Hebe...Lilias...Laurel. HELP

I am pg, not due for what feels like a million years (next Aprilish), but I really would like some thoughts on girls names - just to pass the time as I throw up for the second time today really. Boys names I have down, but I haven't found something I love for a girl yet.
My current list:
Lilias (Scottish form of Lilian)
Hebe
Clover (vetoed by dp, but I could work on him...)
Tess
Iris
Laurel

I do love a plant/nature name

It’s a lettuce isn’t it?

missmouse101 · 12/09/2019 21:23

Hebe and Sorrel are beautiful names (my guinea pigs' names, along with Teasel!) Also like Fern, Emerald, Bryony and Cassia.

go for Hebe you know you want to

Grin

Yeah, I guess Sorrel being a lettuce is slightly sad... I am most in love with Lilias and Hebe, but the thought of everyone pronouncing them wrongly and laughingat the heebie jeebie child... wah

@missmouse101 my DD Hebe would love to know which of the guineas is Hebe!!! She loves guinea pigs and is delighted you have one with her name!

UrsulaPandress · 13/09/2019 18:12

I know a Blossom .

CassandrasCastle · 13/09/2019 19:04

I'm not sure I can imagine shouting it across a supermarket or wherever though..Blossom I mean

Sorrel is a herb, not lettuce.
I think Tessa is nicer than Tess.
I really like Laurel.
All 3 of these names are really pretty and not too common.
The only Lilias I’ve known was in her 90’s so not at all common.

missmouse101 · 13/09/2019 19:07

@lumpy76 oh how adorable! Of course! Hebe is the long haired one! I have to brush and trim her and she's the one I named first as it's my favourite name. Grin She was about 4 months old in this photo. She adores her food and is so sweet. It's a fabulous name!

I know a Lilias. It is indeed an old Scottish name and is pronounced Lily-as

namechangedforthis1980 · 13/09/2019 19:27

I've seen Hebe suggested on MN a lot recently, always assumed it was a boys name!

mathanxiety · 13/09/2019 19:31

I live Lilias, Tess, and Laurel.

mathanxiety · 13/09/2019 19:34

Elfie is nice if short for Elfrieda. If your DH wants Elfie as a stand alone name, I would veto it.

It sounds like 'healthy' in some accents.

Also, a baby girl isn't an elf.

MrsBertBibby · 13/09/2019 19:34

That's a ridiculously cute piggy!

Blossom is a name for a cow or donkey.

Sorrel is indeed a horse colour.

The 'Row" of Rowen is pronounced like rowing a boat, not as in rowing/fighting.

Ineedaweeinpeace · 13/09/2019 19:49

I bloody love the name Hebe. Smile

lumpy76 · 13/09/2019 20:11

@missmouse101 thank you! She's a beautiful piggy!! Xx

CassandrasCastle · 13/09/2019 20:27

Hebe or Lilias, I suddenly feel like that's wlmy choice :o

I've loved Lilias for so long, but Hebe...ohhh. Iris is the one we agree most on of that makes sense, but there are so many of them...being called at in the park/Waitrose etc. 🤔

If you had to vote, Lilias or Hebe?

OP posts:
CassandrasCastle · 13/09/2019 20:29

And thanks for all the input by the way!

UrsulaPandress · 13/09/2019 20:32

Hebe. But it’s always been one of my favourites since a Mary Wesley novel. And also why I love Calypso.

missmouse101 · 13/09/2019 20:52

Hebe for sure!

BoomZahramay · 13/09/2019 22:18

Why not just Lilia? It's absolutely beautiful. I'm usually all for reflecting one's heritage, but I think it could be a PITA because the 's' makes it look like a plural or a possessive. 'I'm just goin to pick up Lilias.' 'Lilia's what?'

I've never heard of Hebe as a real name; only ever as Hebe-geebie, so I can't really warm to it.

Sorrel or Laurel are lovely, but I vote Lilia.
