Some older names I don't think will be returning:

Ethel
Enid
Sheila
Carol

Archibald
Gary
Brian
Reginald

Any to add?

Both my sons' names have been mentioned, and whilst they are not particularly fashionable at present I have met plenty of others. I would say they are both timeless names that have waxed and waned in popularity but, like quite a lot of the names on here, never actually gone away.

MikeUniformMike · 27/07/2020 18:13

Maria is more popular than you think.I can think of a few.

MikeUniformMike · 27/07/2020 18:14

Dolly can be short for Dorothy, and that will make a comeback.

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 27/07/2020 18:42

Myra. I do not know a single Myra. I have never heard anybody under the age of 70 who mentions 'Myra'.
I think we all know why.

Thisismytimetoshine · 27/07/2020 18:43

if a name has been around for a few hundred years or is biblical classical greek etc it will return these names never die away but they do go in circles, most Tudor Elizabethean names are still in use if the oldest example is 1960's-1990's it may not

right now John Ian and Andrew, Mary Janet and Bridget are not that common for new babies but they will not cease to exist

@Onetraumaatatimeplease you're right! Just realised I've never heard of any other Myra's. It's quite a nice name.

Aragog · 27/07/2020 21:10

I've jaunt been looking through the names of our new reception intake, plus the names of lour current reception and year 1s.

Amongst them we have:
Paul
Roy
Michael
Enid
Mabel
Etc

We've also had a number of children names Archie and Reggie in recent years - no doubt some of those have full names in their birth certificate.

Aragog · 27/07/2020 21:11

I also taught a Kevin not too long ago, though it wasn't his real name. He'd come from Korea and he and his brothers used 'English' names Kevin, Stephen and one other of this style.

Karenovirus · 27/07/2020 21:19

Myra. I do not know a single Myra. I have never heard anybody under the age of 70 who mentions 'Myra'. I think we all know why.
I know a Myra. She’s mid 70s, she is very “jolly hockey sticks”. She hates her name, but was an adult when the negative connotations evolved and didn’t want to change it.
emilybrontescorsett · 27/07/2020 22:18

I know a Myra she’s in her 50s. Plenty of people use Variants of Fred and people have used Peter and Ian.

Danniiaddy · 27/07/2020 22:46

Donald & Boris!

YoyoRiot · 27/07/2020 22:50

Colin
Kevin
Karen
Sharon
Tracey
Keith
Brian
Trevor
Brenda

TheAdhesiveDuckDeficiency · 28/07/2020 03:04

I know two baby Keiths!

I think most names will make a comeback at some stage. Eventually they won’t be associated with middle aged people any more by the people having babies and they will be chosen.

Carouselfish · 28/07/2020 03:16

I know children under 5 called
Douglas
Percy
Richard
Claire

And some more from pp I can't remember.

I agree with Fanny and Barry.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 28/07/2020 17:06
