I think there must be massive regional differences as some of these names are popular here eg Theo and Robert (nickname Robbie)
Round here unusual would be
Gary, Kevin, Stuart, Lionel, Richard, Darren, Jason, Trevor

You need to say if you're in London or not OP. If in london stick to the top 20 and you're safe?

We knew two boys called Fox. You'd think you'd be safe with that one but not in London!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/03/2020 01:02

Craig
Paul
Richard
Lawrence
Philip
Carl
Francis
Brian (although I know a baby Brian)
Michael
Gerard
Conrad
Lee
Brodie
Lorenzo
Anthony
Kerin
Robert

(Yes they are the names of boys I was at school with, but they are unusual for babies whilst still being easy and established names)

Alan (I actually really like this)
Gareth

At my primary schools (I went to 5) the boys names which only came up once were:

Merlin
Kaylum
Shawn
Ian
Dominic
Hiyan
Mark
Nathan
Brendan
Terry

I can't imagine there's many babies out there called Ian, Terry or Merlin these days!

I’ve thought of a few various different ‘types’ of name that I’ve not heard for a baby in a while.

Nathan
Marcus
Dylan
Carl
Michael
Mark
David
Peter
Hugh
Caleb
Nicholas
Keir
Blake
Calvin
Adam
Bradley
Reggie

Isn’t this all a bit pointless asking people what names they haven’t heard in a while???

Why not just look at the top 1000 lists of names and avoid the top 250. You can also break the names down by region on the ONS website to make sure you’re avoiding all top 100 names in your area. Easy.

Isthistrueor · 06/03/2020 12:42

Names that have died out in recent years such as Keith, Alan, Barry, Bernard, Trevor, Stephen, David, Gregory, Phillip, Paul, Gary, Dale, Darren etc.

You will still be surprised though, there’s a Travis in my DD’s class.

Brian, a good strong name for a baby!

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 07/03/2020 10:46

I know an infant age alan and a baby alan
I would go with something classic/ bible based.
Simon
Matthew
David
Michael
Andrew
Johnathan
Nathan
Joshua
Steven
Anthony
Peter
All lovely names but a bit "out of fashion" as we grew up with these as our classmates.
But all solid, timeless names.

Twisique · 07/03/2020 10:49

Keir
Lloyd
Bevan

EugenesAxe · 07/03/2020 10:56

Aubrey
Wilfred/ Wilf

I agree with Jonathan, and love it when you find out someone is Jon not John. That was before Jon Snow, in case anyone assumes. It’s like when you find out Ed is short for Edmund, which is another name I love.

Grasspigeons · 07/03/2020 11:09

Just remember if you go to a school with a lot of nationals from other countries you might find there are names that arent as popular here but are there - so we have more than one David and Philip for instance.
I havent mean a young Simon or Jonathan yet though. (Work in a school so about a 4 year lag on name trends)

5LeafClover · 07/03/2020 11:23

Davy (birth certificate David)

Lavenderblues · 07/03/2020 13:28

Why not just look at the top 1000 lists of names and avoid the top 250.

This.

There's thousands of lovely normal names used only about 20-30 times per year.

QueenofmyPrinces · 07/03/2020 19:37

I’ve got an Arron and I’ve never come across another one at his school.

jfoyo26 · 08/03/2020 13:04

I really like Nicholas!
Michael, David and Stephen are pretty classic and timeless imo but you really hear kids with these names now

jfoyo26 · 08/03/2020 13:04

*rarely

wellyjin · 26/03/2020 15:52

What about combining a couple of classic names into something fresh?

Say Connor and David could become Covid for instance.

PlantPotting · 26/03/2020 16:12

Did you decide @Tifsy
