Brother in law being a prick about name

Fezcoh · 28/02/2022 12:02

My brother in law is being a total arsehole about the name we chose for DS, every time he says it he pulls a face and says it cringes him to say, when we first told him the name he said he refuses to call him it and will just call him Sam, which isn't remotely similar and he has a few instances said things like "Sammy boy' and it's really hurtful to be honest he won't say his actual mame without pulling a face and it just seems to be constant jokes and rudeness, calling him the American dream etc. It's not an offensive name at all, it's Brody, and I don't think it warrants this strong a reaction. Yes it is a little bit American, also has Scottish connections, yes we are English. I'm just starting to get a complex about it now, I know not everyone will like a name but to be some outwardly rude?

Start referring to him as "Uncle Prick" to his face?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 28/02/2022 12:04

Tell him in no uncertain terms that he is being a dick and very disrespectful. If he can't use the name then he doesn't get to see your DS.

AndAsIfByMagic · 28/02/2022 12:06

He thinks you've chosen an awful name for your DS. Tell him he's made his point and now is the time to shut up about it.

Trisolaris · 28/02/2022 12:06

Yep, clearly you can choose to call him whatever name you want as he’s happy to pick his own name for your son so just rename him back until he gets the message.

Sfumato · 28/02/2022 12:07

Call him Uncle Senile Cuntychops every time he pulls a face or calls your baby the wrong name?

youreabeluga · 28/02/2022 12:08

Brody is a great name! How old is DS? We had this too. My Grandad, my parents, brother-in-law all made it clear they didn't like it and then my parents made a weird statement later about how "they weren't sure at first but it really suits him doesn't it?" as if they'd quietly and politely kept their disgust to themselves, except they really hadn't Hmm urgh writing this is making me remember it and feel zero guilt for not making much effort with them these days. ANYWAY just wanted to say you're not alone, people are so bloody rude, Brody is a lovely name so it's their problem not yours, and they will get over it soon enough and hopefully be embarrassed enough to at least make a weird excuse like mine did. Please try not to let it bother you, although I know that is easier said than done.

ICouldBeAnyone · 28/02/2022 12:08

DGM called my sibling a different name for several months because she didn’t like their chosen name. She got over it.

Baffling that people think they can ignore your chosen name and make their own up.

Congratulations on your baby boy. Ignore your BIL.

GrendelsGrandma · 28/02/2022 12:14

About time you re-christened your BIL. I wouldn't go for a rude name, eg if he's Uncle Chris now call him Uncle Josh because you like the name more.

Stroopwaffle5000 · 28/02/2022 12:16

Aww I love the name Brody! It was on my list of boys names!

I personally wouldn't waste my breath on him anymore and would make it quite clear that I think he's a massive twat!!!

NoSquirrels · 28/02/2022 12:17

This can’t be an isolated incidence of arsehole behaviour from him? So you can ignore him because he’s an idiot - and a rude idiot at that.

If he’s your DH’s brother get him and his family to tell him to STFU. If it’s your sister’s husband tell your sister to tell him to STFU.

Don’t doubt yourself.

Riseholme · 28/02/2022 12:23

Definitely turn the tables.
Call him Uncle Grinch or Uncle Rudy because he’s a rude man.
There’s nothing wrong with Brody. It’s a great name.

Sfumato · 28/02/2022 12:27

All four of our parents were horrified at the name we gave DS, because it was unusual. We suggested they kept their opinions strictly to themselves and look back with satisfaction on the fact that they had been able to choose to give their nine children the beigest names in creation.

IVflytrap · 28/02/2022 12:38

@Sfumato "beigest names" Grin. That was a great response to your parents.

OP, Brody is a nice name. Not sure where he's getting the idea that it's American from (not that there's anything wrong with American names) but it's a Scottish name? I know that and I have no links to Scotland.

I would stop seeing him, tbh. It's completely out of order to be so disrespectful to you and you OH, not to mention your DC.

irishfarmer · 28/02/2022 12:40

That is so rude. Tell him to get over himself and that he will confuse the child. Or as PPs suggested start calling him something different. He thinks he is being funny/ the big man. He is being an idiot.

midsomermurderess · 28/02/2022 12:45

Tell him to grow up or dick off. Who behaves like that?

ElliotGoss · 28/02/2022 12:47

Brody is a lovely name. Is there any reason you need to see your BIL or can you avoid him for a few months?

Ohmybod · 28/02/2022 12:47

Get your DP to ask him if he realises what an immature arse he is being and that you both find it really embarrassing to the extent that if he insists on keeping it up, you won’t be seeing him much.

HelenWick · 28/02/2022 12:55

Call him the wrong name loudly and repeatedly and laugh at him. Tell him he has a stupid hairstyle that makes you cringe and put a hat on his head whenever he is nearby. When he says anything smirk and giggle and refuse to say why. Freak the fucker out and take his power.

SaveFerris1 · 28/02/2022 13:01

I have a Brodie, and feel it’s a totally awesome name! I agree with calling him Uncle Cunty-chops!

Odile13 · 28/02/2022 13:08

BIL is being horrible. I think your DH should talk to him privately about it.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the name you’ve picked, but even if there was, it’s none of your BILs business.

Bluelillies · 28/02/2022 13:18

I called my son brody
I fucking loved it (still do)
My dad hated it-he got told that he’s granddad not dad so he didn’t get a say in it-he had his chance with his own 4 children-this is his grandchild’s name and if he didn’t like it,then tough
He wound his neck in and he won’t admit to it ,he got over it and used to it

I’d tell your bil to do the same

I had a friend who called her daughters two of the blandest names I’ve ever heard
All she got from me was ‘oh,how lovely-you’ve got great taste!what a beautiful baby!’ (She had them 18 months apart

Anyone else can fuck off

Polyethyl · 28/02/2022 13:21

A chum lumbered her child with a terrible name. I said " that's a terrible name, I'm going to use your child's middle name instead."
No dramas.

Limegreentangerine · 28/02/2022 13:22

Brody was on my list room, but we adopted a cat just before called Brody! But still Great name!

ofwarren · 28/02/2022 13:24

He's being pathetic. It's a perfectly normal name.

Gilly12345 · 28/02/2022 13:26

BIL is awful and I would have to ignore him and not have him in my life as he is disrespectful with your name choice.

If this is not possible I would feel the need to call him Uncle Dickhead if he continues with the face pulling expressions and comments.
