Some older names I don't think will be returning:

Ethel
Enid
Sheila
Carol

Archibald
Gary
Brian
Reginald

Any to add?

Names seem to go in roughly 100 year(ish) cycles. Lots of the names listed here are 1940s-1950s names and are sure to come around again, when kids whose great-grandparents had those names are having babies themselves.

@Sixtyfourzoolane

I’ll be surprised if Karen ever makes a come back after turning into a meme ....
I was thinking the same though not so bad here as in America. It's so unkind to people called, "Karen".

Sharon and Tracy won't return. Likewise Joanna though Joanna will continue I think.

I saw 'Brian' on the opening post and that's quite nice.

onedaysoonish · 26/07/2020 23:54

Ethel, Mildred, Maud, Enid I think will come back.

Karen not so sure! Same for Doreen.

jessstan2 · 26/07/2020 23:55

I meant, "Likewise Joanne thought Joanna will continue I think".

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 26/07/2020 23:57

Seraphina - "I love/hate these threads because I can always play "MyName bingo".

Me too. Oddly, it hasn't come up yet, but DH's name has been mentioned several times. Mine's unusual, his is definitely old-fashioned was old-fashioned when he was born

Babamamananarama · 26/07/2020 23:58

Hayley and Dean feel fairly improbable,

But then again I know a 6 yr old Alan and a Terence so you never should rule them out.

My mum was called, 'Amy' and hated it. When I had my baby (a boy), loads of people called their daughters 'Amy', it made a real comeback and my mum felt quite fashionable for once.

'Kelly' will not return, nor 'Keely' or 'Kaitlin' in various spellings.

YourWinter · 27/07/2020 00:01

Just think how many under-7s now are called Wilfred, Stanley, Percy, Albert, Edith, Elsie, all names popular in the first 20 years of the last century. I'm sure there will be babies with names like Peter, Derek, Nigel, Janet, Susan, Helen, after the middle of this century.

Agree with you about Hayley and Dean, likewise Wayne, Shane and Damon.

Alan and Terence are quite nice, fairly classic names so I think they return.

We don't hear of many boys called Gregory nowadays and I like that, 'Greg'.

@FedUpAtHomeTroels

I disagree with all of them. Chances are your Great granchildren will have many of those names in school with them. When I was having kids, in 80's and 90's I'd have written names like many of the names used today as never going to be used again.
I'd even go so far as to say grandchildren in many cases.

There is no way I (or any of my friends) would have called our children George, Harry, Ellen, Camilla, Grace, Edward, Edmund, Nora, Lily, Grayson, (All in the top 100)

Strangely, some of the boys names have already gone out of fashion and come back again.

Others were fine then and still are now.

Names as much as or even more than other things go round in circles. I like modern names but I do find it odd (until I get used to it) when babies are called names that my mum would have found old fashioned.

YourWinter · 27/07/2020 00:03

I know a few dogs with names like Dave and Brian. The dog thing will have to pass before parents choose those names for babies again.

RubyViolet · 27/07/2020 00:07

Names l thought l would never hear that have made a comeback... Betsy, Maud, Helena.
I think all names come back.

Isis

I knew someone who named their baby Isis in 2002, I lost touch, but often think how it must have affected her daughter in more recent times.

I think Isis is beautiful, it’s such a shame that it’s got the connotations it has now.
Sportsnight · 27/07/2020 00:21

Dick and Fanny seem unlikely. Sorry to lower the tone, dd is reading a lot of Enid Blyton.

caringcarer · 27/07/2020 00:21

Names seem to get recycled by generations. Names my great grandparents had seem to be back in fashion now, Ivy and George.

StatisticalSense · 27/07/2020 00:27

I don't think there is any name, other than possibly Adolf that has no chance of ever coming back but there are certainly names that'll take longer than others from the same generation.
Karen will clearly be off limits for some time and it is likely that Keith (which has similar connotations to Karen, albeit for men, amongst much of the younger generations) won't be used much for the next 20-30 years. Of the names mentioned so far Scott has never really completely vanished (and won't do so for some time while Mr. Mills remains on R1), Timothy still lingers to some extent and many of the names considered elderly are beginning to come back.

Between my grandparents and parents, were the following names:
Grace
Elizabeth
Emily
William
George
Thomas
I remember as a child thinking these were such old fashioned names.
Any of them would stand the test of time now. I think most names will come back round again. Unless the trend for making names up takes over.
My name and my two siblings names are in this thread as ‘never again’ names. My children are already planning mine and my sisters names as MN for their children 🤣🤣🤣
