Hi all. After considering middle names for Ada I'm also thinking about first name River. Any MN suggestions? Thanks x

@Bananarama21 I know a couple of kids named River! Gorgeous name, and it suits each child I've seen it with in a different way.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 30/08/2021 22:42

Also i hate when you get a post like this with a nice unusual name, and you get rude and nasty posters!
It's not as if she said Fufublobbykins is it?!

I have a very unusual name, never bullied or commented on as a child. Love it and have never wanted to change it. The only people who've ever made comments are close minded adults.

Totally agree. You just know what all the posters who warn of bullying, never making a success of yourself or not being able to be a plausibly named pensioner/ prime minister are like irl.

I don’t see anything wrong with River as a name for a female of any age.
Sounds nice and no unpleasant associations. And I’m white, older and have several degrees so don’t feel I can be told my preference is due to my immaturity, racial bias (how does that affect one?) or lack of education.
I feel that a 3 or more syllable name beginning with a consonant flows best. Having said that I do like the suggested River Wren.

abitfunny · 31/08/2021 05:54

It’s a lovely name OP especially for a girl. Ignore the (very boring) mumsnetters on here who in real life probably wouldn’t say boo to a goose, yet have so much time on their hands to speak so passionately about a name choice.

I like River Pearl! Or River Maeve

MrsGilly1 · 31/08/2021 06:23

Hi,

Lovely name but I agree it needs a really feminine middle name - like..

River Annabelle
River Beatrice
River Charlotte
River Darcie
River Emmeline
River Florence
River Gracie
River Hermonie
River Isabella
River Jemima
River Kaitlin
River Lucia
River Madeleine
River Nellie
River Ophelia
River Primrose
River Sophia
River Violet
River Xanthe
River Zadie

Guineapigbridge · 31/08/2021 06:36

I think it's a cool and sophisticated name.
Someone earlier suggested River Rosemary, which sounds good to my ears. Or River Josephine.

summerhillgang · 31/08/2021 10:33

River Ellis
River Alice
River Evan
River Margot
River Eden
River Clementine
River Constance
River Rowan
River Seren
River Noa
River Leontine
River Romily
River Octavia

Sane?

HoldingTheDoor · 31/08/2021 10:45

SummerHillGang has a nice list though. River Alice sounds particularly nice imho.

Is prejudice the definition of sanity?

@Cindie943811A racial bias (how does that affect one?)

With names, many formerly enslaved people like to choose novel names that set aside those imposed on them. Many other people are unaware of this and some regard novel names as "not a name".

That's really interesting. I didn't know that but it makes perfect sense.
I think there's a very obvious bit of systemic racism on this particular baby name board.
The default tends to towards white middle class English names. Any other nationality/race/culture gets mentioned in the OP.

I don't like River, but don't hate it. It doesn't sound good with any of the middle names suggested though, and I can't think of a middle name it does sound good with. Nature names sound utterly ridiculous and like you're naming a species of plant/bird - River Wren? River Lily? River Willow?! All have been suggested and... Nooooo. Just don't work. And traditional names also sound ridiculous because they just dont go, they clash totally in style. Can she have no middle?

WhoppingBigBackside · 31/08/2021 12:03

River Eden flows.
In Cumbria.

PineapplePanda · 31/08/2021 13:35

@RumpoleoftheBaileys

Phoenix

But to the PP who suggested 'River Gypsy' come on now...

There literally was a famous "River Phoenix" who overdosed.
summerhillgang · 31/08/2021 13:39

Instead of criticising the name OP has already chosen, or suggesting she not have a middle name at all, why don't people on this thread just help her out by making positive suggestion? Why else are you on the board? If you're not hear for that move along.

Gothichouse40 · 31/08/2021 17:19

So Im now predjudiced, no Im not. I had an unusual name and got bullied for years with it. My post is nothing to do with predjudice, but everything to do with how children can be bullied. The two people I know who changed their names by deed poll, they really did hate their names and one was so embarrassed about his name he shortened it, so no one knew his real name. He then changed it by deed poll as soon as he turned 18. If no one on this thread believes me thats fine. Im trying to think of the child as I was one of those children. Name your child whatever you wish. I do hope all works out well for them.

notacooldad · 31/08/2021 18:04

I was reminded of this thread this morning when I saw an report about Sharon Stone's 11 month nephew son who died of organ failure. He was called River William. It was a tragic story.

BSintolerant · 31/08/2021 18:18

@whosaidtha

Can you imagine a 50 year old woman introducing herself as River?
I met a 94 year old whose name was Delta. She was a character.

Possible middle name for River OP? Wink My phone autocorrected that to “Rover”. Woof.

AlmostThereMaybe · 01/09/2021 20:48

I was thinking maybe something with one syllable, like River Fay, River May, River Leigh…

Livvielo · 01/09/2021 20:58

I know 2 Rivers.
One is River Primrose. The other is River Rae.
Also know a ‘Ryver’ and a ‘Layke.’

honeygriff · 02/09/2021 00:06

I like River Rose, River Mari, River Seren or River Star, River Pearl, River Samiera, River Riya, to name but a few. I think it's a lovely name btw.

Backtoblack1 · 02/09/2021 00:12

River Rose is beautiful 💕
