baby name - Huxley + associations

GraceLondon91 · 20/07/2021 12:50

Really set on the name Huxley for our baby boy due November,
only association my husband & I connected was Aldous Huxley

However, did a quick search on these forums & see lots of people mentioning they wouldn't choose the name because 'Huxley Pig'. I googled & can see this is a kids cartoon that had 2 series 1989-1990 in the UK

My husband and I (born 1991) have never heard of this - can someone explain how popular this was & what age people recognise this association - I'm worried if its a household name, my husband less so

thanks so much - any info appreciated!

@Ohshitiveturnedintomymother

I was born 1983 and have no recollection. People are bonkers on the baby names posts, they go out of their way to make negative connotations which no child would ever make! I once saw a poster saying the name Alice (the most inoffensive name ever) might look like A Lice (not even a phrase)!

I would roll my eyes and tell my self they are lacking the culture to have read Brave New World.

I have a daughter named after a classical mythology figure which has more recently been used as a male name in a children’s novel and people questioned when I used it and I rose above it and told myself at least I’d had a classical education.

This is true...although the Alice thing reminds me of when I was a child. My grandparents took me to see a version of Alice in Wonderland at the theatre, I was about 6 I think. At one point they started spelling out Alice with each letter on a big card. But they started with the E. So I read it as ICE, then LICE, then turned to my gran and asked her what A LICE meant Grin

Reminds me of that awful influencer YouTube family who adopted a child with additional needs from China for views, sponsorships and money then 'rehomed' him like a stray dog a year or two later.

Was all over the news. The Stauffer family, childs name was Huxley. Poor little mite.

BunnyRuddington · 20/07/2021 14:38

I would never have made the connection but then I'm so old I was working when that show was on tv.

MysteriousMonkey · 20/07/2021 14:38

I thought Bear, like Teddy bear... Perhaps I had a Ted named Huxley Confused anyway I like it a lot.

Maybe you were thinking of Teddy Ruxpin, one of the coveted toys of the 80s! Grin

Truly one of the saddest and most disturbing stories I have read around the whole subject of family 'influencers'. The fact they used the phrase 'rehomed' was so shocking. Hope he is flourishing in a loving and supportive environment now.
NanooCov · 20/07/2021 14:49

I'm 44 and would associate it with Huxley Pig. I can even remember the theme tune...

VoyageInTheDark · 20/07/2021 14:51

Born mid 80s and not heard of Huxley pig. I know of a dog called Huxley and I think it sounds pretty cool

Roselilly36 · 20/07/2021 14:53

I think it’s cute.

Gribbit987 · 20/07/2021 15:26

Never heard of the pig. However, for me, Huxley is the name of a dog.

I would google “Huxley dog”. There’s even an Australian article about the name being used mostly for dogs. The mother talks of her “distress” which obviously is silly. But it might irritate you and I do think people will instinctively think “dogs name”.

SionnachRua · 20/07/2021 15:29

The Hux sound makes me think of someone vomiting tbh.

saraclara · 20/07/2021 15:30

I saw the title of the OP and instantly thought "pig"

Bells3032 · 20/07/2021 15:31

Born 1988 and never heard of the Pig. what's more important is kids of their generation will likely never have heard of it. i think it's a lovely name btw

Monoxide · 20/07/2021 15:32

Pig was my first thought! Anyone aged 35+ will have been old enough to watch kids tv at the time when Huxley Pig was on. Under 35s probably don’t have the same association.

Graymare · 20/07/2021 15:42

I must admit I immediately thought Huxley Pig but only because DS1 absolutely loved the cartoon. I very much doubt many younger people will make that connection.

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 20/07/2021 15:45

I’m with @jenjen517 I’ve only ever heard of it on the news from that awful influencer family who basically abandoned a child with additional needs. When his needs became apparently they decided they didn’t want him anymore.

I’m the same age as you OP and I don’t know of a Huxley pig.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 20/07/2021 15:58

Huxley is the small village my cousins grew up in. Never heard of Huxley pig.

CornflakesOnTheSolesOfHerShoes · 20/07/2021 16:04

I’m 38 and have never heard of Huxley Pig - I just thought Aldous. It’s not my kind of name as I’m not a fan of surnames as first names, but as far as the pig association goes, it wouldn’t occur to me!

Foxhasbigsocks · 20/07/2021 16:09

Love it!!

I know one - lovely nice looking boy aged 8 and everyone has always said how nice his name is. His dm is cool and free spirited. So that’s what I think of when I hear this name.

80s kid - no pig association for me. Never heard of the cartoon. This is literally the first time I’ve ever heard of it.

I am fairly negative about names that might make kids sound silly but this isn’t ringing a single alarm bell for me.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 20/07/2021 16:17

Born in 90 and didn’t think pig. I know a Huxley and can’t recall anyone mentioning the pig while I’ve been with him and his mum, either - maybe they would if we were older, perhaps we look too young to know what they’re talking about.

My first thought too
IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/07/2021 16:31

No, I think Aldous Huxley too - I wouldn't recognise the pig thing and I was an 80's kid. Must admit I'm not especially fond of the sound of the name but it fits in with the current surname as first name trend so I don't think his peers will think anything of it.

caringcarer · 20/07/2021 16:32

I thought of author, never heard of cartoon pig.

KirstenBlest · 20/07/2021 17:09

It's a surname.
Will be shortened to Huck. Huck that.
