What names do you love but wouldn't use

I went for a very safe name for my son. But looking at him now he could pull off Rio which his dad wanted to call him. There were others I loved but felt unfair to saddle a child with

Shilo
Hudon
Shay
Franklyn
Carter
Lorenzo (we have strong northern accents and it would sound ridiculous)
Carey - due a come back
Tate
Ira
Silas

Lysander.
I love it, but I feel like it only works for an older person. I can't imagine a baby or toddler Lysander.

inmyslippers · 13/10/2021 08:26

Atticus is very very cool, I love it but we couldn't pull it off.

I love Bibi but it's just a bit daft.
Lenor is gorgeous but will forever be fabric softener.

Luckily DS17 was a boy because his name was going to be Isis !

hairybakers · 13/10/2021 09:21

Also, Sukie/Suki is one of my all time faves but I can imagine once they hit their teenage years the teasing would be relentless

Lipsandlashes · 13/10/2021 09:22

Artemis but it wouldn't suit our surname and DH definitely wouldn't have gone for it.

inmyslippers · 13/10/2021 09:24

Artemis and Ariadne! Love a Greek mythology name.

@orangeautumnleaves

Hunter. Devon.

Love these as names but not brave enough to ever get used by us!

I know a few Devon's and it never feels like a wacky name, if you like it I wouldn't write it off :)
AleynEivlys · 13/10/2021 10:02

Cassiano!

SugarPlum10 · 13/10/2021 10:38

Piper for a girl and sharing the love for Demelza.

Puffalicious · 13/10/2021 10:53

Some crackers on here that are great.

If I'd had a girl (have 3 boys) I really wanted Tuesday - no idea why, I've just always loved it and it went well with the surname. DH vetoed it straight off but said I could use it as a middle name. No need in the end. We would have used Muirne (Pronounced Murren - like the love interest in Braveheart!) as we're Scottish with a v Scottish surname. My cousin in Canada has a Pandora which I'm slightly jealous of. But here with the jewellery maybe it would have been strange.

For boys I love all my boys' names, especially DS2 and DS3 as I feel I became braver, but with DS1 we played it safe and it's pretty common here. We've always shortened it and it's much more unusual, but still. If I had my time over he'd be a Cahill or Fergus.

Cassiano

^ very spicy 🤌🏾

Odette - so stunning but wouldn’t work in my accent. I’m from Glasgow and I (and most other people I know) don’t really pronounce my Ts!
Violetta - same reason as above but so gorgeous
Lavender - absolutely love but would never be brave enough to use it

SoundAndVisions · 13/10/2021 11:02

I absolutely love Meredith but it doesn’t suit our last name.
Kit, but I don’t love Christopher. Matthew but I hate any shortenings of it so we used it for DS’s middle name.

dundermifflinthisispam1 · 13/10/2021 11:03

Oh and Ormano for a boy. Beautiful old Italian name but I’m not one bit Italian so would be ridiculous. Sigh

FuggyPidding · 13/10/2021 11:12

Cornelius
Amos
Bram
Silas
Linus

Love them all!

Also like Flora (spreads easily), Stella (lager) & Scarlett (red haired genes)

They're all beautiful names. I'm also from Glasgow and pronounce all my Ts as do all my friends and family. The lack of glottal stop is not universal in Glasgow!

I particularly love Violetta. Use it!

Cas112 · 13/10/2021 11:53

I love Binky for a girl

LaBellina · 13/10/2021 11:55

Valentina

I love it but it’s a bit ott

Puffalicious · 13/10/2021 11:56

@Cas112

I love Binky for a girl
I'm laughing here as DH calls me Binky (plus surname which begins with B) as my posh name. As in like 'Binky B... what do you think of Sir Boris's new policy?' Grin
TheSpiral · 13/10/2021 12:02

Psyche, I love the sound it makes, and I love Keats' Ode to Psyche, but wouldn't use it for all the psychiatric connotations and, of course, the spelling issues.

Arnie. I think it's a great sound, again, but I don't like Arnold at all and also you can't escape the Terminator connotations.

AliasGrape · 13/10/2021 12:13

Lots of Italian or Spanish boys names, we are neither and they don’t really work in our accent - things like Santiago, Vincenzo, Camilo, Rafael.

Im adding Tate to my boys list (it’s entirely imaginary as we have a girl and are stopping at one 🙂 )

For a girl I absolutely love Hero but just don’t think we could use it. I also loved Valentina when I was pregnant but husband was having none of it.

Brigittebidet · 13/10/2021 12:16

I love Atticus.

Also absolutely love Vikram, but as both my DC are blond haired, blue-eyed, with not a jot of Indian heritage I feared it may be a bit odd.

inmyslippers · 13/10/2021 12:25

I adore the name Amos! I used to care for a young man by that name. It's very much his name though so just wouldn't use it

Juniper
Minerva
Calliope
Andromeda

They are just too out there for us!

inmyslippers · 13/10/2021 12:27

Lots of Italian or Spanish boys names

^^ yes they seem very popular. We just sadly don't have the flair. We're a very mixed family but not a drop of Spanish or Italian.
