Some older names I don't think will be returning:

Ethel
Enid
Sheila
Carol

Archibald
Gary
Brian
Reginald

Any to add?

@Aragog there's a singer called Mabel so I'd not be surprised to see it in years to come

Mabel is already back in a big way @MamaLion1319

I'm assuming it's a top 100 name now? If not it will be by the time the 2019 official stats released?

ZappBrannigan · 28/07/2020 20:50

I always remember my ex MiL pulling a face when I told her the name of my sister as "no one would have been called that in my day (1940s/50s), as it was an old lady name then".
It was a biblical name, like Sarah/Hannah/Rachel which were v.popular in the 80s and 90s, my sister was one of 10 girls in her year with the same name.
I'd have much preferred something like that to the godawful 70s name I got. I use a derivative of it.

I see a lot of kids in my job and I've met a few named Archie / Reg / Stanley / Mabel / Sylvia. Yet to meet a little Barbara though!

Miriel · 28/07/2020 21:02

When I was younger the idea of anyone naming a baby Enid, Ethel or Elsie would have been absolutely ridiculous, so I'm reluctant to rule anything out, but if I had to guess:

Dorcas
Bertha
Bessie
Beulah
Nellie
Irma
Maureen
Eunice

Egbert
Hubert
Horace
Herbert
Humphrey
Melvin
Vernon
Lester

MamaLion1319 Mabel is very popular amongst my children’s peers, they are 11 and 8. I’ve come across 2 or 3 younger ones too. It’s already gone bsck

PlantPotting · 28/07/2020 21:15

Re previous poster... Darryl is on the list if our next is a boy!

I don't think Karen is way out. I know a few with this name as first or middle name, all under 5.

Petunia, Amos, Marjorie, Jim, Colin, Mary are the top "on the way out" ones I can think of.

ZaZathecat · 28/07/2020 21:26

They will ALL come back eventually. When I was a child it would have been unthinkable to name a child with an OAP name like Ivy, Daisy, Fred, Archie etc. but look at their popularity now.

Miriel · 28/07/2020 21:53

Some names really haven't come back, but they're things like Leofric, Warin, Theodred, Tacey, Livilda or Amalaswintha.

Karen, Kylie, Sharon and Tracey will be back!

OhTheRoses · 28/07/2020 21:59

Darryl was a girl in Mallory Towers I seem to recall.

Yesterdayforgotten · 28/07/2020 22:07

Somebody said Raymond but I know of afew Raymond's/Rays in America and some young. I wouldn't put it in the same category as your Malcolm's and Kevin's etc.

bridgetreilly · 28/07/2020 22:11

It was Darrell in Malory Towers, not Darryl. But still.

MamaLion1319 · 28/07/2020 22:27

@Miriel
My sons middle name is Lester after my grandfather, also has Hedley after his grandfather. I'm sure the registrar was surprised

Krazynights34 · 28/07/2020 22:59

Some of these names are lovely and should Coe back!
Maud, Edna, Lavinia...
But as many have said- they’ll be back when the tide turns!

SengaStrawberry · 28/07/2020 23:03

I actually really like Raymond.

germainegrainne · 28/07/2020 23:07

I love Sheila Confused
In the event of an accident I would totally use it!!

Kevin, Darren, Karen, Tracey...

ButterflyRuns · 28/07/2020 23:08

Gertrude and probably safe to say Karen now...

MinnieMousse · 28/07/2020 23:17

I think all those Enid Blyton-esque 50s names - Deborah, Susan, Pamela etc will have a comeback as soon as the current generation of them have died. Some of them are really pretty names, they just are associated with people of a certain age at the moment. I'm not sure some of them will make the cut - Brenda, Colin, Nigel - but you never know.

I think Fanny and Dick are probably gone for good.

OhTheRoses · 28/07/2020 23:20

Fanny is used in France.

SirVixofVixHall · 29/07/2020 20:11

I know a little Humphrey. I also like Raymond. I think there is a journalist whose sons are Leonard and Raymond ?

alltoomuchrightnow · 29/07/2020 22:02
