Bertha is a very harsh and unappealing name.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 29/08/2021 09:53

Its a machines name, be it the big Bertha guns of total annihilation or the helpful production plant of the kids cartoon...

JanglyBeads · 29/08/2021 09:53

Well you obviously wanted to gauge reactions, and you’ve done it. In the end it’s up to you and the DF of course.

ufucoffee · 29/08/2021 09:54

To me she would be black pudding Bertha

Twizbe · 29/08/2021 09:56

I'm afraid I don't like it either. I loved the TV show though.

I'm amazed you think Elizabeth is old fashioned by Bertha isn't

Godwits · 29/08/2021 09:57

What about Bertha on bc but nn Bethany which can be shortened to Beth or Anny?

Bethany is a lovely name and I'd be happy to be called it myself. Why not use that and try the Bertha nickname and see how that goes? I'd hate to be actually called Bertha.
HoldingTheDoor · 29/08/2021 10:01

No to Bertha on the BC. It doesn't matter what nn you give her. It's still a terrible name. And how the hell do you get Bethany from Bertha? Why not just call her Bethany?

RedRobin100 · 29/08/2021 10:03

Bethany obviously isn’t a nickname for Bertha. Why not just call her Bethany?
What’s the point in being so adamant on using a Bertha (which I agree with above is a bit awful) but then not actually using it in any way? It’s a bit odd.
I’d say this post is a wind up as it just makes no sense..?

Or how about you just name her Bethany Hmm. Nn are not generally twice as long as your real name! Bertha is just absolutely fucking awful. As are Berta and Bet. Bethany is not my cup of tea but a definite improvement on the other suggestions

Right it's definitely a wind-up, well done OP.

PostmanCat · 29/08/2021 10:04

Bertha = big Bertha (as many before me have pointed out). Anyone who has read Jane Eyre will think of Mr Rochesters mad wife.

You seem intent on using it though so go ahead Confused

notacooldad · 29/08/2021 10:06

What about if I insist people pronounce it the germanic way: Berta?
Just give it up!!🤣

Why would you put one name on the BC, call them another name as a nickname which has nothing to do with that first name and then shorten the nickname to something else? My mind boggles at the thought! And I come from a family where we all have silly nicknames!
HoldingTheDoor · 29/08/2021 10:08

I Do Not Like Bertha In A Box
I DO NOT LIKE Bertha WITH A FOX.
I DO NOT LIKE Bertha IN A HOUSE.
I DO NOT LIKE Bertha WITH A MOUSE.
I DO NOT LIKE Bertha HERE OR THERE.
I DO NOT LIKE Bertha ANYWHERE!

If you aren’t even going to call her Bertha then wtf is the point of naming her Bertha? “Yes, it’s Bertha but everyone calls me Anny, no, not Annie, it’s Anny, with a y, no, A…N…N…Y. Anny, you see? No, not like the orphan, with a y, it’s short for Bethany - Beth-Anny. No, my names not Bethany, it’s Bertha, but I get called Anny, as it’s short for Bethany. No, I don’t know why either.”

Just call her Bertha. At least it’s honest.

HoldingTheDoor · 29/08/2021 10:09

Excuse the capitals but honestly, I'm beginning to feel like I'm in some MN version of Green Eggs and Ham.

PostmanCat · 29/08/2021 10:11

You would be better off having Bethany on the BC and her being known as that and you calling her Bertha as her nickname. Then when she is older she can tell you to stop using her awful nickname because of how embarrassing it is!

chickywoo · 29/08/2021 10:12

Agree with nos, sorry, and also you can’t really plan a nickname it’s something that just comes along in time, if you prefer Bess or Thea or Bertie because you don’t really like Bertha then just call her one of those names if you like them.

Flowers500 · 29/08/2021 10:13

Why are you so determined to tie a giant bloody boulder around your daughter’s neck??

TBH if I heard the name Bertha used nowadays in the UK I would assume her parents are Nazi sympathisers with an unhealthy interest in German military history. There are no positive associations for the name. Making it be pronounced the German way is even more dodgy.

Tataru · 29/08/2021 10:13

If you feel you must use Bertha because it's a family name or something, use it as a middle name. But it really is awful for a first name for a little girl. I instantly thought Big Bertha and I would hate to be a young girl with a name that made people think that. I think it would be such a shame when the names you want her to be known by are far nicer.

Elvisinthechipshop · 29/08/2021 10:14

OP the reason people hate the name is that is has unfortunate associations and has an ugly, harsh sound. Roberta is nearly as bad (it's my middle name, I loathe it). Also no small girl alive wants the nickname 'Bertie'. Please give your daughter a nice name, there are thousands of them.

namechange7865 · 29/08/2021 10:14

OP is this your name that you're trying to convince a child to name your grandchild after you or something?! As you professed on another thread to have been dating in the 1980s I'm assuming you are not bearing this child yourself, so let's be grateful for that and stop with the Bertha nonsense yeah?!
