Is the name Roy dated and sounded cute?

We are expecting a DS anytime now and I am having second thoughts on the name, Roy.

DH really likes the name but I am just worried that this name is dated and sounded cute?

OP posts:

It's so old fashioned it's on trending with all the other grandad names.
I would avoid Royston though, that isn't nice.

AutumnAlmanack · 15/10/2021 19:16

@SnowyPetals

Roy is 65 and has mates called Howard and Les.
What is wrong with being 65 or called Roy or Howard? Les I can understand!
Tibtab · 15/10/2021 19:26

Ha ha I take Royston back, it’s not even a name I
Particularly like 😂

KirstenBlest · 15/10/2021 19:31

I know a really nice Royston and a Roy, who is my lovely neighbour

NigellaSeed · 15/10/2021 19:40

Raymond waaaaay better

actiongirl1978 · 15/10/2021 19:43

Roy is my 90yr old neighbour.

Raymond is my uncle.

Neither name should be attached to a baby!

woodhill · 15/10/2021 19:51

Remember fast show
Caroline Aherne - didn't I say Roy

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 15/10/2021 19:54

but I am just worried that this name is dated and sounded cute?

Oddly worded question…

It is dated.

It’s not cute.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 15/10/2021 19:58

I like it- you’ve got to look at theses names in a new light, not attached to anyone in particular. So many of these type of names in schools now that it’s fashionable. Pretty cool to be honest

Idontlike · 15/10/2021 20:01

@actiongirl1978

Roy is my 90yr old neighbour.

Raymond is my uncle.

Neither name should be attached to a baby!

Both of those men were once a baby!

I like it op but then I have a cousin Roy (mid 40’s) & knew a Raymond in primary school so both names are familiar to me so just very normal.

Flowiththego · 15/10/2021 20:03

There was a horrible boy at my school called Roy so I never liked the name. But. I haven't thought of this name for years and actually rather like it. It's simple, unusual.

Flowiththego · 15/10/2021 20:06

The only problem would be if like me you can't say your r's he'd be Woy :)

Peggytheredhen · 15/10/2021 20:09

Well I have a cool friend called Roy. So I like it.

Vindo · 15/10/2021 20:21

Nope. Roy Cropper.

TertiusLydgate · 15/10/2021 20:24

Terrible name. I can’t think it was ever a good one, even when it wasn’t hideously dated.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 15/10/2021 20:28

Awful! I like Ray for a girl or a boy (it’s DD2’s middle name) but Roy is very different and has an unpleasant sound.

PurBal · 15/10/2021 20:29

I actually love this name. It reminds me of a dear family friend. Very jovial.

quinin · 15/10/2021 20:31

I really like it! Ray or Raymond is awful though.

Lockdownbear · 15/10/2021 20:35

Actually I wouldn't have considered it but I do like it.

I'd avoid Royston, it's a Scottish place. "Ton" is Scots ending for town. You'd be calling the kid Roys town!

Classica · 15/10/2021 20:39

Roy is a man who is active in his neighbourhood watch group, loves to potter in his shed, hopes all the kitchen appliances break down just so he can have the joy of getting his toolkit out to fix them. His wife is called Jan.

I don't think there's anything terrible about it, it's one inoffensive syllable, but I do prefer Ray.

Peggytheredhen · 15/10/2021 20:43

None of the Roys I know were even slightly Neighbourhood watchers!

cushioncovers · 15/10/2021 20:43

It's an awful name op

SammyScrounge · 15/10/2021 20:57

That was my Grandpa's name and he hated it. He said it was a pet dog's name and he had his father's name tattooed on his arm and said it was his.

Luckytattie · 15/10/2021 21:03

I would never think of a dog being called Roy!

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/10/2021 21:04

Definitely not cute. Makes me think of the 1970s.
