Venus, Story, Ember or Apricot?
I've narrowed my name list down to these.
I want something a little different to the top 20 names if possible.
Middle name would be Jean.
Which is your favourite in order please or what do you think?
Tysm for the help x

From the ones you've mentioned so far

Astoria (NN Story) - Love it. (Could also do Astor). Not as keen on Story on its own, and I think Astoria gives more range and sounds more like a proper name.

Apricot - I don't think it works. I don't know why it doesn't. Clementine is a lovely name and Apricot is not so different - but nonetheless, somehow it just sounds bizarre. I don't think that you're helped by Celebs going for Peaches or Apple because I think most people think they're being silly and put this in the same category.

Ember - Quite like this. It definitely feels like a name. She might get Amber a lot, but I don't think that's a catastrophe. NN Em or Emmie is nice. Out there but not ludicrous.

Venus - Classic. Greek God. Venus Williams. Not sure why everyone is getting their knickers in a twist on this when Serena (Williams) is quite a popular MN choice. Anyway. It's a real name. The most famous holders of it are positive connotations, if you like it, go for it. (Personally I find the sound of Venus a bit harsh, but that's just my preferences so irrelevant).

Cherry - absolutely fine, real name. It's not my favourite in the world but I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Sailor - you mentioned this later and I'm not keen. The only association I get is Sailor Moon. Nicknames are tricky. It's my least fave of the bunch.

Meadow - I think you also mentioned this. It's probably fine, but a bit hippy / wishy washy for me rather than cool.

Ignore all the bullying stuff. IME the people being bullied will be bullied irrespective of their name.

There was a kid I knew as a child who was called Ben and everyone called him Bend Over. There was a Tim-Nice-But-Dim too.

Equally I know a Peregrine who sailed through unscathed. Any name can prompt awful nicknames, but having an out there name doesn't make someone any more or less likely to be bullied

TeaNCupcakes · 11/03/2022 13:53

Seriously Hmm none

BeanyBops · 11/03/2022 13:53

Story is beautiful and I like ember a lot too. But you've got to have a pretty last name to pull it off! Story Jones or Story Davies sounds crap. Story D'agostino, Story Everett, Story McLellan - all beautiful (haha just picked those last names from the local paper!)

whirlyhead · 11/03/2022 13:54

My mother gave me a really unusual name and I've never met anyone else with it. I hate my name and could murder my mother for giving me it. My rule of thumb would be - could they be president/PM with a name like that, or would it be impossible to take them seriously because their name is so daft/fluffy.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/03/2022 13:54
@Waxonwaxoff0 yes I'm half Korean x
Ah OK. I'd look at that then rather than the other names!

Pastnowfuture · 11/03/2022 13:54

I like Story. I also really like Sage which someone suggested. No idea if it's popular but what about Primrose?

I don't like Venus but it's because it makes me think of shaving commercial.

There's some kids in my little boy's class with super unusual names. He doesn't bat an eyelid as unusual is usual now if that makes sense?

I also like Jean as a first name. Maybe with a longer, fancier middle name.

Fernandina · 11/03/2022 13:54

The only one of those four that isn't utterly ridiculous is Ember.

MurmuratingStarling · 11/03/2022 13:55

@FrappuccinoLight

Are you sure this isn’t a joke?

Life is hard enough as a girl with all the friendship group and insecurity issues that tend to occur especially when they hit teen years, that it could be seen to be unfair to saddle her with a name that would make her a target too. These are attention seeking names but not really in a good way. Only offspring of celebrities tend to be able to get away with these types of names since they move in circles of similarly named children. She would just be ridiculed in a suburban primary school of Isabels, Georgias, Freyas and Emilys, and grow to resent you for it.

Having said that, Cherry is a very pretty name. So is Jean. Cherry Jean is lovely.

Cherry Jean?! LMFAO! Grin
SleepingStandingUp · 11/03/2022 13:55

Ember but agree she'll constantly be correcting for Amber. Story, Apricot and Venus just don't do it for me.

balalake · 11/03/2022 13:55

Venus is the only one I would consider. The others I would hope a registrar of births could reject.

Kite22 · 11/03/2022 13:56

@Spaghetti0h

A handful of people have been particularly unkind! Thank you to everyone whose been gentle. I am betting all you nasties are double my age or more? ☠😑 I've run the names past my friends now & the only one they've thought is out there was Apricot
Well, I don't know how old you are, but I've just checked in with the 23 yr old next to me, and she thinks they are all ridiculous.

In your opinion

Yes, IMO, but there are 372 posts on this thread as I type, allowing for several being from you, OP, and a few others who have posted more than once, that is STILL a very high % of a lot of people who are telling you the same thing.

Lilaclavenders · 11/03/2022 13:58

Not Apricot. I know someone who was named after a fruit

Clementine, Apple, Cherry, Peaches, Olive are all used as girls names. Apricot isn't that different imo.

FurryBandito · 11/03/2022 13:59

Ember is ok. The Apricot and Story sound very Kardashian . Venus a big name to have to live up to,.

garlictwist · 11/03/2022 13:59

Ember sounds like you are extremely posh and trying to say Amber.

Story is not a name.

Apricot is weird

Venus at an (absolute) push.

hedgehog17363 · 11/03/2022 14:00

They all just sound quite sexualised, tacky and wannabe Instagram influencer. I get that you want something different but it's just not a good idea in the long run if you want to give your kid a chance.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 11/03/2022 14:00

Amber would be fine, the others just don't

Trinacham · 11/03/2022 14:00

Ember would be my choice out of those

2021s · 11/03/2022 14:03

Use Jean first then one of those quirky choices as her middle name
Jeanie is a cute girls name and Jean is a fabulous adults name.

Spacemonkey2016 · 11/03/2022 14:03

I know this sounds terribly mean, but I think they're all awful. But, each to their own! I would totally veto Apricot and Venus and choose Story or Ember. Like PP, would think Ember would get mistaken for Amber and perhaps Tori for Story.

MarthaJonesPhone · 11/03/2022 14:03

I really like Ember and I quite like Apricot. You mentioned Sailor, there is a name Sailah which is pronounced the same.

Cherrysherbet · 11/03/2022 14:05

All cute for a pet……not for a person, sorry.

My daughter has a girl in her class with a VERY unusual name, and people (adults) can be unkind when they mention her. For example, snigger or raise eyebrows etc…. Do you really want your child going through life being singled out because of the name you give her?

I think it’s unkind. Naming a person is a huge responsibility.

TheKeatingFive · 11/03/2022 14:06

I like Ember. I also quite like Apricot and would like it a lot more if there was a more grown up sounding short you could use for it. But I can't think of any.

Catabogus · 11/03/2022 14:06

I know an American woman called Storey. It suits her and I don’t think anyone has given her any grief for it.

I’d draw the line at Apricot though!

DidntReallyKnowHer · 11/03/2022 14:06

Venus Pluto
Ember. Charcoal
Story. ---- Riddle
Apricot Kiwi

JadeSeahorse · 11/03/2022 14:06

Story is gorgeous IMO! ♥️
