I think it is the type of nickname people get that is unrelated to their name. Like Sonny. Buddy Holly’s real name was Charles, I think.

My mate had a pug called Buddy.

It was a good name. For a dog.

Where I live in north east England it's just another way of saying mate or pal "you alright bud? Alright buddy?"

Would be weird to hear everyone talking to you if you were named Buddy here

Felix (definitely a no go from DH sadly) as is my other fave
