I am pg, not due for what feels like a million years (next Aprilish), but I really would like some thoughts on girls names - just to pass the time as I throw up for the second time today really. Boys names I have down, but I haven't found something I love for a girl yet.
My current list:
Lilias (Scottish form of Lilian)
Hebe
Clover (vetoed by dp, but I could work on him...)
Tess
Iris
Laurel

I do love a plant/nature name

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
CassandrasCastle · 13/09/2019 22:33

Ohh no - lovely as Lilia is, it has to be Lilias...that is the Scottish name, and I love it. Hebe getting more love though...hmm

LILIAS is lovely.

What about Amaryllis?

AudacityOfHope · 14/09/2019 09:50

I'm a 47 year old Scottish woman and I've never ever met or heard of a person called Lilias, so I wouldn't get overly concerned about that if I were you.

CassandrasCastle · 14/09/2019 11:35

Get overly concerned about what?
I remember reading an old children's book set in Scotland with a character called Lilias, and have loved it since then - which is quite a long time. I also vaguely knew a distant elderly family friend with the name
Dp has just said that Hebe is a nice name for a plant, but he cannot call his child this Wine

As I said, Lilia is lovely, but it's not for me

Some of these names seem quite masculine to me. Lilias reminds me of Elias. Also makes me think Lily-ass, which isn't too pleasant.

Hebe also seems boyish, but it's alright. Iris I like a lot but I think it's a lot more popular than the others on your list.

Laurel is probably the best one. No one will remember the yanny meme! I also like Lauren even though it's unfashionable at the moment.

DarlingNikita · 14/09/2019 17:43

God, I only brought up the heebie jeebie thing as a light comment; it really wasn’t a problem for my friends. I can’t bleiv it’s caused so much angst!

FWIW I had no idea it was a plant until after my friends had their Hebe, so for me it’s a person’s name first and foremost.

DarlingNikita · 14/09/2019 17:43

believe

CatteStreet · 14/09/2019 21:50

Lilias and Iris are my favourites. (And presumably Lilias has an unvoiced 's' at the end, so you're not going to get people thinking it's a possessive as a PP suggested). I quite like Laurel too. I don't dislike Hebe, but not hugely keen.

nonmerci · 15/09/2019 13:11

Iris is nice.

Hebe just makes me think of ‘giving me the heebies’, I’m not keen.

nonmerci · 15/09/2019 13:12

I think people would mistake Lilias for Lilian a lot, that would get annoying.

AudacityOfHope · 15/09/2019 17:08

No, I just meant if you wanted Lilias because of a Scottish connection, then there isn't really a contemporary one.

Divgirl2 · 15/09/2019 17:54

You can't call a baby Hebe if you live in or will regularly visit Scotland.
Even the thought gives me the hebe jeebies.

HoratioNightboy · 15/09/2019 20:57

if you wanted Lilias because of a Scottish connection, then there isn't really a contemporary one.

That doesn't mean it's not a Scottish name. Confused

OP, old though the name is, it is making a very slight comeback, although nowhere close to being popular. I love and think you should go for it - it's a very pretty name.

Originally pronounced LEE-liss, it now seems to have settled into Lily-iss in modern usage, but either way I think it's lovely.

AudacityOfHope · 15/09/2019 22:23

I didn't say that's what it meant. Confused

What I mean is, I doubt anyone will hear it and say 'ah, that's a lovey Scottish name' because it kind of isn't, in the 21st century.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 15/09/2019 23:07

I love flower names my faves are

Dahlia
Artemisia
Azalea
Zinnia

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 16/09/2019 17:45

Oh god no, not Hebe... the heebie-jeebies!

Not Laurel (people may think she’s called Yanni! 😂)

I like Iris and Tess best from your list.

Redspider1 · 17/09/2019 20:32

Or Lily-ass Blush

VenusClapTrap · 19/09/2019 09:14

Hebe is a great name. I dislike Lilias; bit frilly for me.

Bloody love Clover.

Laurel is nice. Never heard of the Yanni thing.

How about Fleur or Marigold? I also had Nerine on my list, it’s a truly beautiful flower.

Pinkjellyfish · 21/09/2019 20:24

I posted a thread about Hebe once. It got mixed reviews! I still love it.
