Corona. Or with a K for a whimsical spelling.

But seriously OP, think about the generation of names we think as Dad names: Clive, Simon, Richard, Neil. When that generation dies it will free up those names, but they won't be popular soon! (Unlike the names of the recently deceased generation : Wilfrid, Alfie etc)

Lachlan
Bobby
Ernie
Cody
....
It’s hard for us to say! Some names mentioned on Mumsnet that come up such as Teddy, Arlo, Albie and Reuben people on here say they literally know loads! In my area I know of a 7 year old called Reuben and that’s it! It’s definitely Geographical!
So many George’s, Oliver’s and Benjamin’s where I live!

I agree that you can't predict.

I have only taught 2 Euans in 30 years of teaching but they were both in the same class.

We currently have two boys with exactly the same name (first name and surname) but there are no other boys with that first name in the school of over 500 children.

There is a small number of names to avoid (Charlie, Harry, Oliver...) but there is no guarantee.

We know 2 little Alans.
One middle infant age and one reception age I think.
Both nice boys.

Have a think about names of your parents friends?

I always recommend Paul on these threads.

I had Perry on the list for my boy.
Lucien.
I love Asher now, but i think that will rise in popularity.

How about Barry?

My eldest son (13) is called Harry which was the number one name at the time and for quite a few years since so when I had another boy and then a girl, decided not to go with such popular names.
There wasn't a single other Harry at his primary school for 5 years but there's 2 other girls and another boy with the same name as younger son - I honestly wouldn't worry about it too much just go with what you like and remember that some names are unpopular for a bloody good reason.

You can never predict a names popularity.
A friend of mine had a ds and the day she registered his birth a baby in a soap opera was named the same name. It went from never hearing it to everywhere she couldn't have predicted that.
I have 3 dc 2 have names that consistently sit in top 10 however they both went through primary being the only one in school. Ds has a less common name and there were several of them in school. You just can't predict.
I'd chose a name you like first and foremost.

mamablondie2 · 02/06/2020 17:57

As a primary teacher I feel you are setting yourself up for disappointment if you name your child something purely because it’s not popular. I guarantee you’ll either end up finding another (probably in his class - Sod’s law) or you will mark him out just for the sake of it.

Also for what it’s worth I find that girls names are repeated far more and they tend to be in ‘batches’ of similar names (Evie, Ivy, Eva, Ava etc) boys names tend to be more singular. Harry and Jack are getting a bit bland but besides that nothing else really jumps out as being overdone IMO.

My children went to primary school with a year group of 20.
My dd had a top 30 name and was the only one called that in her school.
My ds has an unusual name and was the only one in the school with that name. However he had 2 boys in his class with the same name (out of top 400 at the time) and those parents were so shocked. (And there was only one Jack in the whole school despite that being the most popular name for years at that time). Dd had 3 girls in her class with the same name as each other - it was a top 50 name but only just.
There are some names which always seem popular - Tom, Alexander, Joseph - but others are less predictable.
They have several children called Gabriel, Felix, Oscar in their school now (secondary school) which were relatively rare back then. There are almost no Jacks or Olivers despite those being very popular at the time. The most popular girls' name in dd's year at school is Anna which was 39th the year they were all born. Dd's name was more popular yet she still hasn't been at school with another.
What I'm trying to say is that you really can't predict these things easily. Maybe go outside the top 10 but beyond that it's hard to know whether you will happen to be in a class with other parents with the same taste in names as you.

SallyWD · 03/06/2020 10:31

I was at school in the 80s and the popular names from then are not at all common now. Names like Paul, Stephen, Andrew Richard, Glen, David, Mark, Christopher.

Minai · 03/06/2020 19:31

There are so many more names used today than 50 years ago so even if you choose a top 10 name it’s not likely there will be loads in a class.

Ds1’s name was number 36 the year he was born and whenever it comes up on mumsnet there are always comments about how they know hundreds of them and how there are so many boys with this name but in 3 years of going to baby and toddler groups I have only come across 1 other child with that name.

SporadicNamechange · 03/06/2020 20:22

I’m pretty sure little Dick would be the only one in the school these days.

If you’re in England, something Gaelic that’s long and hard to pronounce (for English speakers) will probably serve your purposes. Something like Máelechlainn or Baothghalach might fit the bill.

Ferdinand

DanniArthur · 03/06/2020 20:25

You may be surprised. My DD's name is very popular according to mumsnet and yet I've still to meet another under the age of 40. I do agree with 80s names like Kevin, Jason etc being few and far between in nurseries and schools
