Some older names I don't think will be returning:

Ethel
Enid
Sheila
Carol

Archibald
Gary
Brian
Reginald

Any to add?

Belinda will make a comeback!!!!!!!

Giganticshark · 27/07/2020 01:03

@senga yes, you're right, isis absolutely is a beautiful name. Much nicer than the very similar Isla, I think.
Fkin ruined now though :(:(:(
There was a cafe named isis in Manchester, they had to change their name (to something even more ridiculous though haha 😂)

Well, that's a full house. My name and those of my sister and brother are here! My brother's name isn't one of the worst, but I'm not even surprised that the other two are here.

My dad chose our names for some reason. He chose names that were already out of fashion as he just thought most of the 'new fangled' names were ridiculous and would sound even more ridiculous when we were old. There are some lovely classic, timeless names he could have chosen .... but no. I remember him saying (picking out the names he hated most) 'Imagine an old lady called Jacqueline or Amanda - har, har, har...' Yes, but Dad, everyone will have grown up within the same generation and those names will BE the old lady names. Meanwhile we were saddled with crap names which will sound equally crap in old age. EVERYBODY had an auntie or granny with my name when I was a child. I think I'm scarred for lifeGrin

JustanotherTuesday · 27/07/2020 01:50

AhBalix I know that feeling. My DM picked a name of her generation and it is so hideously fogey, I have never met anyone under 70 called it.
My mum knows I hate it but insists it is lovely, my dad didn't like it either. I would rather have been called Sharon or Tracey Smile
I am surprised my name hasn't appeared here but then it was never popular in the first place.

talkingkrustydoll · 27/07/2020 06:52

I know a 20year old called isis it's such a lovely name but sadly she now hates it because she gets teased constantly.

MikeUniformMike · 27/07/2020 07:35

Not RTFT.

Ethel - I think this has made a slight comeback
Enid - This is a very old welsh name, pronounced Ennyd, and is pretty.
Sheila - This is pretty too
Carol - Nowt wrong with it, although I don't 'get' Carole.

Archibald - Er, nobody has recently called their child Archie?
Gary - It's fine
Brian - It's fine
Reginald - I know a little Reggie.

Franticbutterfly · 27/07/2020 09:54

My name is on this list loads of times 😩, I wish I could change it, it's a crap name and I've always known that.

9 years ago I wanted to call DD Isis. Fortunately for her DH is a bit more in tune with current affairs.
Grufallosfriends · 27/07/2020 10:55

Loads of little Archibald's around here!

Ps I don't like it at all.

Grufallosfriends · 27/07/2020 10:55

Sorry Archibalds

JanewaysBun · 27/07/2020 11:17

I'm shocked at some of these suggestions! As far as I was aware, Enid and Ethel had already "come back" and if I didn't know of cats with those names they would be on my girl shortlist!

Tlollj · 27/07/2020 11:54

It’ll never cease to amaze me what some people choose to call their children. I wouldn’t be surprised if all these names make a comeback. It’s only fashion after all.

zigaziga · 27/07/2020 11:56

How many of the Archies and Reggies about now are actually Archibald and Reginald? I imagine hardly any.

I’ve been surprised by some of the new/old names I’ve heard.. Rita for instance. I find Rita pretty ugly.

Gary
Kevin
Keith
are hideous and I think may not come back.

And agree with PP on some of the -ine names for women - Pauline, Maureen etc.

Moonflower12 · 27/07/2020 12:01

I taught a little Kevin last year. He is 5.

Greentea93 · 27/07/2020 12:02

Deborah

Toohotandsticky · 27/07/2020 12:04

There is an Adolf in my DH's family. Not a baby, I hasten to add, an older man. He's not British but has lived in the UK for over 50 years. I've been part of this family for over 20 years and I still cringe when his name is mentioned and can't quite bring myself to use it out loud. He and the rest of the family seem quite bemused by others' reactions - it's just a name, nothing to do with that other Adolf - and I do understand that it's not his fault that he was given this name but I do find it slightly odd that he's never shortened it or used a nickname like the Adi mentioned upthread. I do recall once DH and I were in a supermarket and DH was speaking quite loudly on the phone about family matters. We were given a wide bearth by other shoppers as he very unselfconciously spoke about Adolf in glowing terms. I wanted the floor to swallow me up.

Back to the point of the thread though - I agree that very few names will never make a comeback. Keith, I think will always retain some degree of popularity in Scotland at least, as will Douglas (personally, I love Douglas!). My 9 year old nephew thinks Brian is a phenomenally coll name and I have to admit that if I try to lose the image in my head of a balding accountant, it does have have a nice sound to it.

Personally I think that names like Patricia, Linda, Sandra, Derek, Colin etc will start to gain traction as middle-names first as parents seek to honour their own parents and grandparents and once they are out in the public domain that way, they will slowly start to come to life again as first names.

Goyle · 27/07/2020 12:10

You have all listed members of my family Grin.

I read somewhere that Garys are an endangered species.

jessstan2 · 27/07/2020 12:11

I don't like Rita. I only ever knew two Ritas when I was at school, the name conjours up blowsy barmaid.

I agree about Gary and Kevin, silly names though there are a lot of Kevins in Ireland named after the saint:
Kevin (/ˈkɛvɪn/) is the anglicized form of the Irish masculine given name Caoimhín ([kiːvʲiːnʲ], Middle Irish: Caoimhghín [kəiṽʲʝiːnʲ], Old Irish: Cóemgein [koiṽʲɣʲinʲ], Latinized Coemgenus), composed of Irish caomh (Old Irish cóem) "dear; noble" and -gin (Old Irish gein) "birth".

Keith isn't bad. Meaning:
"wood, forest", "from the battleground" Keith is a masculine given name. It comes from a Scottish surname, adopted as a given name in the 19th century.

Regarding Reggie and Archie: I hate the practice of giving diminutives as names rather than full names, eg Katie, Alex, etc. I think the full name should be given and the child called by a diminutive.

Somethingvague · 27/07/2020 12:11

Tracy
Karen
Kerry
Sharon
Nigel
Gordon
Trevor

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 27/07/2020 12:13

I really like the name Tracey. It sounds elegant to me and undeserving of the 'Essex girl' association. I also know a 12 year old Elliott and have a DD (also 12) whose name is Clair.
I think the only totally off limits, never to make a comeback names are those linked to notorious murderers or victims.
