I've checked previous threads and they're quite a few years old. What are current thoughts on this name? We keep returning to it but wonder whether we should just put it to rest?

We already have a Hugo.

Some strong opinions! I appreciate it. It seems very polarising so I'm inclined to scrap it...

Wouldn’t be for me, it’s quite a ‘lot’ of name if you know what I mean. If you were a flamboyant, confident type of person it would be really cool, but if you were more quiet and reserved it’s very stand-out.

marshmallowmilk · 14/07/2021 00:18

hope you’re joking

Zorya · 14/07/2021 00:20

I like it. Nate for short is nice.

olidora63 · 14/07/2021 00:23

Definitely not if my child but I think a child’s name is such a personal choice.💐

pallisers · 14/07/2021 00:23

I'd presume he was the child of very catholic parents (and possibly where the dad had gone to Jesuit high school).

I don't think it sounds that nice either. The only cool about it is that people don't really use it anymore.

Paddling654 · 14/07/2021 00:24

I would expect him to be either half wolf, rapacious or hard of thinking and have no idea why. Also, it sounds like somewhere you take a train to when you're on holiday.

You're getting into dangerous territory with a Latin name when no one knows their Latin anymore.

MorriseysGladioli · 14/07/2021 00:28

I can't stand it, honestly.
Iggy is ok if your surname is Pop.
What I think doesn't matter though, if you like it. Smile

MiniTheMinx · 14/07/2021 00:32

I hear ignoramus in my head when I say it aloud or read it.

MegaCityOne · 14/07/2021 08:51

Not one I would pick either. What about Horatio? I know of one in Wolverhampton through a cousin of mine, and no one bats an eyelid there.

Tal45 · 14/07/2021 09:56

Awful I'm afraid. Hugo and Ignatius sound very pretentious together IMO - how long before they're on MIC?? Love Nate for short if you did go for it though.

CallMeRisley · 14/07/2021 09:59

I know a girl, 6yo, Ignatia nn Iggy.

Enko · 14/07/2021 10:01

I like it

PaulaPetunia · 14/07/2021 10:01

Jesuits association here.
Agree it depends on location.

Scarby9 · 14/07/2021 10:04

Inigo?

Calphurnia · 14/07/2021 10:07

Indro
Inigo

HoldingTheDoor · 14/07/2021 10:10

It's awful.

toastofthetown · 14/07/2021 10:21

I quite like it. I'm less keen on Iggy, which I think would be somewhat inevitable. Sibling names don't really matter, but with Hugo being so popular it does contrast a little. If I were Hugo I think I'd be a bit jealous that my brother got the fun name!

ignatiusjreilly · 14/07/2021 10:26

Great name Grin

I wouldn't inflict it on a person though.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/07/2021 11:26

Very brave and upper class sounding imo (more so than Hugo which is more popular now) but I do like the sound of it. He will get Iggy though which I'm less sure I like.

Similar Inigo somehow feels a bit more useable to me - although that might be a bit samey with Hugo. I don't know if you want other suggestions but perhaps Magnus or Rufus? They sound good with Hugo to me.

emmathedilemma · 14/07/2021 11:33

It's both amazing and awful at the same time!!

Horehound · 14/07/2021 11:40

Not a fan, sorry

viques · 14/07/2021 11:47

I think you could get away with it if your surname was Rees Mogg, but in that case your poor child(ren) would probably be in line for a lifetime of shame so a weird first name would be neither here nor there.

Cowbells · 14/07/2021 11:59

It's a but Rees-Mogg for my liking but it's fine.

PiccalilliChilli · 14/07/2021 12:02

There's a character in "New Amsterdam" called Ignatius/news Iggy. He's old.

I think it's a bit much.
