What names do you love but wouldn't use

I went for a very safe name for my son. But looking at him now he could pull off Rio which his dad wanted to call him. There were others I loved but felt unfair to saddle a child with

Shilo
Hudon
Shay
Franklyn
Carter
Lorenzo (we have strong northern accents and it would sound ridiculous)
Carey - due a come back
Tate
Ira
Silas

Thiago, no idea why but I absolutely love this name!

JapanJetplane · 12/10/2021 20:17

Artair - loved it, thought he’d forever be spelling it out, plus it’s a bit pretentious

Ottilie - so pretty but every third girl since 2014 has been called this so it’s a bit overdone

TinaYouFatLard · 12/10/2021 20:18

I love Clementine.

Firstbornunicorn · 12/10/2021 20:20

Mirren. Sounds daft with my surname, but I do like it.

Tianna476 · 12/10/2021 20:22

Tate and Franklyn are cool

ImInStealthMode · 12/10/2021 20:22

Evan. Reminds me of a wonderful friend. Sadly it's also part of my ex-husbands surname, so definitely not for my future son!

Cantstopthewaves · 12/10/2021 20:23

Lolita
Sonny

RosaBaby2 · 12/10/2021 20:25

I battled with my love for Ira but it just wouldn't work

magictoadstool · 12/10/2021 20:25

I have a chicken called Ottilie! And also Clarabel (which I love).

My names which I love but didn’t use are Heddy, Gretel, and Clotilde. More chickens I suppose.

Verbena87 · 12/10/2021 20:26

Swithun

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/10/2021 20:26

Ebony
Cindy
Whitney

inmyslippers · 12/10/2021 20:27

I love some of these. Thiago sounds very sauve. Lolita has been ruined now hasn't it? Shame as it's a lovely name.

How do you pronounce swithun?

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/10/2021 20:27

Carenza.

I had a boy . Then the menopause....

Buttons294749 · 12/10/2021 20:28

Judy - I'm not brave enough

StevieNix · 12/10/2021 20:28

Marigold (nickname Goldie) - husband said everyone would just think of rubber gloves and I didn’t want that! Still absolutely love it though!

ChrissyPlummer · 12/10/2021 20:31

My friend’s husband is called Thiago, they’re from South America though.

Lolita is not a lovely name, even without the obvious connotation, it means ‘sorrows’.

Silas brings back memories of the kids TV show from the 1980s or the serial killer in ‘Hollyoaks’.

2tired2bewitty · 12/10/2021 20:32

Mordecai, zero Jewish heritage but I really love the way it sounds

Beefmeupscotty · 12/10/2021 20:35

Elsa

I was pregnant with my daughter in 2013 and wanted to call her Elsa. DH vetoed it because his childhood friend's dog was called Elsa. Frozen came out later that year. I think I owe DH for saving DD from that connotation!

WildCherryBlossom · 12/10/2021 20:37

No, Lolita itself doesn't mean sorrows. It can be a diminutive of Dolores, which does mean sorrows or pains.

Too loaded to use though for an actual child though. Plenty of little Lolas around (which I do quite like but always think of The Kinks song)

That’ll teach me to rely on Wikipedia Grin. I also know of a few toddler Lolas…but also lots of dogs named Lola so I’d never personally use it for a person.
EdgeOfACoin · 12/10/2021 20:40

Tarquin.

I genuinely really like the name but could never get away with it.

WildCherryBlossom · 12/10/2021 20:40

Yes I think I know an equal number of dogs to little girls with the name Lola 😄

inmyslippers · 12/10/2021 20:42

I think Judy could come back. There's got to be some edgy hipsters out there trying to find uncommon vintage names

During one of my pregnancies I was slightly obsessed with boys names ending in an O sound - particularly Sholto, Rosco, Cosmo and the now relatively popular Milo and Arlo. DH vetoed each and every one of them one by one and that baby turned out to be a girl anyway.

I still love Sholto even without the pregnancy hormones so I'm hanging onto it for potential future pets.

(I love PPs chicken line up - I want to meet a hen called Clotilde!!!)
