 18/04/2022 18:59

Marlowe is NOT unique. Unique does not mean unusual - it means only one of its kind. Marlow/Marlowe is a dreadful name to land anyone with.

Madamecastafiore · 18/04/2022 19:10

Just makes me think of Harlow, although Marlow is infinitely nicer, the town. The name sounds v common and not in a 'there are many of them' sense.

Lunificent · 18/04/2022 19:12

A test would be to imagine whether or not you’d be able to shout the name aloud e.g. if you’d list them.
With this name, I’m not sure I would.

Chaoslatte · 19/04/2022 11:21

@MsMiaWallace if OP were keen to name her child after Christopher Marlowe surely Christopher would be her choice for a boy?

OP if you are in fact really into Elizabethan literature how about Jane after Jane Lumley, Elizabeth after Elizabeth Cary, or Isabella after Isabella Whitney?

Marlowe sounds as awful as Jonson or Shakespeare as a first name.

MsTSwift · 19/04/2022 11:23

Meredith is lovely

gingerhills · 19/04/2022 11:25

I like it.

I like Meredith too.

FairyCakeWings · 19/04/2022 11:25

It’s a pretty name but Marlow is a place. Everyone will wonder if you’re naming her after the place you conceived.

How about Harlow Meredith?

Chaoslatte · 19/04/2022 13:05

@FairyCakeWings Harlow is a place as well!

FairyCakeWings · 19/04/2022 13:11

Is it? Ah well, I learned something new.

Crackersnack · 19/04/2022 13:13

I really like both of them

IStandWithMaya · 19/04/2022 13:46

Not keen on Marlow / Marlowe

Gowithme · 19/04/2022 14:08

It sounds to me like a deprived town in Essex. I could imagine it next to Jaywick. Meredith is very pretty though.

Jossbow · 19/04/2022 14:22
