Hi all. After considering middle names for Ada I'm also thinking about first name River. Any MN suggestions? Thanks x

@Gothichouse40

I got flamed on here for saying I did not like a name. Im sorry but Id use River as a middle name. Can you imagine a pensioner named River. Children have to go to school with a name, live with a name and grow old with a name. I really don't understand this fad for finding the most unusual and outlandish name you can saddle your children with. Ive known two adults who have already changed their name legally as they hated the Christian name they were given at birth. I know my view will not be popular but please think about your child's name carefully.
Yes all pensioners should be called Margaret.

Sometimes posters ask for opinions on names. @heyitshol didn't, she asked for middle name ideas.
Someone upthread suggested Wren as a middle name. I really like those two together.

I think pensioner River would be a really cool old lady 🤩

@Bananarama21

Please don't name your child river its massively unfair.

No it's not. I wouldn't think twice about someone named river. He's hardly going to be bullied for it?

People have much more unusual names and nobody cares. I went to secondary with an Elvis, a Unique and more I can't recall off the top of my head.

...
Anyway, another nature name might be overkill, try a classic name op?

roolz · 30/08/2021 14:47

@HoldingTheDoor

Can you imagine a 50 year old woman introducing herself as River?

I can't. It's a ridiculous name on an adult.

Much like Cliff, Heath, Rose etc? Equally ridiculous, yes?

amillionrosepetals · 30/08/2021 14:49

I bet Tom Cruise's kids are glad they didn't get called River.

Yes
HTH

Florasteddy · 30/08/2021 14:50

Old lady River who's never been able to get a job, or a partner, because she got a tattoo which possibly has drug references on her wrist when she was on holiday and under 18.
If some of the fabulous bonkers posters on here are to be believed Smile

Florasteddy · 30/08/2021 14:51

She's had a fabulous life

MissBattleaxe · 30/08/2021 15:00

I think it's prettier than a lot of other names we see suggested. I'd keep to the natural world theme. River Rose, River Jasmine, River Daisy

Doubledoorsontogarden · 30/08/2021 15:22

Do you need a middle name? River anything is going to sound like the name of a river.

I think one of Jamie Oliver’s kids (boy?) is River, possibly River Rocket. There was a thread on here a while ago that ended with the suggestion of River O’Liver.

My sister has a similar name along the same lines.
I haven't met anyone one else with the same name. She is 53 now.
Nobody falls about laughing when she says her name. She works in law and has done very well for herself so her name hasn't stopped her getting promotion after promotion over the decades. She had no problem with uni however 'ridiculous her name is on an adult'
Perhaps it's your imagination that is limiting you

I also know a lot of people called Brook both m and f, isn't that similar to River? Nothing wrong with that either.

wincarwoo · 30/08/2021 16:43

I'm wondering whether the detractors are expressing their own silly prejudices whilst hiding behind concern for the successful future of anyone with a unusual/rare name.

HoldingTheDoor · 30/08/2021 16:53

No. Stop trying to psychoanalyse people who disagree with you. I just think it's a bad name, as I'm allowed to. I'm sure there are names that you don't particularly care for.

Ingridla · 30/08/2021 16:53

Nile, Deep

No, I think it's a lovely first. name but maybe doesn't necessarily need a middle...

Preferences are fine prejudices aren't.
HoldingTheDoor · 30/08/2021 16:59

It's a preference. There are plenty of commonly used names that I don't care for either.

anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 30/08/2021 17:01

It's not a name I'd choose as it just reminds me of Doctor Who
