I'm pretty sure you could pick literally ANY name you've ever even thought of, and feel confident not every boy at school will have it.

Justmuddlingalong · 05/03/2020 18:25

I'm pretty sure whichever name you choose, not every boy at school will have it.

Alan - when was the last time you met a child called Alan?

HettyStThomas · 05/03/2020 18:27

I gave DS1 a top 10 name. He's the only one in his junior school with it.
DS2 has a very unusual name, and there is another one in his class. You can never predict how things will turn out.

DD is in the top 30
DS1 not in top 100
DS2 is in the top 10

All 3 are the only one of their name in their primary school (approx 250 kids)

If I was to choose a boys name now I'd go for something fairly classic like:

David
Martin
Ross
Nathan
Michael
Daniel
Mark
Richard
Antony
Simon

DS1 was one of 4 in reception class of 90.
We moved abroad, came back to the same house, got given a different (but still walking distance) primary, and he is the only one in the year. You cant predict it.
DS2 has been the only one in every school - but there are 2 dogs at the school gates with his name!!!

What's with the goady comments? You know what the OP meant.

willowmelangell · 05/03/2020 18:51

@HerRoyalCarbyLess haha I saw what you did there...
I haven't met a Robert since I left school.
I work with a Julian, first one I've met since primary school.
Never met an Edward.
I seem to trip over Mark's every time I turn a corner!
It is good to really think about a name. The first thing you do is give them life, and the second thing you do is give them a name.

JustOneSquareofDarkChocolate · 05/03/2020 18:57

Both my sons are at a large school and they are the only ones with their names. English names, more likely that the school dads have them and many times people confuse my DH's name with my DSs name (as in it would be more likely to have a child with DH' name and I have given the children names more likely to be found on a 40 yr old.

I'm not going to name their names as the combo would be too outing Grin but it is brilliant as whenever I go to school, label their things etc etc everyone knows exactly who they are and I don't have to go through the (eg) "Thomas? Do you mean Thomas P, Thomas W or Thomas A? malarky.

Mumthedogsbeensick · 05/03/2020 19:05

I've got a Ross and he was the only one at primary school and is the only one at secondary too!

Awww - most adult Alan’s I’ve met have been lovely!

IKEA888 · 05/03/2020 19:10

depends where you live as well.
Ewan is v popular here and there would be more than 1 in school.

Look at the other way - just avoid the ones where there will be 2+ the same: Oliver, Henry, Noah, Oscar, Jack, Harry, Daniel, Matthew, Charlie, William, Tom all spring to mind easily.
Whatever you choose there is a chance of at least one (except for little Merlin, who was in my son's class!)
