I've checked previous threads and they're quite a few years old. What are current thoughts on this name? We keep returning to it but wonder whether we should just put it to rest?

We already have a Hugo.

It's memorable.

newlabelwriter · 14/07/2021 19:04

Love it and wanted it for DS but DH objected. I was going to call him Iggy for short.

theheartofthematter · 14/07/2021 19:38

I know a baby Ignacio. He is called Iggy. I think it's cool

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 14/07/2021 19:45

I love it and know an 18 year old Ignatius. He's known as Iggy and is cooler than cool .

Etinox · 14/07/2021 19:48

Euf, @midsomermurderess beat me to it with the nn Nacho.
The thing with giving a child a name with a load of baggage is whether they know the baggage iykwim. One of mine has a very unusual very religious name and being able to explain what it meant, counter with a joke and why it was chosen meant it wasn’t a big deal. I’d not choose it if you’re not RC.

Sundance5 · 14/07/2021 19:49

This was on my boys list but never had a boy! I wanted Iggy as a nickname. I think it would be a cool name.

LadyLolaRuben · 14/07/2021 19:52

Please don't do it

Twinsmum2003 · 14/07/2021 21:05

How about Indigo or Inigo? Indy for short, goes nicely with Hugo

UnlimitedChipsAndSalsa · 14/07/2021 21:15

Sorry, I'm not a fan personally. If you do scrap it, maybe try Googling "names with a similar vine to Hugo"? Elias, Atticus (still a bit out there for me), Gideon, Felix?

Whatever you choose, he'll grow into it.

Cindie943811A · 14/07/2021 21:30

What about Jago?
Or Horatio
I feel most people would give an internal groan when told his name was Ignatius or even Aloysius

TatianaBis · 14/07/2021 22:15

No. Inigo?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 14/07/2021 22:25

I like it.

The Hungarian equivalent is Ignac/Ignacz and there was a famous Hungarian doctor called Ignaz Semmelweis who was a pioneer of antiseptic procedures.
he figured out that the high death rate amongst new mothers (mainly during first 6weeks postnatal) was connected to infections due to no handwashing - the same people who helped babies being born had been operating on others or did posthumous examinations and transferred all sorts of stuff...
he's known as "the saviour of mothers"

definitely a top dude to have as a namesake

whenwillthemadnessend · 14/07/2021 22:45

No sounds like a lizard or dinosaur

Jackgrealishscurtains · 14/07/2021 22:51

I had a Catholic upbringing and when we made our confirmation age 14, the lads had competition for who was going to go for the funniest confirmation name - Ignatius was one of the contenders.

Please don't call your kid Ignatius.

daisyjgrey · 14/07/2021 23:32

Is it not part of a Harry Potter spell?

Athrawes · 14/07/2021 23:44

Will your child be lovely or a brat?
I have known an utterly lovely Ignatius who suited and carried his name with aplomb.

Tulips15 · 14/07/2021 23:47

@bert3400

Sounds like a contagious disease - sorry
I agree
TheCrowening · 14/07/2021 23:47

I really don’t like Ignatius but I do like Ignacio, though the nickname for both would undoubtedly be Iggy.

miltonj · 15/07/2021 08:39

This has been on my list for a while, for if we ever have a boy. Love it. Iggy as nickname. Or could even go with Nate.

Kitkat151 · 15/07/2021 08:44

Definately not 🙄

Thedogscollar · 16/07/2021 00:34

It's beyond hideous.

Snugglybuggly · 16/07/2021 00:45

Nooooooooooooo

JamieFrasersBigSwingingKilt · 16/07/2021 00:55

Lead character in the book, Confederacy of Dunces. Not a great character. Not a great book. It's a no from me.

EvenleyWitch · 16/07/2021 01:16

God, no.. aren't there enough boy's names to choose from?
Think how he'll feel as an adult with a name like Ignatius. The only thing it can be shortened to is Iggy, so if you really must call him that, please be kind and give him a cooler middle name so he can choose to use that instead.

EvenleyWitch · 16/07/2021 01:17

@NuffSaidSam

I know a newborn Ignatius nn Iggy.

I think it's fine.

I don't think he'll stand out amongst all the other 'unusual' names.

Oh, he will.
