Evelyn for boy?

Zephyrswing · 24/01/2022 15:32

Any thoughts please?

His brothers are Albert, Arthur, Edward, and Ernest. I know— I know— too much a and e. I didn’t pick ‘Evelyn’ because there’s an e, but I just like the name. Does the name go well with his siblings’. Any names suggestion?

Opinions and suggestions are appreciated! Thank you in advance.

I wouldn't use Evelyn. It may be a male name too but it's too much a female name now.

I know that Evelyn is traditionally a boy’s name but it seems to have become a girls name now - so many little Evie’s around that I think people may assume he’s a girl…

CloudPop · 24/01/2022 16:29

He'll have to go early with announcing his pronouns to avoid confusion.

Edgar?

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/01/2022 16:31

I don't like Aubergine. Too fancy. I prefer the more no-nonsense Eggplant.

purplecorkheart · 24/01/2022 16:31

No, not for a boy. The majority of his peers will know it only as a girls name and it will lead to teasing

Skeumorph · 24/01/2022 16:32

Gosh no. I don't think that that one flies any more!

Surely the next two should have I names?

Isambard.

Santahasjoinedww · 24/01/2022 16:33

Eggy is a fab nn!!

Byebyeboris · 24/01/2022 16:34

It’s a fantastic name for a boy. Said no one ever. Unless you want him to spend his life getting the piss taken out of him.

Benjispruce5 · 24/01/2022 16:35

It’s a girl’s name so no. Why would you do that to your child? He’ll have a lifetime of having to explain his name.

Buddhabowl · 24/01/2022 16:36

I really wouldn't. It's such a popular girls name, he would be made fun of. His brothers all have very normal boys names so he will wish he had one of those.

SummaLuvin · 24/01/2022 16:37

I don't doubt it has a history of being a boys name, but I (like most people) will automatically assume it's a girl with that name. Not the worst thing in the world, but could be annoying. I know men called Hilary and Erin. I have a name that is gender neutral but most assume I'm a man without any other information and I don't believe it has adversely impacted me in any way. However, I think @averythinline makes a great point about it seeming like gender disappointment and you had hoped for a girl, that would put me off more than anything else.

Definitely not, it screams ‘I was trying for a girl’

Binthescales · 24/01/2022 16:39

Personally I wouldn’t. It strikes me as very much boy named Sue.

The name Evelyn has mostly diverged into a girl’s name and he will spend his entire life being told ‘it’s a girls name.’ Even it’s diminutives Evie, Eve, Eva, Lyn are all girls names. I’m usually 100% for don’t name your child on what others would say but this is a massive no. In four years you’ll look back and think ‘what were we thinking?!’

There are dozens of classically beautiful A and E names that would be far more easy for him to live with.

Albert, Arthur, Edward, Ernest, and Isidore.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 24/01/2022 16:45

No.

ImInStealthMode · 24/01/2022 16:47

No. How about Evan, or Ansel?

PurplePansy05 · 24/01/2022 16:49

Definitely no to Evelyn.

Elijah, Elliot or Elias maybe?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/01/2022 16:51

He won't thank you for it.

whosaidtha · 24/01/2022 16:51

Giving him what is largely perceived to be a girls name may compound the idea that you only had a 5th because you wanted a girl. Whether that's the case or not it may make him think.

erinaceus · 24/01/2022 16:56

Does noone else think of Ted Evelyn Mosby? Must just be me then.

I think it is a lovely name, but others are right and the assumption will be that he is female.

Evan or Ewan?

Musmerian · 24/01/2022 16:58

How about Edmund or Edwin instead? I’ve never been a fan of unisex names and it reminds me of Evelyn Waugh who was an arse- even if he did write Brideshead.

lisaandalan · 24/01/2022 17:05

Not for a boy. It might also seem to him she hasn't been able to have a girl so given me a girls name. X

ISmellBurnings · 24/01/2022 17:06

Nope, it’s massively overused for a girl. He’ll just get teased and called Evie as someone else said. Don’t do it to him.

girljulian · 24/01/2022 17:09

I love Evelyn for a boy in theory, but as a girl called Julian, let's say my mother quickly got used to explaining that I was a girl before we went anywhere or I got a new teacher, and then would launch into a diatribe about how historically it's been used for girls as much as for boys. I know. It's true. And I love my name. But it's quite taxing having a name that's not so much unisex as generally assumed to belong to the opposite sex, and I can imagine it must be worse for boys.

Velvian · 24/01/2022 17:13

I'm an Evelyn Waugh fan, but no don't do it. It is likely to be awful for him.
