Jane, Jean or Joan

Which would you choose, and why?

Joan is very 1950s, like Joan in MadMen. Jean to me has a 60s surfer vibe, she could be called Jeannie. Very cool and cute.

Jane is so dull.

Joan or Jean - both lovely.

Figures for England and Wales 2020 (for girls, as Jean can also be used for boys)

I don't know how you can have a strong opinion about them, they're basically the same name.

But my preference would be 1st Jean, 2nd Joan, 3rd Jane

Joanie is cute and Joan on its own is a super strong name for a girl.

Having said that, I prefer Jeannie and Joanie to Janey.

I really don't like Jayne

Don't like the other two but it's probably because they remind me of people I don't like.

Prefer Joanne, Jennifer, Jade, June, and Juliet

I think Jane is a bit twee and Jean isn't old enough for granny chic but too old for pizazz.

Joan is the coolest by miles.

As pp have said, Jane is classic and classy.
Joan and Jean are dated imo.

I thought this was going to be a Chalet School thread — I think Joey Bettany pretends she’s going to call her triplets Jane, Joan and Jean (when she’s not calling them One, Two and Three…) 😀

I reckon Jean. Always has a French flavour (thus chic and cool). But Joan is a contender.
I know one teen Jane and her name seems very fresh and unusual amongst her peers, it's an underused but still classic name. Not Jayne though, that's still a bit of a middle aged women's name (my peers!)

I'm partial to Joanna.

I like them all, but love Joan the best. First, rather superficially it just sounds cool, but also it is a warrior name and who wouldn’t want that for their girl?

I also like Jane and think it is under used - but always has slightly sad connotations for me. I think it may be because of lady Jane Grey…

Jean sounds to me more like an earlier 20th century name (like Wendy), nothing wrong with that but I personally love names with a bit of history behind them.

Joan, I have known a few Joan’s over the years, they have always been lovely people.

I like Joannie

Jayne with a Y just like mine!

They’re all awful but I’d go with Jean if I had to choose one.
