Which would you choose, and why?

Jean sounds the nicest to me

Takeitonthechin · 02/03/2022 21:25

Jayne

I think I’m going to be the only voice for JOAN! I really like this name - it’s historic (Joan of..) and the others are boring - Jane (plain obs), Jean (fifties schoolgirl in American soap). Joan is brave, intelligent and wise beyond her years ( although I’m probably influenced too much by the completely inaccurate portrayal of Joan of Arc in films so…)

jackstini · 02/03/2022 23:27

For first or middle name?
Any family connections?
Depends on other name and surname

I like Jane best but dsis has as middle name and not keen. Maybe Jayne

Joan - I know some lovely Joan's so has good connotations

Jean - ok. I know a Jeanne too

JellybabyGina87 · 02/03/2022 23:31

Jean and Joan are ok if she's born a 75 year old woman. Jane is OK but boring.

OldMillenial · 02/03/2022 23:36

I love Jean/Jeannie. Don’t like Joan or Jane.

Bluebellbike · 03/03/2022 00:16

I prefer June to any of them.

Josette77 · 03/03/2022 00:25

I love Jean and Jane. Jean is very cool.

greenteafiend · 03/03/2022 01:01

I love Jean. Sounds very chic.

Jane is OK. I can't quite love Joan--makes me think of an old lady with a horsy face.

Sportslady44 · 14/03/2022 13:49

jane for sure, you can use janey as well.

The others are old fashioned.

Snowbell99 · 14/03/2022 14:02

Some time ago I would have said Jane (or June if that had been an option).

But I feel like the hipster crowd got to Jane and June. Jimmy Kimmel has a Jane. He's not so hipster but I feel like many many hipsters consider Jane (and even more often June) and it always shows up in threads. But they usually end up using June and especially Juno or Juniper instead.

So Jane and June are fine but tend to annoy me a bit. Not as much as Juno (hideous mythological character) and Juniper (ugly plant and sounds like saying Jennifer with a mouth full of food) do though.

I'd pick Jean. It's old Hollywood 1920s glamour. Joan is fine too.

HeadlessGummyBears · 15/03/2022 18:56

All three are fab!

But order of preference would be Jean, Jane and then Joan. I also like Joanna and Joanne.

TatianaBis · 15/03/2022 19:18

There were loads of mums called Jeans in the 70s. It's not been out long enough for a come back.

Joan is the previous generation - so redolent of 40s glamour.

Can't bear Jane.

From a class perspective - Jean is very working class, Joan upper middle, and Jane is classless.

maeveiscurious · 15/03/2022 19:24

I knew a Joan and Kitty, they have both passed now. Joan was a classy elegant forthright woman. Kitty was just naughty at 80.

Joan is great name

MyLifeNow20 · 15/03/2022 23:07

My DD is Georgina but nn Genie, my Nan recently passed away and her name was Jeanne. Its not the same spelling but makes me think of her

Alrightqueenie · 16/03/2022 05:31

I'd go for the French version of Jean which is Jeanne, pronounced with a soft J and Anne instead of ean ending:
Jeanne pronunciation

soulinablackberrypie · 16/03/2022 11:29

I have a very soft spot for Jane and would love to see it revived. Jean and Joan still feel a bit "my mum's generation" to me (my mum would have been 87 this year) and I can't really imagine them on a modern baby. I do like Joanna too.

ivykaty44 · 16/03/2022 11:38

Jane - it’s served me very well, simple & classic

Jean would be my next choice as Jeannie is lovely

Joan my last choice, sweet name

Nelliephant1 · 16/03/2022 11:40

Jane if any. My aunt is Joan and it's not a great name day to day. She's always hated it.

Degreeincodology · 16/03/2022 13:38

I really dislike Joan. Jane is pretty.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 16/03/2022 15:15

Jane - fine but boring

Jean - like it. Has a bit of old Hollywood glam.

Joan - there's a line in one of Shakespeare's plays which goes 'greasy Joan doth keel the pot'. And that's what Joan reminds me of.

Although I do like Joanie/Joni.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 16/03/2022 23:43

I absolutely love Jane
Classic, simple (not boring/plain) and pretty. Love it

LemonsLimes · 17/03/2022 15:09

I like all of them. I'd probably go for Jane as Jean and Joan are cool but I'd go for the "safer" option

Pemba · 17/03/2022 16:38

I'd say 1.Jane, simple and classy. Jane Seymour, Lady Jane Grey, Jane Austen, Jane Eyre. Moving onto cool sixties chicks like Jane Asher, Jane Berkin, Jane Fonda. I was at school with several Janes. A bit plain though, well they all are.

2.Jean. Also has a bit of a sixties chick vibe (Jean Shrimpton?) Spelt the same as the common French male name Jean, although pronunciation completely different of course. Might cause a problem if living in France.

  1. Joan. Seems to belong to an earlier generation somehow. Very matronly. Can only think of Joan Crawford who apparently wasn't very nice.

Like a pp said, I really like Joanna. But probably short plain names like those above will come in fashion again.

Andacherryonthetop · 17/03/2022 22:06

Jeanie (not Jean though)
