What does this name make people think of, is it a controversial choice? I it is pronounced ah-mon-deen.

If its pronounced Ah - Mon- Deen,

Why spell it

Ah-Man Deen

Amondine would make more sense

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 25/04/2021 16:35

It’s a dessert isn’t it?!

But like naming a kid Tiramisu, Limoncello or Brûlée.

No one will pronounce it like you want it pronounced if this child is to live outside of the European continent.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 25/04/2021 16:37

That’s the one AccidentallyOnPurpose

thebestnamehere · 25/04/2021 16:38

How about Amadine? No N?

Bellyups · 25/04/2021 16:39

Makes me think of a medicine for some reason

19thNamechange · 25/04/2021 16:45

Sorry but it reminds me of some tablets I was given for an ear infection, so it wouldn't be a name I would choose.

Amondine would make more sense

Because it's french
WowIlikereallyhateyou · 25/04/2021 16:46

I like it.

Happycat1212 · 25/04/2021 16:49

Glad it's not just me who thought it was a medicine when scrolling down active . Until I saw it was in baby names

lightofthetrees · 25/04/2021 16:52

Not for me

TatianaBis · 25/04/2021 17:00

It’s pronounced Aamandine not Ahmandine.

For ah you need Armandine.

onitsukaPhilosykos77 · 25/04/2021 17:34

Thanks very much for the opinions/ thoughts they are much appreciated.

Controversy wise I thought maybe trout Amandine would come to mind or Amantadine.

I was optimistic that an English or American accent would still pronounce more like like 'a-muhn-deen'... but it sounds like that might not be so.

@TatianaBis

It’s pronounced Aamandine not Ahmandine.

For ah you need Armandine.

What if the OP is Scottish, Irish, American, Russian, Filipino, West Indian, West Country or indeed from anywhere that has a rotic accent?

Arrrrrrrrrrrmandine isn’t remotely the same name, is it?

weebarra · 25/04/2021 18:26

It's lovely. I'm Scottish and I'd pronounce it Ah- mon-dine.

Aspiringmatriarch · 25/04/2021 18:36

I really like it.

whatausername · 25/04/2021 18:47

I'm sure plenty of people could imitate the French pronunciation but they won't (because it would sound odd and pretentious). She'd end up a-man-dine or a-man-deen, as in 'a man'. Much less pretty.

goldielockdown2 · 25/04/2021 18:55

Beautiful to the British ear but quite common yet old fashioned in France (just to let you know)

Mydarlingmyhamburger · 25/04/2021 19:08

Makes me think of prescription drugs, like benedine

Amandine and Armandine are French names so its French pronunciation at issue. (I say names, Amandine is technically a chocolate).

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2021 19:45

Nice in a French speaking country

I think it might lose its grace here somewhat

user1471457757 · 25/04/2021 19:49

I have an Amandine. Some people find it difficult to pronounce but we've had lots of compliments on it too.

PolarnOPirate · 25/04/2021 20:04

Makes me think of almonds. Very pretty sounding though, I love it!

ChelseaCat · 25/04/2021 20:06

@Alfxn

To be honest when I saw the thread title on Active Topics I thought it was a typo for Amantadine, which is a painkilling drug, but probably not many people will make that connection!!
I did exactly the same Thing!!
thiswaythat · 25/04/2021 20:10

Hate it. Purely because I was stalked by one years ago. Ooh sends shivers down my spine. But that's my own issue I know this.

Purely subjectively I think it's nice if you are in a francophone country, if not it's a bit awkward pronunciation wise

partyatthepalace · 25/04/2021 20:20

I think it sounds better in French than English, unless you live someone fairly international I think it will get pronounced like Amanda with an ine rather than an a on the end, which is a bit crap.
