Evelyn for boy?

Zephyrswing · 24/01/2022 15:32

Any thoughts please?

His brothers are Albert, Arthur, Edward, and Ernest. I know— I know— too much a and e. I didn’t pick ‘Evelyn’ because there’s an e, but I just like the name. Does the name go well with his siblings’. Any names suggestion?

Opinions and suggestions are appreciated! Thank you in advance.

The existing names are very traditional. Solid as mahogany furniture. So if you want a match, stick to names found in 19th/Edwardian literature . Henry, William, George, James, John, Charles, Richard. That sort of thing... those are also all post-Norman conquest kings of England, which isn't a coincidence.

I’ve never met or heard of a boy called Evelyn so I’d personally find it an odd choice but it’s your baby and it seems it’s a unisex name. My sons name is celtic and was always used as a boys name but some people now use it for a girls name. I still find it a bit odd but that’s because I’m not used to it being used for both.

I like Alfred the most out of Andrew, Alfred and August but I think Andrew works best as Alfred and Albert both feel quite similar to me.

I was originally going to suggest Emlyn as an alternative to Evelyn.

Otherwise what about Alistair, Alexander, Nicholas, Dominic, Peter, James, Patrick, Francis, Richard, Jonathan, Michael, George, Matthew, Thomas or Lawrence as an alternative?

@steppemum

I know that Evelyn is traditionally a boys name, but I have never understood why. Both Eve and Lyn are uniquely female names, and Eve is so strongly female as in the origin or the female species type name that it is extraordinary to me that it was ever a boys name.

I think nowadays it has firmly switched to a femal name, quite rightly.

I think it is a pretty unfair name to give a boy.

I know 2 male Lyn(n)s

Not for a boy. What about Sidney or Stanley?

Kitkat151 · 25/01/2022 23:35

If it was not so common these days ( for girls) I would say ‘maybe’....but there’s baby Evelyns in every post delivery ward up and down the country these days.....so it a ‘no no’ for me....it will be a massive ball ache for him from the day he starts school.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/01/2022 23:36

How about Arnold?
Or Alexander nn Alec

Otherwise Andrew

I like Alfred, but too much with Albert already

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 25/01/2022 23:40

Child cruelty calling a boy Evelyn.

ODFOx · 26/01/2022 00:03

I think that you are right to think twice about Evelyn while it is so popular as a girls' name.

2 As and 2 Es already.
So you are looking for a classic masculine timeless name ideally with two syllables.
Richard
Philip
Rupert
Austin.

evilharpy · 26/01/2022 01:18

Aubrey? Although maybe that has the opposite problem in that it's traditionally a boy's name but recently has been used for girls.

SaticoyStreet · 26/01/2022 07:44

Not these days no. Not whilst it’s a top 20 girls name.

Joystir59 · 26/01/2022 07:50

I think Andrew is tainted as a name going forward due to Prince Andrew

Itonlytakesonetree · 26/01/2022 07:54

Glad you are off the idea!
Just to say, swap out Edward and those were my great uncles' names - ggm had 4 boys, the 4th was Gilbert.

Sunshine1235 · 26/01/2022 07:56

It’s a shame because it such a lovely name for a boy but I don’t think you can when there are so many girl Evelyns around. Aubergine is a very interesting suggestion, I’d also say no.

August is lovely. Everett? All your boys names are great, what fun to have 5! I always imagined myself with a hoard of little boys

LaChanticleer · 26/01/2022 08:16

I love Evelyn as a name, but I would say I've never heard it for a boy.

It’s always been a male name: as are Hilary , Jocelyn and Shirley. The transfer of these names to girls and women is the novelty.

Himawarigirl · 26/01/2022 08:24

I’d worry most people will assume he’s a girl. What about Ellery?

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 26/01/2022 08:29

I think Irving would go well with the boys' names you already have.

Houseofvelour · 26/01/2022 08:34

@Zephyrswing I think August is a gorgeous name!

Fatherliamdeliverance · 26/01/2022 08:34

What about Emlyn? that's really nice. I think Evelyn is thought of as a girl's name now. Maybe it shouldn't matter but I don't think he would thank you for it.

erinaceus · 26/01/2022 09:08

Eliot
Ethan
Oliver

Rockmehardplace · 26/01/2022 22:06

I vote Alistair.

And I LOVE the idea of 5 little boys! Boy mum here! (Tho sadly not if 5!)

Thirtytimesround · 26/01/2022 22:28

No. It’s generally understood to be a girl’s name, he’ll get teased.

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 26/01/2022 22:54

Alisdair
Aubrey (although think may also be unisex?)
Austin
Emmett
Emerson

Or my wildcard suggestion with out the a e sound but which I think could be good addition is the very lovely George Smile

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/01/2022 22:58

I think Evelyn is a beautiful name but I’m 58 and of a certain mindset.

If you love it too and are prepared to explain away certain modern perceptions (ie:,it’s a girl’s name 🙄, then go with it)
