Evelyn for boy?

Zephyrswing · 24/01/2022 15:32

Any thoughts please?

His brothers are Albert, Arthur, Edward, and Ernest. I know— I know— too much a and e. I didn’t pick ‘Evelyn’ because there’s an e, but I just like the name. Does the name go well with his siblings’. Any names suggestion?

Opinions and suggestions are appreciated! Thank you in advance.

You can’t do that to a boy!! Poor wee thing would never live it down. Or he would grow up to be like my ex colleague Stacy, a bitter, argumentative man we can only think has been made that way by a lifetime of teasing about his name!

Incidentally, my 4 of my great uncles had the names of your 4 sons, the others were Fred, George and Ambrose.

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 24/01/2022 22:29

I like it a lot for a boy.

Ironically I dislike the feminine version as had a terrible boss of that name in my youth. But I think Evelyn for a boy/man is wonderful.

But overall I’m jealous of you having 5 lovely sons!

Marimaur · 25/01/2022 00:06

Enock/Enoch? Really?

ErrolTheDragon · 25/01/2022 00:18

Just about the only male Evelyn people have heard of is Waugh... and he was married to she-Evelyn.

ForgedInFire · 25/01/2022 00:24

Who cares about history- everyone he goes to school with will know thay Evelyn is currently considered a girls name. It is downright cruel to name a boy that. You might get a couple of pats on the back in baby groups for "knowing that it was originally a boys name" but your son will bear the brunt of bullying

ShmeevilWeevil · 25/01/2022 00:35

Sue!

Joystir59 · 25/01/2022 04:36

If you want him to be bullied

Ginandplatonic · 25/01/2022 05:13

I love the idea of Evelyn for a boy (but weirdly dislike it for a girl) BUT I agree with the pps who say you/he will get sick of the whole “your parents gave you a girl’s name because they wanted a girl” thing. (I have 4 boys and constantly get “were you trying for a girl?”

Zephyrswing · 25/01/2022 05:19

Wow! Surprisingly a long thread. Thank you everyone indeed!

It’s helped me a lot since it did restored my sanity 😂 that it does no good for DS at all. He will struggle with it one way or another. It also made me realise that my boy will think I actually want a girl after 4 sons, which is fortunately not true.

Thank you for talking some sense into me! (And the name suggestions as well.) Even though it’s a lovely name for a lot of nice he-or she-Evelyn, I need to rule it out, and consider some that you suggested.

I think I’ll go with safe names instead like Andrew or Alfred or else. I don’t want to start a new thread, so what do you think between Andrew v Alfred v August?

Or any suggestions that go well with his brothers’ names please?

I’m okay if there’re some good names with different initials, but I’m afraid the youngest might feel left out since his siblings’ names start with A or E. Any thoughts please?

Thank you so much!

@Ginandplatonic I feel you! I got that kind of question too. Flowers

Edwin?

Ginandplatonic · 25/01/2022 05:41

I like pp’s suggestion of Auberon.

Of your list Andrew is nice, Alfred feels too close to Albert and August feels more modern compared to your other names - how about Augustine?

If you’re up for branching out to a different vowel I like Ivo or Ivor.

foofooyeah · 25/01/2022 05:42

Alexander?
Alfred is nice but there seem to be loads of Alfie’s about at the moment

Buttermuffin · 25/01/2022 05:42

Aiden or Emerson

MiddleParking · 25/01/2022 05:44

I’d say whatever name you give him he’s going to have a lifetime of being called “Albert-Arthur-Edward-Ernest-oh for gods sake” if you’re anything like me as a mother!

I personally LOVE Evelyn for a boy and am not fussed about it for a girl as Evie is so ubiquitous, but clearly it’s not a goer. Tempting as Aubergine is, I’d call him Eric.

Ginandplatonic · 25/01/2022 05:44

@Zephyrswing people can be so rude and personal can’t they? See also “oh god, you poor thing, four boys” etc invariably said in front of my lovely little boys. Made me so sad for them.

JumperJump · 25/01/2022 05:53

Edwin
Everett
Edmund
Eric
Alexander
Abraham

Buttermuffin · 25/01/2022 05:55

Seth - not an A or E but I love that name.

AutomaticMoon · 25/01/2022 06:01

Emile (eh-mil) sounds nice too

BorderlineHappy · 25/01/2022 06:26

Good call as a mother of 5 sons welcome to the club.
I would go with A name
Andrew
Ambrose
Alistair

erinaceus · 25/01/2022 07:37

I think Andrew goes with the others.

Flutterflybutterby · 25/01/2022 09:28

A hard 'no' from me!

PattyPan · 25/01/2022 09:33

Of your three I like Andrew best - I find August a bit ugly, Gus even more so. Plus do you pronounce it like the month or the word?
And I think Alfred is a bit too similar to Albert.

Saisong · 25/01/2022 10:19

I like a PP suggestion of Ansel (like Ansel Adams) or maybe Anselm

lndnbrdge91 · 25/01/2022 10:48

another vote for Ambrose. It sits well with the names of your other boys but has its own uniqueness
