Evelyn for boy?

Zephyrswing · 24/01/2022 15:32

Any thoughts please?

His brothers are Albert, Arthur, Edward, and Ernest. I know— I know— too much a and e. I didn’t pick ‘Evelyn’ because there’s an e, but I just like the name. Does the name go well with his siblings’. Any names suggestion?

Opinions and suggestions are appreciated! Thank you in advance.

I think Stanley would go well with your other names, not A or E though!

Fl0w3ry · 24/01/2022 17:14

I don’t like Evelyn for a boy af all. I knew a man called Emlyn once. It has a similar sound. Much prefer Emlyn.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/01/2022 17:16

it reminds me of Evelyn Waugh who was an arse- even if he did write Brideshead.

I do like a lot of unisex names but Evelyn sounds so feminine to me. I just think of a girl when I hear it.

james85 · 24/01/2022 17:19

Evelyn and Hilary are now girls names.
Do you know the Johnny Cash song 'A Boy named Sue'
He became a very hard fighter!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 24/01/2022 17:24

No not for a boy!

Because people had taken the piss out of him so much we hasten to add.

The lesson? He’d name his own son Bill or George - any damn thing but Sue!

Binthescales · 24/01/2022 17:27

@erinaceus

Does noone else think of Ted Evelyn Mosby? Must just be me then.

I think it is a lovely name, but others are right and the assumption will be that he is female.

Evan or Ewan?

YES!

It’s also in the same vane as Chandler MURIEL Bing. Some names should die. The boys name Evelyn, I feel unfortunately falls into this category.

Molly2008 · 24/01/2022 17:28

How about Everett

Hoowhoowho · 24/01/2022 17:41

I like it but how about Emlyn as an alternative. Definite boys name, means bright circle

miltonj · 24/01/2022 17:47

No, I wouldn't.

TheHoptimist · 24/01/2022 17:48

2 of my grandparents were called Evelyn- 1 Male - 1 female. Born in 1916 if that helps (laughed at 100 year cycle above)

They both hated it and used their middle names.

TheHoptimist · 24/01/2022 17:49

Or professional joker from Question of Sport- depends on your cultural reference

My female granny was born in 1916 as Evelyn
Tal45 · 24/01/2022 17:52

It's a girls name now, calling a boy it would just be cruel.

james85 · 24/01/2022 17:53

One of John Wayne's name is Marion

TedsaidFred · 24/01/2022 18:03

@bitchinofhitchen

No. It's too overused for girls now. It'll look like you wanted a girl but got a boy
This. Plus on paper it will look like you did get a girl. I appreciate that Evelyn has been used for many men but in recent times it is totally a girl's name and among his peers he will be mocked.
StrawberrySanta · 24/01/2022 18:07

It's not a bad name but it's definitely known as a girl's name, and with 4 brothers I don't think he'd thank you for giving him a 'girls' name. Plus to outsiders it will look like you wanted a girl

Starbonnet123 · 24/01/2022 18:08

That was my grandads name , he was called Evelyn Kay named after field marshal Sir Evelyn Wood .
My great grandma wrote to Evelyn wood to tell him and received a postcard with him in full military uniform , the postcard is still in the family somewhere .
I think it's a lovely name that matches his brothers 😍

autienotnaughty · 24/01/2022 18:13

Whilst it's a great name because it's a popular girls name I'd be concerned about teasing. What about Alfred or Archibald ? Or start anew letter and go something like William ?

LetsGoParty · 24/01/2022 18:32

@Bluebells examples are all dead people so not sure they are the best examples.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/01/2022 19:07

God, you really can't OP - it's a nice name, but it's now only seen as a (very popular) girl's name. Every single person who sees his name will think he's a girl. This will be very annoying for him, and (while most of the 'he'll be bullied for that' comments on here are total bullshit) he really will likely be bullied for it.

Your current boys made me think Rufus, Miles, Giles, Arnold, Patrick, Alec (Alexander), Francis, Charles, Thomas, Laurence and Andrew.

perimenofertility · 24/01/2022 19:28

I love the name Evelyn and would know it as a boys name as much as a girls name, but still I would worry about teasing from others who only know it as a girls name. Inevitably will be shortened to Eve or Lyn)
I love your other names too!
Could you extend your vowel collection? What about Ivan, Ivor, Oscar, Oakley?

GingerScallop · 24/01/2022 22:12

Aubergine is actually not a bad name. You'd have to be a posh boy though. Playing polo or croquet, no?

steppemum · 24/01/2022 22:16

I know that Evelyn is traditionally a boys name, but I have never understood why.
Both Eve and Lyn are uniquely female names, and Eve is so strongly female as in the origin or the female species type name that it is extraordinary to me that it was ever a boys name.

I think nowadays it has firmly switched to a femal name, quite rightly.

I think it is a pretty unfair name to give a boy.
