nickname Bertie, Thea, Bess?

Those just aren't nicknames for Bertha. I know there's a fashion for clunky names at the moment but Christ Bertha....BERTHA? I do know a sweet baby called Agatha which is similar but without the negative associations

Reminds me of the bit in one of the Anne of Green Gables books where Anne's late mother was called Bertha and her daughter has it as a middle name - she wishes it was her first name as it is so beautiful (she's called Marrilla known as Rilla)

Given that you keep suggesting 'nicknames' which are nothing like Bertha, are you trying to honour a Bertha? If so, use that as a middle name or second middle name and call your child something you would actually call them. If that's Bess or Thea or whatever then go for that.

Big Bertha was a massive cannon used by the Germans in the First World War.
It's a horrible name for a child.

For what it’s worth, I find it far more twee when someone tells me their child has a really convoluted nickname. So they say something like oh this is Persephone but we call her Poppy. I just feel like saying well why did you name her Persephone then.

I love some older names like Beryl and even Ethel or Enid have grown on me since i named my teenagers.

I get that it's cool to use the less obvious vintage names, but some names are redundant for good reason. Because they're very fucking ugly.

Please don't do it; I knew someone at school who was given her grandmother's name as a sort of 'honour'. It was awful, she hated it, we hated it and when she grew up asked everyone to call her by her middle name. That was a very common name ;think Jane or Susan (not either). And please not Alberta either, just as bad. Some names are extinct for a reason and this is one.

I'd give it a wide berth.....a. it could berth many unpleasant nicknames.

This absolutely has to be a wind up? Balonz would be a more sensible name choice than Bertha

I too would worry if she was exceptionally tall or ever had a weight issue as the teasing is waiting to happen.

I wouldn’t go for anything with Bert in, it’s a really ugly sound IMO.

Beryl is definitely in the same category as Bertha imo. Along with Barbara and Bernice. I think a lot of B names are hard to bring back.

I know a Berthania, but she uses her middle name.
