What does this name make people think of, is it a controversial choice? I it is pronounced ah-mon-deen.

But you'd pronounce it the same on French and English

Ah mahn deen

Beautiful name.

TatianaBis · 25/04/2021 20:33

It’s not the same. In French it’s Aa mon deen not Ah.

Sarcobaleno · 25/04/2021 23:10

It's a new name to me and I read it as ah-mon-deen. I'm Scottish but still no r in there for me. It does sound like a cake though.

notangelinajolie · 25/04/2021 23:47

I'm not French and I don't know this name but sorry it sounds to me like a brand of antiseptic ointment.

KingdomScrolls · 25/04/2021 23:51

Almondy or chocolate

SwedishEdith · 25/04/2021 23:59

I think it's love but I wouldn't risk it in the UK. Too many chances of it being ruined by bad pronunciation. Maybe have it as a middle name.

JemimaJoy · 26/04/2021 00:10

If I'm being really honest, when I initially saw the title of your thread (at the top of my page) I thought I'd clicked on the wrong board as I thought it was the name of a medication that someone was querying.

I don't HATE it but it does seem very product-y to me.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/04/2021 00:43

Lovely and elegant. But it isn't the most commonplace of French names so it will likely be pronounced more like Ah- man -deen in the UK by the majority (like the start of Amanda with een on the end) - so you and DD will need to be prepared to put up with that (assuming you live here!).

AnotherSunrise · 26/04/2021 01:08

Sounds like food flavouring

Changechangychange · 26/04/2021 01:21

I would think Almondine, which is a kind of cake. Or an almond croissant, depending on the shop.

But it is a pretty name, and I wouldn’t let that put you off using it. No worse than calling your child Madeleine.

Tavannach · 26/04/2021 01:25

Cake.

paralysedbyinertia · 26/04/2021 01:27

I'm afraid the first thing that came to mind when I read the name was the word anodyne. I know they don't sound similar if you pronounce the name properly, but that was my initial thought.

MercyBodle · 26/04/2021 01:41

Lovely name!

DragonDoor · 26/04/2021 01:48

Unless you live in France, I can imagine this scenario playing out regularly-

Did you say Amanda?

No, Ahmondine

Mandy, did you say?

No, Ahmondine

Sorry, can you spell that?

Yes no problem (FFS Hmm) A M A..

AlwaysLatte · 26/04/2021 01:51

I haven't heard of it and assumed it was pronounced a-MAN-deen until I got halfway through the thread. It reminds me of medication too!

Ellmau · 26/04/2021 08:17

Very pretty, but there WILL be pronunciation issues.

IbrahimaRedTwo · 26/04/2021 08:21

I wouldn't call a child after a garnish or dessert, to be honest.

VenusClapTrap · 26/04/2021 09:50

I think it’s beautiful.

Lindy2 · 26/04/2021 10:02

I've not heard of it before. I was going to reply that it sounds more like the name of a cake and lo and behold - it appears it is actually also the name of a cake!

That cake looks very nice. I must try and find one. Grin

KirstenBlest · 26/04/2021 10:22

It's French for almond

swimlittlefishy · 26/04/2021 10:24

@KirstenBlest

It's French for almond
No it isn't. Almond is amande. Amandine is a dish garnished with almonds and it's also a type of dessert.
KirstenBlest · 26/04/2021 10:26

It is in my dictionary.

swimlittlefishy · 26/04/2021 10:31

Then you need a better dictionary.

Blondiney · 26/04/2021 10:34

It's beautiful. Almond croissants are also beautiful and I'm suddenly craving one!

Violetlavenders · 26/04/2021 10:40

It’s not the same. In French it’s Aa mon deen not Ah.

I pronounce Aa and Ah exactly the same. And I speak French.
