baby name - Huxley + associations

GraceLondon91 · 20/07/2021 12:50

Really set on the name Huxley for our baby boy due November,
only association my husband & I connected was Aldous Huxley

However, did a quick search on these forums & see lots of people mentioning they wouldn't choose the name because 'Huxley Pig'. I googled & can see this is a kids cartoon that had 2 series 1989-1990 in the UK

My husband and I (born 1991) have never heard of this - can someone explain how popular this was & what age people recognise this association - I'm worried if its a household name, my husband less so

thanks so much - any info appreciated!

I know of Huxley Pig, it was rubbish so can't imagine that popular. Used to fast forward through it on a video of lots of lods programs. I did think of it but not in a negative way, I mean George pig is much more well known these days and George is a much more common name. I wouldn't worry about it and go for it if you love it! X

Mid forties with younger siblings born through the 80's and 90's.
I've never heard of the pig despite lots of kids cartoons being on.

IsobelEd · 21/07/2021 14:25

I don't particularly remember the TV series but I do associate the name Huxley with pigs. Perhaps we had a book or something.

SnowAndIcicles · 21/07/2021 14:54

Aldous Huxley

Also the biologist Thomas Huxley who was nicknamed 'Darwin's bulldog', as he defended Charles Darwin's theory of evolution when it was introduced to society.

HeechulOppa · 22/07/2021 17:51

Pig for me too - I’m 41. My 9 year old knows it too because he used to watch it - it was definitely shown on a kids channel in the last few years, so it’s not going to be completely forgotten about. And like another poster said, you can guarantee a lot of parents and grandparents will immediately associate it with the pig and ‘hilariously’ tell their young kids so it may come to haunt him.
I wouldn’t do it.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/07/2021 22:57

I once saw a poster saying the name Alice (the most inoffensive name ever) might look like A Lice (not even a phrase)!

Sadly, for a lot of people of a certain age range, whenever they meet an Alice, their first thought will be of the Roy Chubby Brown-'enhanced' version of the old Smokie hit. Unless they're very vulgar, they'd never vocalise it - but they will think it.

My first thought was Huxley Pig too, and now I can't get the theme tune out of my head. If you wanted to be really esoterically intellectual, you could give him any combination of Huxley, Lewis and Kennedy as his first three names, in remembrance of three extremely famous and highly-esteemed men who all died on exactly the same day. I'd probably go for Lewis as the first one, though.

I considered Aldous for DS1 but instead chose a famous kids TV rodent.

Dangermouse or Penfold?!?!

MoiraNotRuby · 22/07/2021 23:05

I'm 44, my DC are teens, and I thought Huxley Pig straight away. In our family he is more famous as a book character than a TV show.

Birchtree1 · 22/07/2021 23:17

I can’t talk…..our sone is a Rupert 😁
We still love the Name and most young People don’t know the history/ connection!
Personally I like Huxley!

Nervousdave · 22/07/2021 23:27

I'm early 30s and my first thought is Huxley pig (think my nanna had it on vhs for us when we went to stay?) .... but also that I love that name and also considered it!

MollyBloomYes · 23/07/2021 02:26

I'm 35, born right at the very very end of 1985 (couple of days before New Years Eve). Never heard of Huxley Pig! But really there's loads of names connected with kids programmes, Thomas the tank engine, Milo the tweenie, Rosie and Jim....

Fwiw I think it's a fab name, it would be the name I choose if I were to have another baby and even if people do associate with this pig at first eventually it just becomes their friend/cousin/nephew/colleague Huxley who is entirely themselves. And his classmates definitely won't have heard of it so I think you're fine!

kurtney · 23/07/2021 14:01

Dangermouse or Penfold?!?!

My first thought was Roland, but that might be showing my age.

Classica · 23/07/2021 14:03

Jerry or Fievel!

SleepingStandingUp · 23/07/2021 14:05

Born early 80s, i thought Aldous.

Even if some people initially think oh like Huxley the Pig, he's not mainstream or particularly retro cool.

DojoWojo · 23/07/2021 14:12

I'm an 80s baby and never heard of Huxley pig.

I have taught a Huxley and he was the most lovely boy. So I only have positive connotations with the name. I'd say go for it if you like it!

ButYouJustPointedToAIIOfMe · 23/07/2021 14:26

Only think of Huxley Brooker-Huq.
If it's good enough for them...

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/07/2021 14:43

Only think of Huxley Brooker-Huq.

I'm not a big fan of repeaty-type names - I know it's not quite Robert Roberts, but Huxley and Huq together don't sound that distinctive to my ear.

Mind, their other one is called Covey. Glad that they didn't go for a BC David/NN Davey scenario Grin

incrediblehux · 23/07/2021 14:48

My maiden name was Huxley. I got called Huxley Pig (and had the theme song sung at me) all through school. I hated it. Absolutely loved it as an adult and miss it a bit since I got married (although don't regret changing it). I would never use it as a first name though. Maybe a middle name but only because it's a family name for me.

MooseBreath · 23/07/2021 15:33

Never heard of Huxley Pig. Never heard of Aldous Huxley.

Not keen on the name Huxley, but to each their own!

withpeaceandlove · 23/07/2021 15:38

I think of pig but there's several Huxley's at the nursery my son goes to and the one my mum works in so I think that connection will fade as the name grows in popularity.

ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 23/07/2021 16:14

I have a friend with children called Max and Ruby (a kids TV show) and another with boys called Jake and Milo (The Tweenies). I don't associate those names with the kids shows anymore, I think of my friends' children.

Huxley is a lovely name, if you both love it then go for it.

superram · 23/07/2021 16:24

Definitely pig, sorry.

Fluffymule · 23/07/2021 16:35

This popped up on my twitter feed earlier and I immediately thought of this thread from yesterday.

Just to counter all the pig associations (which I also first thought of)

@GraceLondon91
Just came across this thread.

What did you end up deciding?

My DS, aged 17, is named Huxley. Loved the name, fits him and I've had countless people (strangers) commenting on what a great name it is. He's known as 'Hux'.

I still love the name. At the time, I'd not met anyone or a child with that name. Still the case, although I've had a couple of people (no more) say they know another Huxley. Both commented again how much they like the name.

Orphlids · 23/10/2025 21:45

At junior school in 1990, several of us were sent to use the guillotine which was in the corridor. In the absence of the teacher’s supervision, Mark W began singing the theme tune to Huxley Pig, but I was left aghast when he replaced the Huxley with Fucksley. I couldn’t believe my ears. This is bizarrely one of my clearest childhood memories.

I think we all have our own associations but I can honestly say I have had at least 15-20 people (complete strangers) comment on what a great name it is, all ages too.

I love, love it.
