Do the people writing ‘vee-ra’ mean that? They think it rhymes with ‘bee-ra’? Or do they mean ‘veer-ah’?
I’ve only ever heard it said ‘veer-ah’ incl. that character on coronation st.

HeronLanyon · 05/01/2020 10:53

Oh it is a bit more complex than I first thought. Even the ‘ear’ can produce eg veer- ah (as in to veer) or vee-er-ah (kind of three syllables) or vir-ah (as in revere - kind of softer/shorter veer-ah). I’m vir-ah although the word has lost all meaning as I’ve said it typing this !!

PlantPotting · 05/01/2020 11:59

Rhymes with Ear

Katfood · 05/01/2020 12:41

Vera is pronounced Ver-a like Ver-y or Ver-ity or Ver-onica.

There is no ea in Vera. It's simple Ver ah!

MikeUniformMike · 05/01/2020 13:47

Vee-ra

Lavenderblues · 05/01/2020 13:49

I've only ever heard it pronounced Ver-a

Often a nickname for Veronica. And that's pronounced Ver onica and not Veer onica Grin

HeronLanyon · 05/01/2020 13:50

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Vera as in verity katfood. Now trying a variety of accents where that might be right. Are you in Australia ? Think this is the closest I can get?

HeronLanyon · 05/01/2020 13:51

Wow! Nor have I ever known it to be anything other than a name in its own right - have never known it as short for Veronica. This is an eye opening thread !

Mamabear88 · 05/01/2020 13:52

Ear. Never heard the air pronunciation...

TSSDNCOP · 05/01/2020 13:52

Veer ah

Abracad · 05/01/2020 13:53

L-aur-a Fantacci pronounces it V-air-a

Pippilangstrumpfi · 05/01/2020 13:53

Vera is pronounced as it's written Ver-a.

Very, Verity, Veronica, Vera.

iklboo · 05/01/2020 13:54

Bit of a resurrection?

Pippilangstrumpfi · 05/01/2020 13:54

In which accent is Ver pronounced anything else than Ver/Vair?!

Drabarni · 05/01/2020 13:56

Like dear, it's vear.

Vera. Vaira is a bit up yourself and wrong.

Katfood · 05/01/2020 13:57

I'm in the UK and have only ever heard it pronounced as Ver-a. Never Veer-a Confused

Katfood · 05/01/2020 13:57

How does Ver become Veer?

SoupDragon · 05/01/2020 14:00

I'm in the UK and have only ever heard it pronounced as Ver-a. Never Veer-a

Equally, I'm in the U.K. and have only ever heard it pronounced Veer-a 😂

SoupDragon · 05/01/2020 14:02

Like dear, it's vear.

Yes, to rhyme with dear-a is the only way I've ever heard it pronounced. (Which is the same as veer-a in my accent)

SoupDragon · 05/01/2020 14:03

Good lord, this is from May and I've already commented back then!!

Poppydaisys · 05/01/2020 14:05

Those saying Vee ra, do you also pronounce Veronica and Verity as Vee ronica and Vee rity? And Very as Vee ry Grin

IvinghoeBeacon · 05/01/2020 14:06

“ How does Ver become Veer?”

How does the “Sar” part of “Sarah” come to rhyme with “air” and not “a” as in apple? Because English pronunciation is varied. Surely you must be used to that?

IvinghoeBeacon · 05/01/2020 14:07

No Poppydaisys, I’m sure people don’t. I’m sure you can manage all the variations in pronunciation of the combination of letters “ough” can’t you?

HeronLanyon · 05/01/2020 14:08

kat agree it’s odd particularly when it comes from root denoting ‘truth’. I’m in London and have never heard it said any way other than veer-ah. Other than I think Vera Chang? And aloe Vera (which as a Latin plant name kind of explains for me why it is a different pronunciation?). Not for a moment suggesting verh-a is somehow ‘wrong’(as if it could be) just thinking all vera’s from duckworth down (or up) and a few I’ve known have 99% only known veer-ah.
Beginning to like it more the more I think about it Grin

Wouldn’t your example also indicate that we should take from Katherine that Kate is kat? Grin

IndecentFeminist · 05/01/2020 14:08

Nearer Vera

Definitely a comeback, have met a few under the age of 2 recently. Not a fan I have to say
