Brother in law being a prick about name

Fezcoh · 28/02/2022 12:02

My brother in law is being a total arsehole about the name we chose for DS, every time he says it he pulls a face and says it cringes him to say, when we first told him the name he said he refuses to call him it and will just call him Sam, which isn't remotely similar and he has a few instances said things like "Sammy boy' and it's really hurtful to be honest he won't say his actual mame without pulling a face and it just seems to be constant jokes and rudeness, calling him the American dream etc. It's not an offensive name at all, it's Brody, and I don't think it warrants this strong a reaction. Yes it is a little bit American, also has Scottish connections, yes we are English. I'm just starting to get a complex about it now, I know not everyone will like a name but to be some outwardly rude?

@Polyethyl

A chum lumbered her child with a terrible name. I said " that's a terrible name, I'm going to use your child's middle name instead." No dramas.
You're entitled to your opinion on the name, but refusing to use a child's actual name because you don't like it is a complete dick move and makes you look rude and pathetic. You'd be no friend of mine with behaviour like that.

Same for the BIL in this situation really. Both need to grow up.

Brody is a lovely name Smile

Lollypop701 · 28/02/2022 13:37

Get dh to tell bil that he doesn’t have to like it but unless he uses it nicely then he won’t be seeing any of you

TreatTrimTame · 28/02/2022 13:41

Your BIL is being rude and its not acceptable. I would, loudly and publicly, inform him hes made his opinion clear and to please stop mocking his baby nephew as its getting a bit boring now and could he maybe think of something new.

Course you did.
PamelaDoov · 28/02/2022 13:50

Brody is my sons middle name, I love it. But regardless of whether it’s a nice name or not, your BIL is being a dick and you need to keep calling him out on it until he stops.

HaveringWavering · 28/02/2022 13:51

Brody/Brodie is a Scottish surname, it’s not a common first name in Scotland so maybe he’s getting “American” from the concept of surname-as-first-name which is popular there. It makes me think of Homeland, can’t remember if that was the character’s first name or surname.

It’s a perfectly nice name, your husband needs to put his asshole brother back in his box.

I’m in Scotland, there’s lots of Brodie’s going about here. 2 in my sons class of 19 students

Brody is a lovely name! Ignore him / change your BIL name and call him your choice repeatedly.

oakleaffy · 28/02/2022 14:09

@Riseholme

Definitely turn the tables. Call him Uncle Grinch or Uncle Rudy because he’s a rude man. There’s nothing wrong with Brody. It’s a great name.
Uncle Rudi!

Yes, @Fezcoh, call him ''Uncle Rude-ey''.

Wbeezer · 28/02/2022 14:12

I know a 25 year old Brodie (I'm in Scotland). It seems to be quite a middle class name up here (but i live in quite a middle class bubble so i could be completely wrong about that).

SisterRuth · 28/02/2022 14:17

Just call him Uncle Wanker til he gets the message.

MrsTrumpton · 28/02/2022 14:19

Polyethyl Of course you did. Meanwhile last night I flew to Mars and back on a silver-winged unicorn. Hmm

cushioncovers · 28/02/2022 14:20

You or your Dh or both of you are going to have to tell him to shut the fuck up. Just do it and get it over with, don't let him ruin anymore of your excitement over the arrival of your baby.

I'm in Scotland, I know at least 6 Brodies ages between 3 - 15.
Riverlee · 28/02/2022 14:25

Every time he calls Brody Sam, either correct him, or ignore him, until he uses Ds’s proper name.

Or maybe have zero tolerance. Ie, after first time, correct him, second time warn him he’s being rude, and third time ask him to leave as he’s being so rude .

Interesting @saveFerris1. I just checked the official list for 2020 and it’s 17 overall with the ie spelling and 98 with the Y.

It was joint top in Falkirk and Shetland!

I admit my knowledge is a bit out of date as it’s a while since I moved away.

WhereYouLeftIt · 28/02/2022 14:36

What opportunities does your BIL have to pull this look-at-me-look-at-me stunt? If he's visiting your house, throw him out immediately. Better still, never invite him. If it's at his house, walk out immediately. If it's at, say, MIL's house, also walk out immediately. Every. Single. Time.

At the moment, his rudeness is your problem. It's time to make it his.

Blubells · 28/02/2022 14:36

Call him Uncle Rudy - he's being very rude!

stripeyflowers · 28/02/2022 15:00

Idiot man not worth worrying about.

MemoryLikeASieve1 · 28/02/2022 15:01

My husband is called Brody!
He has never has anyone comment on his name, obviously I am bias but I love the name!

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 28/02/2022 15:04

Your ds needs an entire wardrobe of personalised outfits..
And a blanket.
And a T shirt for bil.

I am Brody's uncle.

dottydodah · 28/02/2022 15:12

What on earth gives people the right to be judge/jury on others peoples names ? Tell BIL to grow up .I have friends children whose name I wouldnt have chosen .However I am an adult and pass no comment! Nothing to do with me!

GeorgiaGirl52 · 28/02/2022 15:18

Brody is a fine name but not really American.
