What names do you love but wouldn't use

I went for a very safe name for my son. But looking at him now he could pull off Rio which his dad wanted to call him. There were others I loved but felt unfair to saddle a child with

Shilo
Hudon
Shay
Franklyn
Carter
Lorenzo (we have strong northern accents and it would sound ridiculous)
Carey - due a come back
Tate
Ira
Silas

Nevaeh. It’s actually a really beautiful sounding name

^^ I too love Nevaeh but it gets absolutely dragged on here.

Oh and Lucy, such a pretty name but perhaps not appropriate to name a baby the same as my childhood dog’s name 😁

Lsquiggles · 12/10/2021 21:17

Elijah - absolutely love it but I don't feel like we're the sort of people to use it, not sure why Blush

omfgimgettingmarried · 12/10/2021 21:19

Ishmael - one of my favourite names but from a completely different culture to ours.

Keir - love it, and I'm a leftie, but Starmer is too well known right now (and mostly for the wrong reasons Hmm)

StillSmallVoice · 12/10/2021 21:24

Most of these are unusual for good reasons. Many comments have suggested what those good reasons are.

Among the lots of suggestions, Xavier was actually quite common in Catholic circles in Australia. Cultural.

DD was at school with a Raven. She was very impressed. He was Kate Bush's nephew.

Children's names are hugely fashionable. I am from a generation of Julie (Andrews), Jackie (Kennedy) and the rest.

Just think,

Chachama · 12/10/2021 21:29

No I wouldn’t regret it. We are in wales, fluent welsh speaking so thinking a welsh name is more fitting anyway. Plus my partner hates Audrey 🙈

KohlaParasanda · 12/10/2021 21:37

My youngest daughter would have been called Felicity if her grandmother hadn't spoiled it by pulling a face and saying, "Yuck, that's a cat's name."

Lollypop701 · 12/10/2021 21:42

Malachi… husband wouldn’t have it at all.

Standrewsschool · 12/10/2021 21:46

@ChrissyPlummer

My friend’s husband is called Thiago, they’re from South America though.

Lolita is not a lovely name, even without the obvious connotation, it means ‘sorrows’.

Silas brings back memories of the kids TV show from the 1980s or the serial killer in ‘Hollyoaks’.

The Hollyoaks connection has ruined that name for me. He was evil, and very cunning, a good storyline.
queenatom · 12/10/2021 21:47

@omfgimgettingmarried, yes, love Keir but the connection is too strong at the moment!

I love Salim but completely culturally inappropriate for two white Brits.

Swithin is very good. Swith is a good short form.

My favourite is Cinderella.

It would be so cool, if I was young enough to have another child. (I think Cindy is due a revival with the option to tell people the formal version.)

Two girls' names I have liked and mentioned to others who have used them are India and Mercedes. Mercedes has the special religious association. ( India grew up to be such a beautiful, kind girl).

LadyLothbrook · 12/10/2021 21:49

I really wanted Sloane both times for my DDs but husband wasn't having any of it 😕

Standrewsschool · 12/10/2021 21:51

Bjorn - always loved this name

Leo - considered this but then Tony Blair named his son Leo, didn’t want people thinking I was copying him

Roderigo - loved this name since studying Othello in six form. No Italian heritage so would have been weird

OrangeJuiceAndNoodles · 12/10/2021 21:55

I always thought I'd have a Cosmo. It's been my favourite boys name for about a decade.

However, everybody I've run it by seems perplexed/horrified by it. I wonder if people hearing it for the first time associate it with the magazine? I can't otherwise understand why they don't like it.

And it's also becoming quite popular I think.

shreddednips · 12/10/2021 21:56

Demelza and Minerva.

Aorh · 13/10/2021 01:17

Names I’ve always loved but I tend to like far more standard, traditional names, so these were too outside my comfort zone

Atticus
Magnus (very close to being within my comfort zone but worried about what would happen if he ended up being small)
Wilfred

Willow (totally not my sort of name but to me, it’s beautiful)

Luckingfovely · 13/10/2021 01:30

I love Flora for a girl, but it's just too... margariney.

FictionalCharacter · 13/10/2021 02:11

I wanted to call dd Pearl, DH vetoed it and I’m very glad he did!

Lifeinthescratcher · 13/10/2021 02:36

@Ellarain

Maverick
Love it! Top gun🙃
Dustyblue · 13/10/2021 05:09

Another fan of Mordecai :)

Ivo & Innes for boys, Ambrosia & Aurora for girls. Not together!

All thoroughly vetoed by DH.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 13/10/2021 05:30

Peony
Dominic

JuneJuly · 13/10/2021 05:44

Grover, Vaughn or Murray for boys.

Araminta or Ariadne for girls.

SinoohXaenaHide · 13/10/2021 05:54

Peregrin (due to loving the book "The Ordinary Princess"). Couldn't do that to a child, but it's a lovely name.

Seedlipvshendricks · 13/10/2021 05:54

Arietty for a girl, inspired by the borrowers! Husband vetoed it as sons name also starts with A.
