LUCY!?

I rarely hear this name which surprises me because it's such a clean, beautiful and utterly timeless girls name!! Why don't more people use it?

We want a really pretty but classic name and Lucy/Lucie is at the top of my list (Annabelle, Elena and Anna close runners up)

What do you think of Lucy?

@Brassica

I think we should have the french system of a list of approved spellings.

Tiredmum100 · 04/03/2020 20:10

I'm a 80s Lucy. There were 3 in my class in school. Haven't come across another one as an adult though. My nan was also Lucy. I really like my name. FWIW I consider myself to be pretty amazing 😉 go for it OP!

TheGinSoakedBoy · 04/03/2020 20:16

99% sure that Lucie is the French spelling so it would pass the test @lovelyupnorth.

cptartapp · 04/03/2020 20:27

Rather wet IMO. Sorry.

oohnicevase · 04/03/2020 20:54

I had a beautiful Siamese cat called Lucy when I was a child . She was so lovely and I have always had a soft spot for the name . 😍😍

ProfMcGonigle · 04/03/2020 21:00

I love it! I have a Lucy

chipsandgin · 04/03/2020 21:02

Lovely (as long as you stop shouting it!).

Ilovewillow · 04/03/2020 21:04

I really like Lucy but it did make me laugh with so many saying it's quite rare now when my daughter started school 6 yrs ago there were 8 in her yr. it's a lovely name though!

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 04/03/2020 21:37

Gorgeous name and suits a little girl and when she grows up and becomes a heart/brain surgeon it will suit her equally as well.

Beautyoftheirdreams · 04/03/2020 21:41

Lucy was the name we picked out if DS had been a girl. Really love it and sad we won't get to use it

Beautiful3 · 04/03/2020 21:44

I went to school with a few Lucy's in the 80s,
they were all rough but one . I know of a baby Lucy, who is cute. To me It's okay.

whiskeysourpuss · 04/03/2020 21:56

I have a Lucy - I chose her name (& DD1's) for the reasons you give OP.

Classic names that won't date & will be appropriate at all stages of their lives.

Betacarotene · 04/03/2020 21:56

I was a Lucy until my teens, when I phased in my middle name. To me it felt unbearably twee, dull, and childish. There were also 7 of us in the year. I am a teacher now and there are currently 14 across the two year groups I teach.

I hated every diminutive: Loose, like fucking elastic, Loo, like a bloody toilet, LuLu, like an old scottish singer.

RuffleCrow · 04/03/2020 21:57

It's a great name

Just posting this if you’re interested in hearing the statistics on Lucy (I’m a name geek btw 🙈)
Over the past 20 years the name Lucy has declined numbers wise consistently every year year-on-year

(According to the official ONS data), In the year 2000, there was over 4,257 baby girls names Lucy. The name was number 15 in the charts.

Fast forward to 2018 (the most recent year we have stats for) and there are only 910 baby girls named Lucy and the name is ranked number 61 in the charts.

Given the downward trajectory for the past 20 years, the name is very likely to leave the top 100 soon! It’s definitely an underused classic. I just love it ❤️

I only know 2 adults called Lucy and no babies. Both adults just go by full name “Lucy” and always did at school too (I was in same year)

Milkwith1sugar44 · 05/03/2020 11:03

Love it! The name of my angel baby so very close to my heart.
It's not over common at the moment, but also it's a name that never goes out of favour.
It's one of the few names that I had in my school year and also that my daughter has in her year now.

Bingeslayer · 05/03/2020 11:04

Love it

Bingeslayer · 05/03/2020 11:13

@Calamito June I have a HannahSmile

Milkwith1sugar44 · 05/03/2020 11:26

I have a Hannah too. I think the two names tend to go together.

Thisismytimetoshine · 05/03/2020 13:47

Hannah is lovely.

PointlessAddict · 05/03/2020 20:51

I love it. Couldn’t use it as in the wider family now and also I only have boys but it’s always been my favourite girl’s name, since I was a little girl and my dolls were always called Lucy

momtoboys · 05/03/2020 21:01

Love, love, love Lucy! I have a dear friend who has a Lucy and a Jane.

Whatsyourflava · 05/03/2020 21:11

@Ilovewillow you’re taking about your daughter who started school 6 years ago so presumably she’s about 11 now. The statistics for the name have dramatically changed in the past 11 years. It’s going to fall out of the top 100 very soon on current trajectory. I’ve written out the specific statistics up thread if you’re interested (probably not! But just Incase)

mytypeonpaper · 05/03/2020 21:26

2 of my friends have recently had Lucy's. I love it it's a beautiful name!

123Dancewithme · 05/03/2020 23:17

Agree with a pp that it’s a bit wet.
