Venus, Story, Ember or Apricot?
I've narrowed my name list down to these.
I want something a little different to the top 20 names if possible.
Middle name would be Jean.
Which is your favourite in order please or what do you think?
Tysm for the help x

No, no, no & no.
I know a Miracle, still can’t bring myself to call her by her name. It feels really uncomfortable.
If you want an unusual name have a look back through your family history. There are two Decimas in DH family, I thought it sounded rather beautiful.
“ In Roman mythology, Decima was one of the three Parcae, or often known in English as the Fates. Nona and Decima were responsible for birth, while Morta was charged with overseeing death. They distributed to mankind all the good and bad things in life, and even Jupiter had to bend to their will.”

It's very rude not to call someone by their name

Angrymum22 · 11/03/2022 14:08

Also know a Nona.

User839516 · 11/03/2022 14:08

None! Honestly oh my God I can’t cope with these threads 😂😂

September29th · 11/03/2022 14:10

Clementine, if you are looking for a fruit name? (Has been used before though, historically).

I personally don't like this one, but Oakley?

MinglingFlamingo · 11/03/2022 14:10

Venus- quite like I love Greek& Roman goddess names. Venus Williams

Ember - meh everyone will think you meant Amber and she'll have to correct everyone and their dog

The other two are awful I'm afraid

ValkyrieVik · 11/03/2022 14:10

Apricot Jean!! 😂

Gizacluethen · 11/03/2022 14:11

I like Apricot for a child but you've got to remember she's going to be an adult who wants a good job.

I like Story and Ember. I can imagine what those women are like

AmoozedBooze · 11/03/2022 14:11

@Spaghetti0h What about Cerise? It’s French for cherry

MurmuratingStarling · 11/03/2022 14:11

@SleepingStandingUp

Ember but agree she'll constantly be correcting for Amber. Story, Apricot and Venus just don't do it for me.
THIS. ^ I know a young woman (19) called Amaleigh ... (pronounced Amma-Lee.) Not the worst name in the world, but almost everyone - even half of her extended family, neighbours, some colleagues, (and most people she doesn't know,) call her EMILY ..
MinglingFlamingo · 11/03/2022 14:12

@RobinBlackbird

Saga instead of story maybe. But that's only because I watched The Bridge. I would go with Jean. I'd say anything but apricot.
Not Saga that's a club for the over 50s
Laniania · 11/03/2022 14:14

Love Story and Ember, not keen on Venus (tough name for a teenager especially on a bad hair day!) Apricot - Ape - Cot - tough to make that one work.

People being rude about names like Miracle are just so culturally narrow -minded, I live in Nigeria and know people and friend's children called Miracle, Promise, Gracious, Noble - I think they're lovely. It's not silly just because it doesn't fall within your immediate frame of reference.

I know. But not as bad as the Clamidia one of my DSis friends has to deal with. I also had to deal with a Melaena, anyone who is familiar with this word will understand how inappropriate it is as a girls name.
TristramBrandy · 11/03/2022 14:14

@SpinsForGin

My DS could never say Apricot.... he always says Apricock so that would be a no from me ( it's also not a name)
Apricock is lovely. So Unusual. Clitoris is gorgeous too
spicedsoup · 11/03/2022 14:14

I realise this has got a bit busy, but just thought I’d say that I didn’t think these names were so wild. The only one that really stands out for me is Apricot, I think it’s because I find it a bit harder to say so it doesn’t flow as easily as the others!

Surprised myself in fact by thinking Story sounds nice (haven’t heard of it used as a name before), followed by Ember. Other less common names have cropped up as suggestions that also sound nice.

Bullies will bully regardless. I have an incredibly common, of-its-time name and other kids still managed to invent rhymes to go with it Hmm

I work in a professional field, formal environment, I don’t imagine raising an eyebrow if I had a colleague called Story or Ember. I’ve had colleagues with all manner of different names.

MurmuratingStarling · 11/03/2022 14:15

@Angrymum22

Nope.
HereBdragons · 11/03/2022 14:16

Ember is fine. Venus is a bit of a burden (imagine how much bother it will be as a teen to be named after the goddess of love). The others are not really very name like in my opinion.

CyranoCyrano · 11/03/2022 14:16

How about ‘novel’ or ‘epitath’ or ‘banana’ or ‘pineapple’ if you are just picking random words for names! Poor child 😂

tearsforfears72 · 11/03/2022 14:16

Apricot and Story are not names and indicate you’ll view your child as a toy/possession rather than a real human who will grow up to be an adult. Imagine if it was you who had to introduce yourself at work as ‘Apricot’. Please don’t humiliate your daughter in this way.

MrsEricBana · 11/03/2022 14:17

Late to the party here but Cherry, Clementine and Jean are jumping out here.
Both my dc are never called their birth certificate names even though both names are perfectly standard names, so I think go for what you like (as long as it's not Apricot obv Wink)

MurmuratingStarling · 11/03/2022 14:17

amusedbush · 11/03/2022 14:18

I'm sorry to poop on your party but my maiden name was Cherry and the jokes are endless. "Pop your cherry" and "cherry helmet" were two enduring ones at school. Then when I started working, people who phoned up would tell me that my name made me sound like a drag act or a stripper. When I was 18, a middle-aged man I had never met saw my name in the internal directory and actually searched the building to find my desk and tell me my name sounded like a porn star.

It's not worth the jokes and sniggering when people hear the name.

Subbaxeo · 11/03/2022 14:18

Sorry but Ember just makes me think of the dregs of a fire! Apricot is a bedroom wall colour. Your child will get dreadfully teased with names like that. How about Amber? That’s nice without people going What??

EthelTheAardvark · 11/03/2022 14:19

There are far too many dodgy porn connotations with Venus to use that name for your child.

Dreamingof3 · 11/03/2022 14:19

@spaghetti0h I see where you're coming from with Apricot/peaches but it just doesn't sound right to me.

I really like Ember and Story. I know an Astoria who gets called Story for short so that could be an option?
