baby name - Huxley + associations

Really set on the name Huxley for our baby boy due November,
only association my husband & I connected was Aldous Huxley

However, did a quick search on these forums & see lots of people mentioning they wouldn't choose the name because 'Huxley Pig'. I googled & can see this is a kids cartoon that had 2 series 1989-1990 in the UK

My husband and I (born 1991) have never heard of this - can someone explain how popular this was & what age people recognise this association - I'm worried if its a household name, my husband less so

Absolutely Huxley Pig (oink oink). He was a bit dim wasn’t he?

DS1 has a friend called Huxley, so I think of him - it’s a great name, I don’t think of Huxley Pig.

Fresh and more interesting than another Archie, Alfie, Charlie or Harry.

I say you should go for it if you both love it. I was born early 80’s and was an avid children’s TV watcher but can’t remember Huxley pig at all, so I wouldn’t let that put me off. Good luck.

Your DH could call himself Huxley for a while to gauge reaction.

I know a four year old Huxley, known as Hux - it's a cute name. Never heard of the pig, but I wouldn't have been watching kids TV by then as I was born in the early 80s. I don't think it can be that popular, but you'll probably have a specific age group who will know it.

I was born 1983 and have no recollection. People are bonkers on the baby names posts, they go out of their way to make negative connotations which no child would ever make! I once saw a poster saying the name Alice (the most inoffensive name ever) might look like A Lice (not even a phrase)!

I would roll my eyes and tell my self they are lacking the culture to have read Brave New World.

I have a daughter named after a classical mythology figure which has more recently been used as a male name in a children’s novel and people questioned when I used it and I rose above it and told myself at least I’d had a classical education.

Oh please. Don’t worry yourself over a two season cartoon from over 30 years ago. Your little Huxley may grow up to travel the world, maybe live abroad. Don’t deny him the name you want for him because of a minor parochial cartoon character known by a sliver of the British population. Think big.

Also, 100% Aldous Huxley. Never even heard of the cartoon.

I think its a great name.

I considered Aldous for DS1 but instead chose a famous kids TV rodent. I have had a few comments but not many and I usually point out that the name comes from a poem that I like which usually shuts people up. I would just be prepared to say to anyone who mentions Huxley Pig that its after 'Aldous Huxley' which is obviously more highbrow anyway

I'm 37 and thought Aldous Huxley, I don't remember Huxley Pig at all to be honest.

First thought - lovely name.
Second thought - pig.
Third thought - pigs are lovely, intelligent, sensitive creatures.

I am 70s born and I feel I can just remember a Huxley pig theme tune. But who cares if old people think 'pig'. Younger people will not have a clue. Wouldn't stop you using George. Although I wonder if Peppa became less popular...?

Yes - to me Huxley is a pig! On further investigation I thought I watched him as a child but now realise it was probably as a hungover student!!

I think you are overthinking (as we all do when trying to come up with baby names).

I mean where would you stop - Hux as a NN but that is similar to hex?

This was my favourite show, I had them all on VHS. I'm mid 30s.

I named my dog Huxley (after the author), and until that point I’d never heard of Huxley pig. Yet now without fail, every walk I go on where someone hears his name, I hear “Huxley pig Oink Oink” or “why did you name your dog after a pig?!”. So I would say in a cross section of society, of all ages, it does seem extraordinarily well known (I must have been the exception having never heard of it!)

That said, it’s a truly fabulous name. And a great way to make literary friends, because the few times someone does ask me if he’s named after Aldous, I beam and immediately think ‘you’re my kind of person’
If you like the name, use it. Your little boy will soon make it his own, and no one will think of anyone but him when they hear it. Go for it!
